FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA - A sprawling epic that takes a great path towards prequel success: creating brand new characters we’ve never met before and making us give a shit about them.

Set your expectations: this isn’t structured at all like FURY ROAD. It’s much more ambitious with a great deal more lore and world building.

Breathtaking action. Anya-Taylor Joy is magnificent. What a theatrical experience!

@davechensky @matt the trailer really didn’t do this movie any favors. I was very reluctant to give this a chance. It looked very derivative and without purpose. Good to hear it’s worth it. 😔

my big privacy related question is: why (seriously why) Apple keeps deleted photos on their servers indefinitely? for what really? and how that aligned with the privacy of the iPhone statements

bugs happens. that is not just a bug. that is a bug that surfaces the questionable design decisions.

@krzyzanowskim @tclementdev Nobody’s talking about servers AFAICT, the suggestion seems that files remain on the device and are reappearing after the update.

I’ve been baited into writing about touch screen Macs once more https://birchtree.me/blog/ive-been-baited-into-writing-about-touch-screen-macs-once-more/

stevenodb,
@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@matt using touch to tap big targets or scroll through lists only makes sense on computers with terrible trackpads, where people will often attach a mouse. It’s objectively terrible, but people are messed up.

I can understand the muscle memory, if you’re using a tablet in some docked mode (I don’t suffer from this at all, my laptop screen is a no-touch zone, punishable by death). But I guess my mind is formed differently. I’ve been using computers for a long time, before touch devices.

stevenodb,
@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@matt you did notice that the apple marketing picture is showing a person using the trackpad, not the screen. It doesn’t conflict with Jobs’ vertical screen hypothesis.

stevenodb,
@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@matt also, I’m using the Apple Pencil, on my iPad in a cafe, because I just hate touching the screen too much, and some tap targets on iPadOS are arguably too small already.

stevenodb,
@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@matt Apple only adds things if it changes the product in a delightful way. A touch based macOS computer is never going to be delightful, it’s a compromise to cater to the nerds. It’s never gonna happen. The macOS developer community will never on-mass change their apps to be more touch friendly, it’s just too mature of an ecosystem.

stevenodb,
@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@matt And I was implying the exact opposite. Forcing such a sea change to an old and creaky ecosystem will do more harm than good.
You might be right that it might turn away new customers and limit Mac’s potential market.
Apple could just add a touch screen and call it finished. But that’s not today’s Apple MO.

@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@matt I will ponder this some more and respond when I’m back home. ☺️

Love your work btw, I’m critical because I care deeply about this matter. 🙌

@ivory is a new share screen something that you are willing to consider working on? This thing is killing me daily. 😌

stevenodb, to random
@stevenodb@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa You didn’t waffle about a possible 13” iPad for your TV watching? It got considerably lighter and the screen is so much less crammed for video. I’ve been going back and forth for days now. The only thing stopping me is finer table reading of news on the web and the hunungus price increase. @atpfm

Nintendo, disappointing kids and their parents since they started dabbling in internet connected consoles.

The situation when you have two switches and downloaded games is maddening. 20 min of Googling and setup, followed by slower than slow downloads. 😔

@ivory double tapping an image zooms in, double tapping it again doesn’t zoom out anymore, rather it moves the tapped position more to the center.

It’s become impossible to close the image one handed.

The more Apple tweaks its image processing pipeline with ML, the more it seems to turn to shit. Peak iPhone picture quality was around iPhone X. XS was a smoothed flat mess. It recovered somewhat in 11 but has been downhill since. Anything other than a closeup of a person looks terrible 9/10 times.

The same goes for autocorrect. Still absolute shit since they started applying ML. Supposed LLM treatment in iOS 17 didn’t improve anything for me. @drahardja @atpfm https://sfba.social/@drahardja/111122240602527300
