Oh my god Zojja finally returning from the war huh... most bizarre decision in GW2 history for her to randomly disappear for almost a decade tbh...

sky,

@pixel I wanted to see her in the Kralkatorrik stuff, like, they even had Snaff himself show up but not his apprentice who was fucked up by losing him to Kralk's forces... There are so many writing decisions over all these years that I will just never understand lol

sky,

@pixel eh like I say, I think it was criminally stupid to leave her out of the one plot point that most involved her in vanilla. Like they lost that opportunity and it will never come again. They could've had her show up anytime in the last decade with just "hey look I'm recovered now" and I don't think it would have been weird, but making a special appearance to be like "sup Taimi I've been sick but this is personal to me so let me work with you, also we can commiserate about chronic illness"

sky, to random

I think not putting all one's fanwork eggs into one website basket is a good, smart thing to do, but also, I remember as I'm sure many of you do the days of "walked 15 miles uphill both ways in the rain looking for a fanfic & when you found one you didn't even enjoy it" lmao... It sucked. There's a reason people flocked to AO3 for fic instead of LJ, DW, Tumblr et al, you know? It didn't only happen because of trendiness or the rise of Big Social.

I wonder what a happy medium might look like.

sky,

@Rozzychan Not quite sure what you mean with "past tense"? I know AO3 was DDOSed yesterday but honestly I just woke up & haven't even checked it yet, was simply musing after seeing more toots of this nature on my timeline. With the AO3 scandals I've noticed a lot of talk about moving/diversifying from many quarters, not just in the past day. 1/2

sky,

@Rozzychan I think we already know a way to decentralize fanfic since that's the way fanfic used to work, but balancing the relative safety of decentralization with the ease-of-use of the digital library that is AO3 feels like a pretty tough problem. I certainly hope people with more knowledge than me are on the job because I personally have no ideas, lol. 2/2

sky,

@Rozzychan (also it feels so funny to write "the relative safety of decentralization" considering the reasons AO3 originally happened lol.)

Little reminder this morning that we really shouldn't rely on any ONE place to host

Bring back individual, ship and fandom archives 🫶

sky,

@gekidasa I agree with the importance of this in theory but god is it hard on those of us who like rarepairs in rare fandoms 😔

sky,

@shadyspotlight @gekidasa yeah that's another thing, I am often looking for fic where what I care about is the main character + general plot/theme/premise, whereas wider fandom tends to organize based on pairing and little else. AO3 is very good to us OTC types.

sky, to random

I always say the longer the longfic the better for my personal taste, but this apparently good fic I saw recced is almost a million words which might be pushing it even for me dffhhgdssd

One aspect of twitter which I am curious to see on Mastodon is the 'discourse account'.

I'm genuinely wondering how they'll play out here without the fandom discourse that is rife on twitter but seems relatively absent from the fediverse.

sky,

@bloodwrites I won't be surprised if some amount of it follows us here -- at one point there was an anti-focused instance, though it's shut down now -- but I think server mutes and defederation and the like will make it harder to escalate into stuff like bullying campaigns. One can hope anyway.

Is there a way that I can unsubscribe from posts yelling at Tumblr users for not reblogging? Because nothing will stop me from finding them phenomenally obnoxious.

I believe in the power of the reblog; I reblog so much stuff I'm sure my followers are sick of it. But I hate being yelled at or told that I'm "failing" artists/gifmakers/other creators if I don't.

(Also, they never mention fic writers, it's always visual artists and I'm more than a bit salty over that)

sky,

@enchantedsleeper lmao I don't post that much fanfic, but I have never had a single one reblogged

sky,

@enchantedsleeper I have personally never had a time on Tumblr where it didn't feel like yelling into a void. Honestly have no idea how anyone ever made connections on it in the first place lol, and I've been there since 2008. But my main fannish stuff was always RP and meta (not even meta so much as informal discussion really)

It was baffling to me when everybody in the popular fandoms moved to Twitter and somehow considered that even better

Chapters 13-15 of Unchained are now up on AO3! A visit to Kirkwall from the Herald of Andraste himself brings a little more fun, but a great deal more tension.

I was today years old when I found out human Glenn has a whole ass sprite sheet. like, not combat but about as many sprites as Schala has... All for like 2 seconds in one ending that you only get under very specific circumstances, I'm shook. I guess that was AAA quality for 1995 😂

p.s. he's....... very hot. Forget the anime cutscene version I want to see the original art for this long flowing hair ponytail guy

Edit: omfg, I checked, he has TWICE as many sprites as Schala!?

me abruptly realizing that DA4 has taken so long to come out, the computer i splurged on 2 years ago explicitly so i'd have good hardware to play DA4 on... is going to be obsolete for modern AAA games by the time DA4 is actually out

sky,

tl;dr for people who are interested but haven't heard about this previously: the owners of D&D (and parent company Hasbro) are trying to further monopolize the TTRPG space by outright lying about previous promises made to the fandom, attempting to retroactively disallow content they previously allowed 3rd party publishers to make under a special license, which I'm not sure is even legal in the US

sky, to random

Theoretically, and I even say this as a long time Masto regular, it's a great idea to meet folks on my fandom tags but I always feel like I'm mainly going to meet artists and "I love my Lavellan, wow how about that Trespasser" people instead of "so dark AU where previously shippy Hawke/Anders end up on opposite sides of the war after DA2 and bitterly command combat forces against each other and Anders isn't in DAI bc Tabris shows up to drag his old crush back to the Wardens" sort of people lol

This being blocked by google in thing is big. It doesn't matter WHERE you are in the world, but do you really want to have that kind of control over what you see?

Don't use google search. It's not hard to change, it's not like switching email providers or social media.

Just go into your browser settings and change your default search engine.

I use duckduckgo.com but there are others. I can attest that doesn't filter bubble, you'll have to check the others.

sky,

@bloodwrites honestly there is no good search engine anymore. I used more privacy friendly engines for years, went through a lot of them trying them out, and all of them sucked and I had to go crawling to Google lol. But even with Google it's a crapshoot whether I'll get what I actually need without adding site:reddit.com smh. The search engine well has just been so poisoned these days.

sky,

@bloodwrites I spent a long time trying to make DDG work, like years, and gave up genuinely because literally every search ended up being 2 searches after I couldn't find anything useful on like 3 pages of DDG and had to go to Google instead. I've also tried Qwant, Ecosia, Startpage, several SearX instances, and even Bing lol to equally abysmal results. 😩

sky,

@bloodwrites usually I'm looking for obscure stuff (sorry been trying to think of examples but having that problem of "put on the spot & suddenly all knowledge leaves my head" lol) or obscure stuff in Japanese, & DDG just doesn't seem to know much abt stuff I need. Doesn't feel like a filter bubble, so much as the spread of sites DDG's base result provider has crawled doesn't cover the spread I'm looking for. I've never found unexpected useful stuff on DDG, just irrelevant stuff.

sky, to random

I know I'm old because it's wild to me that some people seem actively angry and hostile to the idea of individual fans running community fan sites where people gather to hang out/post their fanworks, rather than posting them all on giant sites owned and operated by corporate entities who don't know you exist, where you can't talk to a single individual actual person about any problems you might be having

sky,

Actually you know what? It occurred to me this morning - people ALREADY widely do this in modern fandom. They just do it on Discord where if you're not invited by somebody who's already part of the ingroup you'll NEVER find it. Sometimes the privacy is on purpose, but sometimes it's just because Discord was never meant to be a widespread community space, so surely rarepair fans in the latter group would rather do fandom where like minded folks CAN find them?

sky,

@enchantedsleeper I feel like part of that is fans are no longer willing to assume good faith either, every mistake a mod might make like doing something subtly unwelcoming to fans of color or queer folks, is assumed to be deliberately malicious and that fan's "purity" is ruined forever with no willingness to believe they might try to correct their mistakes or bad behavior. Anti damage B&W thinking. No potential mod wants to be on the receiving end of that

sky,

@wembley just a general mood I seem to see in places where I poke my head in. I try not to personally involve myself in The Discourse outside expressing my opinion in my own space, getting into internet fights stresses me out.
