My heart is bleeding. After 9 years using Ubuntu Touch on my main phone, I'll switch to a degoogled Android version. Too much services I regulary use implemented an app only policy or at least an only all features available if using the app policy, which kind of sucks. I ended up having two phones, but that sucks also. So in the end, I gave up.

However, thank you ubports for your ongoing efforts and hard work. I'll continue to support you financially and hope to come back to UT.

Lonesome spring skitour today. Our group departed in Winterthur at 04:00 and started our ascend at 6:30 in Juf (2125m) to Piz Surpare (3078m). Complete snow cover above 2300m.
It was slightly warmer than forcasted and the fog disappeared later. So the snow conditions were not perfect but okay. We met nobody else on that tour today. Whilst the ascend and on the summit great views to the high mountains of Grissons, Ticino and Italy.
Skiing down switched from nice to ugly to fun. All in all better than expected.
We finished the tour with some drinks at a local restaurant.

The sun on a blue sky. Two people with ski ascending a snowy mountain.
blue sky with thin clouds above snowy mountains. Thick white clouds appearing from the sout. right of the clouds the huge granit wall of Piz Badile.

1/3 Back from Davos. The Family Mountaineering of SAC Winterthur spent three days in Davos. 6 Kids from 11 to 13 years old, 5 parents and 2 SAC guides. On our first tour on Saturday we started in Sertig, ascended the southern summit of the Witihureli and skied down to Wyti. 750m ascend was a tough program for the kids, but they were super motivated and were proud of themselves.

Today my daughter and I did a little skitour in grissons near Landquart. We travelled by train to Grüsch, walked to the cable car and took it up to 1770m. There we mounted ours skins and climbed the Wannenspitz as well as partly the Fadeuzer before we skied down to Furna. As hoped for we had some really nice firn. To my surprise we were alone most of the time.
In Furna we waited for the Postauto, relaxing in the afternoon sun and took the train back home in Schiers.

We decided to enjoy the fresh snow by crossing from one valley to the next. 550m ascend and 1000m descend 😃
We went by train and bus to our starting point at Arvenbüel above the Walensee. Due to the avalanche risk we didn't ascent the Gulmen from the south-west side. instead we did a small avalanche rescue training, before we ascended the Gulmen partly from the south (less steep) just up to 1600m. Powder fun for 200m (seen in the video).
After that small detour we proceeded to "Vordere Höchi" alongside a lot of snow shoe hikers. As soon as we went right to Häderenberg following the allowed route, the crowd has been left behind. There we enjoyed the winter forest before skiing 700m down to Stein. In the beginning wonderful powder, at the end just enough to not ruin our skis.
After some delicious cake in the local café we took the bus and train back home. As usual all connections worked very well.

1/2 Yesterday my first skitour at the canton of Ticino. We started from Ossasco and went up to the "Capanna Cristallina". Much more snow then forecasted. At least 30cm. Unfortunately for us the strong winds in the morning compressed the surface quite well.
Due to the avalanche risk (3-) and to the fact neither of us knew the region we decided to ski the same way down instead of doing the more steep options in the west (30° up to 40°+). Some other groups did it, but for us it's always better safe than sorry.

me ascending the "Passo di Cristallina". I am the first to create the trail. From the left side appear strong winds transporting the fresh fallen snow. The camera panns to the "Capanna di Cristallina".

A few pictures from the 'via del veterano' in Ticino near Freggio.
After we had experienced a real rush hour at the rock last year on a Sunday, we were surprised to be alone the whole day on a Saturday.

1/2 Yesterday we scouted a planned glacier tour to decide if it is still doable for an upcoming family mountaineering weekend.
We started at Oberalppass and hiked south into the val maighels. At Piz Purtgera we left the trail and turned east, to ascent the Piz Borel.

looking upwards the glacier maighels. The glacier is without snow. A lot of rocks lay on its surface. The summit is hidden in clouds

@stk@mountains.social avatar

2/2 As expected the glacier has lost a lot of ice the last years. No snow to the very top. As a result ascending to Piz Borel or Piz Ravetsch is not possible anymore. A lot of rocks has fallen down onto the glacier and a lot of rocks are still hanging there but with visible, huge cracks, which can fall down any time. The conclusion of our tour: No glacier for family mountaineering at the planned weekend, just climbing and hiking.

Nothing the less an exhausting yet great day in the mountains.

🚨 FRIDAY QUIZ TIME 🚨
I have just provisioned a new dedicated server. It's been deployed running 22.04.3. I SSH'ed in as root, given the provided credentials. 🤓
QUESTION: What's the very first command I typed after logging in? 🤔

if you use Linux on your personal computer: what do you like about it?

I used to be super into customizing my window manager, but now I mostly like that it's so easy to install software, and that the environment is the same as on a Linux server

(please no arguing about whether people "should" use Linux on their personal computers, I'm just curious about why you personally like it)

stk,
@stk@mountains.social avatar

@b0rk It just works. Especially the window manager works flawless with virtual Desktops.
BTW as I refuse to support windows at home everyone has linux on his/her computer. Wife and all three kids. Only the oldest has also dual boot windows as school uses a lot of windows stuff. But she manages it herself.
