Hey everyone, need your opinions! I got a for the first time and tried my hand at some cinematic shots as part of my new video on

It'll only take 3 to 4 minutes of your life and I'd really appreciate some feedback on what you think of the new styled shots. Thanks all!

@boardgamebreakdown Nicely done! The shots add movement without drawing attention to themselves. And you didn’t overuse the effect (e.g. opting to remain still on overhead shots, for overall balance and appropriateness to the content).

Ever since the LLM boom started, I've been saying that AI code generation's biggest impact will be to increase the burden on highly-skilled programmers to wade through the mountains of code created by less-skilled programmers.

The fact that I had to struggle mightily to write code when I was less skilled is how I gained the skill I have. Feels like AI code generation is stunting the development of the next generation of programmers. https://justin.searls.co/shots/2023-10-17-08h04m28s/

@searls This. I’m seeing the same thing in any domain where there is expertise—the experts see the problems in LLM generated content (relevant to that domain); everyone else thinks it works just fine—they don’t see the gaps & errors. 🙄

Now that my house is almost fixed up, I'm opening dusty old boxes and rediscovering my ships.

Like those Micro Machines I bought 30 years ago and hadn't forgotten.
And those Eaglemoss replicas I'd completely forgotten about lol

I've been seeing the term "pretotype" and tried to understand why that was being used in place of prototype.

Then I found an article that intended to explain the difference. The peak 'splainer was this part:

"One of the most famous examples of pretotyping is that of the Palm Pilot. When he had the idea for this product, the founder of Palm Computing, Jeff Hawkins, didn’t rush to build the device. He ran pretotypes to make sure that a) the product would work functionally and b) that people would actually want to buy and use them. He did this by mocking up a Palm Pilot using pieces of wood and paper, carrying it around for a few weeks and “using” it to see if it was valuable and to test other people’s interest in it. "

Ah, so exactly like a prototype. Well, that clears things up.

@axbom 😂 Yep!

I did come across another variant of prototype that felt like a worthwhile distinction: “Provocotype” (provocatype?)— a prototype designed with the explicit purpose of provoking a reaction/conversation

Just finished "A Psalm for the Wild-Built." I think I need more short pieces in my life? Would this be considered a short story? A novella? Some other literary word that I'm not using correctly?

I'm a huge advocate for learning, validating, experimenting, etc. But also… common sense!

This cartoon resonated just a little too much with me. 😜
