are you talking about when you fail to find a pattern and it's matching clauses you didn't intend? Since pattern matching goes top down, I usually go most specific to least specific like

def handle_case(%{multiplier: 5, type: :damage}), do: :5x_damage 
def handle_case(%{type: :damage}), do: :damage 
def handle_case(_didnt_match), do: :other
