I eschew simplistic dichotomies for the most part but there's one that I've noticed that feels universal across different cultures, settings, scenarios, industries, domains

Two types of disposition :

The Complaint Conformist vs the Rebellious Radical

The former being people who strive for excellence in recreating and maintaining what exists and the latter who are always seeking for creating original alternatives.

Old project pitch

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology

SOLUTION:

We started brainstorming—and naming—the various (1) Visual, and (2) Collaboration micro-patterns that might help someone see what’s possible..

For example:
“Zoom Out” - where slide 1 is contained within slide 2; you zoom out to reveal a broader context

Or

“Unbounded Timeline” - when you can plan events, a roadmap, whatever without running out of (slide) space.

2/?

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology How I see it relating to your work: We’d like to enable individuals to work in more visual (more powerful) ways to work out their own understanding and truly collaborate with (not present to) others.

The series of challenges (cards?) would be sequenced from easiest to more challenging (with most of the Collaboration patterns being more challenging, as these require shifting your mindset from broadcast to dialogue!)

4/?

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology

By trying out these patterns, someone might teach themselves the building blocks of (Digital) Visual Collaboration.

I love working for a company (Mural) where I use visual thinking literally every single day! And where others are encouraged to do the same. That’s all.

Imho best way to annihilate oppressive systems is to create nourishing alternatives to them thereby rendering the former obsolete

Curated Examples of Fiscal Transparency in governments around the world to increase accountability and public participation in public infrastructure decision making by OpenGovPartnership

I think for initiatives of fiscal transparency or direct/participatory democracy to work you need a population that is not deferential to authority, instead we in India have a culture that supports, promotes and reward compliance, obsequiousness & servility to in order to acculturate

Is there any equivalent of notation, technique like state diagrams, or state-transition diagrams in performance arts? In music, dance, theatre?

Like dance notation, Laban movement analysis?

"Dance notation is the symbolic representation of human dance movement and form, using methods such as graphic symbols and figures, path mapping, numerical systems, and letter and word notations"

@dahukanna @impactology then there’s the work that Kathy Sierra created/synthesized:

@dahukanna @impactology (that talk also identifies a dozen learning principles I hold dear)

(downloadable PDF link at Vimeo page)

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@dahukanna @impactology This model asks:

Is the goal to:

  • DISCOVER something that is already known / already exists?

  • GENERATE something new (or a new combination of things)?

  • IMPROVE upon something that is already known/ exists?

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology This might be relevant, or a pre-cursor to what you’re looking for:

In Figure It Out, we wrote about 15 interaction patterns—with focus on the timeless, fundamental ways in which humans interact with information resources. We were careful to not limit these ways of interacting with information to any specific UI expression, instead focusing on how something like “annotation” can show up as a “star” feature in Mastodon, highliting text in a physical book, or ‘grabbing’ in VR.

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology Repicturing! [my description] The ability to view the same, or a subset of the same, information in multiple ways. This is a lot of what I’m working on… it’s never about one representation of information, but rather about how our understanding is enriched when we look at the same information through multiple lenses.

@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@dahukanna @impactology One is this article I wrote (also born of frustration! 🤪), critiquing traditional corporate learning & development practices. https://stephenanderson.medium.com/toward-a-new-model-for-corporate-learning-and-development-part-1-3729f0271e79

Does anyone have a strategy?

image/png

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology I don’t know that it was a strategy, but… openly sharing my ideas in public venues (talks, poster presentations, meetups, etc.) has opened doors to all sorts of interesting conversations with interesting people. Kind of an “attraction” model.

As an introvert, sharing ideas with a large group (especially early on at a synchronous event), provides a conversation starter later on. The trick then is to flip the conversation and ask others to share about what excites/intrigues them.

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@impactology The act of joining a niche group or putting in the effort to make it to a local meetup (centered on intriguing ideas, not necessarily networking), is itself an expression of curiosity, and a kind of filter.

My new idea is putting together a monster slidedeck of every template and tool I've found useful over the years, fully editable, and sell it for $10.

This actually feels more useful than writing another book. 😁

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanschultz @axbom @briankrebs Same! And… I was planning to ask you for this very thing (at least the tools/apps/services/software) part. 😜

axbom, to random
@axbom@axbom.me avatar

I've been seeing the term "pretotype" and tried to understand why that was being used in place of prototype.

Then I found an article that intended to explain the difference. The peak 'splainer was this part:

"One of the most famous examples of pretotyping is that of the Palm Pilot. When he had the idea for this product, the founder of Palm Computing, Jeff Hawkins, didn’t rush to build the device. He ran pretotypes to make sure that a) the product would work functionally and b) that people would actually want to buy and use them. He did this by mocking up a Palm Pilot using pieces of wood and paper, carrying it around for a few weeks and “using” it to see if it was valuable and to test other people’s interest in it. "

Ah, so exactly like a prototype. Well, that clears things up.

stephenpa,
@stephenpa@mastodon.social avatar

@axbom 😂 Yep!

I did come across another variant of prototype that felt like a worthwhile distinction: “Provocotype” (provocatype?)— a prototype designed with the explicit purpose of provoking a reaction/conversation
