Today in #notjustaliens: Dale Andersen! Dale is probably best known for his expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, but he has been involved with NASA’s Exobiology and Astrobiology programs since the mid-1980s, seeking to understand biology in extreme environments.

Text: Dr. Dale Andersen’s research interests are the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. He has been involved with NASA’s Exobiology and Astrobiology programs since the mid-1980s. Dale is interested in locating, characterizing, and understanding environments where physical and chemical conditions approach or exceed the tolerances for life. This includes biogeochemical processes occurring in polar lakes, oceans, and springs. Dale’s Arctic and Antarctic research expeditions have garnered international attention. #notjustaliens

The Planetary Society 🤝 SETI Institute

Did you know that the SETI Institute and The Planetary Society have more in common than just a passion for the search for extraterrestrial life? Carl Sagan, one of The Planetary Society’s founders, based the main character of his famous book Contact on the SETI Institute’s founder, Jill Tarter. And we both love the search for life beyond Earth!

#PPOD: Some of the incredible solar activity was captured last month by spacecraft near the Sun, including these plasma tornadoes. These walls of plasma are higher than the Earth is in diameter. And, of course, all this solar activity has provided us with stunning aurorae. With solar maximum approaching, chances are high that we'll see more incredible views like this one! Credit: NASA

https://www.livescience.com/space/astronomy/how-many-stars-in-the-milky-way-die-each-year

When you gaze up at the stars, you see the same constellations that the ancient Greeks, and even the early hunter-gatherers, did. But it's also a changing tapestry, as new stars are constantly being born, and others are dying. In fact, that will be the fate of our own sun in roughly 5 billion years. But how quickly does the night sky change, and in the Milky Way, how many stars die each year? According to James De Buizer at the SETI Institute, it's complicated.
