@joelanman Slack used to do this back in the day (don’t know if they still do or not?)

Just got an incredible idea to structure my project on a day to day basis, in a way that combines multiple disciplines without being overwhelming, and practical at the same time, and iterative

Each axis represents a domain or area of research or skills or theme & each coloured rectangle represents an intersection of the above.

Also each level of coloured rectangle represents one iteration of the intersection — the first visualisation/essay/ prototype of a 100 days of _____ type of project

Each axis represents a domain or area of research or skills or theme. And each coloured rectangle represents an intersection of the above but also, Each level of coloured rectangle one iteration of the intersection, an instantiation of application of it, a mini project or the first visualisation/essay/ prototype of a 100 days of project

I eschew simplistic dichotomies for the most part but there's one that I've noticed that feels universal across different cultures, settings, scenarios, industries, domains

Two types of disposition :

The Complaint Conformist vs the Rebellious Radical

The former being people who strive for excellence in recreating and maintaining what exists and the latter who are always seeking for creating original alternatives.

What practical skills would involve in this kind of niche design specialization for graphic, information and UI design?

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology micro-learning challenge for you: Transform what you’ve written here into a visual framework, like you’d share with others to frame this as a workshop activity. Think about your use of shape(s) to hold this information.

Visual collaboration, and by extension self-directed learning, is near and dear to my heart.

I just realised Bret Victor has always emphasized the importance of graphic design and information design as key for his concept of dynamic pictures and visual explanations. Its not ui, ixd or hci.

Its plain graphic design and information design but using it to make tacit information explicit.

I think his novelty lies with the way he selects a particular tacit activity and information.

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology one of Bret Victor’s earliest essays: https://worrydream.com/MagicInk/ (Very influential on my early thinking about graphic/information design)

Just a few years later, I joined a startup focused on crafted, highly visual/context attuned displays of search engine results.

These things shaped my thinking about highly visual/graphic displays that scale with dynamic data.

Almost two decades later, and I’m still looking for the tools that let anyone draw dynamic visualizations.

@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology relevant to your investigation…

PROBLEM:
A co-worker and I were lamenting how even when someone is willing to try an infinite canvas tool (like Mural), they still try to use it like slideware, creating uniformly sized boxes (slides) to convey information. It’s like they’ve taken a first step into an open space, but can’t let go of the decades of mental baggage and functional fixedness established by familiar tools…

HMW help others escape the self-imposed (slideware) box?!

1/?

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology

SOLUTION:

We started brainstorming—and naming—the various (1) Visual, and (2) Collaboration micro-patterns that might help someone see what’s possible..

For example:
“Zoom Out” - where slide 1 is contained within slide 2; you zoom out to reveal a broader context

Or

“Unbounded Timeline” - when you can plan events, a roadmap, whatever without running out of (slide) space.

2/?

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology

Our hypothesis is that by calling out these patterns (that we often take for granted), and reframing these as tiny (achievable) “try this when” challenges, we can provide scaffolding to help others work in more visual ways, ways not afforded by slides.

Over the course of a dinner, we identified at least 2 dozen such patterns!

3/?

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology How I see it relating to your work: We’d like to enable individuals to work in more visual (more powerful) ways to work out their own understanding and truly collaborate with (not present to) others.

The series of challenges (cards?) would be sequenced from easiest to more challenging (with most of the Collaboration patterns being more challenging, as these require shifting your mindset from broadcast to dialogue!)

4/?

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology

By trying out these patterns, someone might teach themselves the building blocks of (Digital) Visual Collaboration.

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology I love that comparison!

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology @stl8k yes—I love these ideas. I may go more with “situational” contexts, but also providing another bridge to specific domain examples would be extra helpful to convey/show relevance

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology @dahukanna @PropCazhPM @JMMaok Hard to recall how I felt at the time, TBH. Knowing there’s no one way to write a book, & that “success” is elusive, took pressure off. Also, while we all want people to buy/love the thing we make, I was creating it for me, first & foremost. I had do this to work out and share these ideas that could only be explored in that medium. I was my own worst critic! I probably wouldn’t write about something I’ve already worked out—where’s the fun in that? 😂

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology @dahukanna @PropCazhPM @JMMaok I think I also probably deluded myself into thinking that writing a book is just like a writing a bunch of blog posts, something I was already confident doing.

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology @dahukanna @PropCazhPM @JMMaok Without knowing more, you might cast a prototype/vision (could be your book, an artifact, video, whatever), then break that down into steps & assumptions… And, just start. Anywhere. Start small. (All epic stories start in the middle, right? 😜)

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology @dahukanna @PropCazhPM @JMMaok From what I’ve seen of what you’ve shared, it feels like you’re working on something really important—and ambitious. Also, something that needs to be seen/shown for many people to grok what you’re after. You might clarify your role within this mission—builder vs framer vs provocateur vs… And it might go well beyond the level of one person, and require rallying people around you.
