This could mean that syncing is in progress between these two instances. In that case, if you check back in a bit, you should see all the comments.

Edit: just to clarify, I am speculating here - I'm still learning how it all works myself

sunaurus,

It seems that if nobody on your instance has previously interacted with a particular community from another instance, then it won't show up under "all" in the communities list.

In this situation, you should be able to search for the full name of the community (!community@instance), that should trigger a sync of that community. After that, you'll be able to subscribe.

Note that it's also possible for instance admins to block some other instances completely - in that case, you won't be able to subscribe to any communities from that particular instance.

sunaurus,

Probably not replace, but certainly it could be a viable and thriving part of the picture. I don't think there's anything wrong with having options.

sunaurus,

That's a great application, but it would be ideal if such functionality was available within Lemmy itself

sunaurus,

Yep, it’s totally possible to have a federated instance with closed sign-ups.

In terms of how difficult it is to manage - I would say it depends on your experience and how exactly you want to set things up. If you don’t already have experience with setting up and monitoring servers in production then it might take you a while to figure things out.

sunaurus,

I believe that the first time somebody subscribes to a community from another instance, there might be a delay in syncing things up for that community. But later on, everything should be quite fast (I've already have some near real time comment discussions with people from other instances).

sunaurus,

What kind of warning are you seeing? I tried checking myself and it doesn't give me anything

sunaurus,

I see you set up UK Politics, cool! From other Lemmy instances, it will show up in search using this format (note the leading "!"): !ukpolitics@lemm.ee, and to share it with people completely outside Lemmy, you could just share this link: https://lemm.ee/c/ukpolitics

sunaurus,

The "all" section in the communities list will indeed show communities from other instances, but only the ones that at least one lemm.ee user has already subscribed to.

If you want to be the first lemm.ee user to subscribe to a community in another instance, then you need to go to search here on lemm.ee and search using the !community@instance style name (or alternatively, I believe you can also search for the URL of the community). This will trigger a sync of that particular community, and soon the community should show up in the communities list as well. Note that this process is a bit clunky at the moment, but I have confidence that it can be improved in upcoming versions of Lemmy.

sunaurus,

Couldn't agree more, "genius" was exactly how I described it the first time I played it.

sunaurus,

Are you into pixel art?

If so, I would recommend:

  • Chrono Trigger is a genre-defining classic and definitely still enjoyable IMO. The difficulty is quite easy overall and the game doesn't require any real grinding.
  • If you want something more fresh, Chained Echoes is a modern take on a lot of classic JRPG formulas, but still retains a lot of that great classic feel and beautiful pixel art.

If you're more interested in 3D stuff, Final Fantasy VII Remake is an excellent JRPG. While not turn based, it is accessible to beginners as you can tone down the difficulty a lot. Also, don't worry about the "VII" - you don't really need to know anything going into it.

sunaurus,

It's definitely sad, but I have hope for Lemmy and other alternatives.

sunaurus,

Any idea what time this is supposed to begin?

How has ur lemmy experience been so far?

Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...

sunaurus,

Great point, lack of infinite scroll is one of the key reasons I always kept going back to old.reddit.com (other than the speed, of course)

sunaurus,

You're welcome at lemm.ee if you'd like!

sunaurus,

Definitely not. This instance will be sticking around 😃

sunaurus,

For me personally, the quality of content drops off very quickly after page 1 (for example on my personal home feed), but with infinite scroll, I found myself very often just wading through the low quality stuff on autopilot without even realizing what I was doing. It's just a problem that I don't even have to think about when I don't have infinite scroll.

If anybody else is lost and wants a basic general-purpose home for their account, https://lemm.ee is on good hardware and open for signups.
