since some vendors are back at it, adding DRM to old single player games, seems like a good time to remind everyone that, in single player games, there is no such thing as cheating. there is simply playing a game the way you want. No matter what these asshat execs at game companies say.

I would like certain vendors to explain to me how using “dedicated, isolated cloud environments” is better for privacy than doing work on a local device. microsoft did this with the first generation of cortana, on windows phones. it did all the sort of discovery and data munging shit we expect today, and better voice commands than even siri today, and it did it locally with no network connection. it was blatantly not a cash grab for your data and existed to make life easier. and y’all hated it because Microsoft made it.

this is not the place to tell me how much you hate microsoft or its technology or to rant at me about anything.

Oh god I love Aftermath. here is Chris Person with the exact rant I’ve had in my head since looking at the rabbit r1 last night. I recommend reading the whole thing as they take apart the keynote note by note.

Everyone, it is now time to hit "publish" on all that Steamboat Willie erotica we spent last year writing... anyone? just me? no, not me. I would never.

Turns out the HOA regulations contain a clause forbidding one from "causing annoyance" of one's neighbors. Under penalty of fines and a lien on your property.

I once read an article about how HOAs and similar fascist housing authorities expect folks to reside in a place, not live there. Seems relevant today as I read the HOA threatening us to keep our holiday parties low-key.

The most shocking part, to me, of the ThreadX open source article on The Register is the paragraph about how, on the Raspberry Pi, the ARM CPU cores are child devices of the frigging GPU.

A thought that’s been stuck in my head the last few days is how quickly the mech keyboard world would fall apart, freed from the bonds of capital.

If no one was worrying about money, would so many people obtain the same 60% keyboard over and over again so they could load it up with whatever rare key switches and caps are cool this month? Would the year+ long pre-orders of the same gmk profile caps in a new colorway even exist? Or would folks finally settle in on what they need to do the computer thing, rather than display their disposable wealth? Would those of us on the accessibility side finally get a word in edgewise?

And then, would we even still be able to buy parts? I think it’s possible the only reason we can do this accessibility thing is because we’re being subsidized by r/mk and the like.

If your age is around 45, and you’re in the US, your doctor is going to recommend you do a FIT test, aka stool sample cancer screening. It’s not fun, a bit gross, but fucking do it. Do it every year. It looks for blood you otherwise can’t see which might be cancer or a precancerous polyp.

I also recommend pushing your doctor for a first colonoscopy even if you pass that FIT test. Get a baseline. Let someone actually look for problems. Polyps often have no symptoms. Not every polyp becomes cancer but every colon cancer starts life as a polyp. The prep isn’t fun but colon cancer is worse. If everything comes back good, you may not need a colonoscopy for a decade.

Why am I so hot on colon health today? Had we pushed for my partner to get a colonoscopy last year like we pondered, we might have caught their cancer much earlier. (Their prognosis is as good as it can be but earlier almost certainly would have let them skip chemo.)

And me, I pushed for a colonoscopy after my partner’s diagnosis and last week, we caught a precancerous polyp that would have been super bad fucking news in a bad spot in a few years. (It was already bad news but not “major surgical intervention” bad news)

So do your FIT test. Get a colonoscopy. Stay on top of that. It’s not fun. But the alternative is even less so.
