I eschew simplistic dichotomies for the most part but there's one that I've noticed that feels universal across different cultures, settings, scenarios, industries, domains

Two types of disposition :

The Complaint Conformist vs the Rebellious Radical

The former being people who strive for excellence in recreating and maintaining what exists and the latter who are always seeking for creating original alternatives.

@impactology Barry Johnson (Polarity Thinking) describes this as Crusading and Tradition bearing

@stephenpa love the format of the article and that they have provided a mindmap, ingenious idea

The former is perpetually trying to assimilate and exemplify the norms of a system, to find their place in it and the latter is always looking for ways to break free from it to create their own

Reminds me bit of what I wrote earlier on heuristics for finding misfits : look for incongruence

it's the site of trauma, resistance yes but it's also a site of great potential for originality

In every domain in, in every situation, in every setting look for incongruencies

Side note : Just had an idea for a principle on running an innovative organization or any sort of group : always give a space for and care/cherish the dissenters

Their source of dissent can be a source of innovation

Their source of dissent is that site of incongruence, ones who spot it and make it explicit should be cherished.

If that principle is enacted in a productive way in an org, it could flourish

Dissent receptivity, that can be a good barometer to judge workplace culture

Dissent receptivity, that can be a good barometer to judge workplace culture.

How do they approach disagreements and dissent?

From a place of curiosity or from a place of threat/insecurity/disrespect/insubordination
