I don’t think future generations will be bewildered at all, I think they will just be angry at us for sitting down and taking it because we were afraid to make things worse and collectively try anything else than let ideologically bankrupt centrists run the show with their strategy of slowly dialing back, in tinyyyyy increments, ongoing mass scale human rights atrocities and the astoundingly cataclysmic extinction of biodiversity and habitat.

I think future generations will be nauseatingly disgusted at how we laughed at environmental “extremists” who chained themselves to old growth trees, lit logging equipment on fire, blew up oil pipelines and fumbled around trying any desperate action they could to stop the incredible unfolding mass scale death, human and animal. They will look at the rest of us like condescending assholes on a sinking ship who spent the last few minutes of their life bullying the few weirdos who realized the ship was sinking and were trying to sound the alarm and distribute life vests while we sat in our deck chairs drinking with the captain, pointing and laughing at how stupid and useless the frantic passengers trying to save lives looked in their pathetic attempts to get everyone’s attention (who didn’t give a shit like us).

Future generations won’t be confused, they will just talk of the generations that were alive between the 1950-2030 as pariahs, as disgusting examples of how a generation of people can decide to en masse foreclose the future of their children, their grandchildren, their great grandchildren and so on… Societies all over the world for thousands of years will study how badly 1950s-2030s US culture fucked up (and also of course extending back into European colonialism) and people will rightfully use us as a punching bag when talking about how pathetic a group of powerful cowards can be.

There will be no bewilderment I promise you.

There is always a future, we are just in denial about it because the foundation of our entire world views are reliant on an an intense alienation from futurity.

Things will not end, humanity probably won’t die out in the next couple of hundred years, humans and animals (and plants etc…) will have to subsist through an immense amount of suffering that we needlessly and knowingly caused. In some ways this is more awful than it all just ending in one big bang, which is why we are so culturally obsessed with apocalyptic visions that are immediate, complete and draw a clear demarcation between “before the apocalypse” and “after the apocalypse”. We know deep down that the scariest thing about living during this time is that apocalypses generally don’t work like that, they come in like tides, faster than you can imagine but also in cyclic pulses that recede and return with greater force… and all the time you are so exhausted from the struggle to maintain your shitty daily life that you don’t have the energy or willpower to save yourself or anyone else around you… so you have to keep going through the same awful grind you had to before the apocalypse (except now more stressful and worse) even while everything around you is comically collapsing into great heaps until one day you drop dead from the exhaustion of the daily grind or the tide sweeps in and takes you away.

supersquirrel,

Every generation has probably done that, but you know what, future generations will be right to point the finger at us.

The better damn well point the finger at us lest they risk not learning the horrific lessons of our time.

supersquirrel, (edited )

I think division is actually very important, younger generations face an existential need to sever themselves from the worldview and belief systems their parents raised them under (and return to value systems that have embodied humanity for literally the entire rest of our history) in order to save as much of humanity and nature as possible.

Inaction as well is possibly our most potent weapon against the coming mass experience of suffering that climate change will wrought upon us. We all have to stop doing, we need to grind the global economy to a halt and scare the shit out of capitalists to the point that bargaining with us is preferable to letting the scarier alternative happen.

To be fair Louisiana can’t do much more than alternate between crying and sticking its head in the sand. Unfortunately it is the state where a whole lot of oil refineries and disgusting chemical plants have set up shop and that has just locked the state into a death spiral politically. Louisiana is absolutely FUCKED though from climate change and I think you have to see the batshit crazy behavior of people there from that context. Climate Change is going to demolish the lives of people who live in Louisiana (actually by the numbers it is going to somehow be FAR worse than Florida) and no matter how much denial you are in about Climate Change the fear will keep seeping into these people’s psyches no matter what, like rising flood waters slipping between the cracks of buildings…

It is useless to try to understand why the ideological contagions of religious fundamentalism and conservatism are so widespread in Louisiana outside the context of the state being a trashcan for the entire US oil and chemical industrial complex. This kind of suffering, ideological dissonance with basic aspects of reality and obsession with issues that are massive distractions from unfolding mass scale health catastrophes (like healthcare being an utterly failed system in the US or rent being completely unaffordable) are a fundamental requirement for petroleum and chemical companies to maintain their incredibly destructive existence, otherwise they would be shut down almost immediately by angry masses of citizens.

supersquirrel,

A lot of annoyances that people regularly deal with on computers are either intended mechanisms to stop human bad actors or unintentional bugs passing off as features. You can’t really say the same about demons.

…I am honestly kind of terrified if you think the current state of computers and software is fine, I really hope you dont work in software design for the sake of the rest of us.

Every broadly intelligent computer programmer I have talked to agrees, corporations dont build software like elegant well planned skyscrapers they build them as multistory slums each piece added on in a rush until the whole thing collapses.

supersquirrel,

Or is this a case of sufficiently advanced technology being indistinguishable from magic?

No this is a case of technology sufficiently broken and enshittified to the point that you can’t ever trust it to work right, simply or even logically if it was made by a large tech company.

“Bro there is nothing Biden can do more to stop the genocide of Palestinians. You want to risk the Orange man winning again in order to put pressure on Biden to save a paltry handful of Palestinians (what 60,000 people at most we can save?) if we lose it is your fault for Biden refusing to stop a genocide in a country that is entirely under the leverage of US military and political power because you wouldn’t do anything to stop the genocide. Thanks for letting Biden and the rest of us down you selfish prick. You are the reason Trump will win” —-centrist democrats trying to convince me to join into a coalition with them and vote for their candidate.

It really feels like this group of people learned precisely the wrong lesson from Hillary getting demolished in her presidential campaign, i.e. shame voters into voting for you.

Also it’s hilarious these people think Biden gives a fuck about the lives of innocent Palestinians and just can’t do anything to save them because of cold hard geopolitics. Like, those are US fighter jets dropping US bombs by pilots who have likely trained very closely with US fighter pilots, and the sorties being flown to slaughter Palestinians are likely according to training and direction of US military personnel. Not to mention the immense amount of money and political cover Israel gets as a blank check from the US.

It’s like, I’m sorry I hate to break it to you Biden voters but Biden isn’t against Israel’s genocide in any meaningful sense beyond empty rhetoric (remember how he said he couldn’t fight to raise the minimum wage to $15 because of the… parliamentarian…???) and he would rather risk losing the election than listen to the majority of US citizens who disapprove of supporting Israel in it’s heinous actions.

That is the sticking point for me, fuck the big orange guy, but if Biden thinks he can ignore progressives and other voices in the US clamoring to stop this awful genocide and still will this presidential election, I cannot support that kind of cynicism and structural betrayal of the progressive coalition with centrist democrats.

It is shocking how this tragedy exposes how the ideology of centrist democrats is founded on nothing other than an averaging function of people around them, there is no actual substance or beliefs, purely a cynical middle of the road calculation. Most of the time these people slip by fitting into the general conversation around ethics and politics almost invisibly, but the Palestinian genocide truly shows how little these people will ever listen to reason rather than just obsessively tracking what they perceive as the middle ground viewpoint no matter how insane or hurtful it is, even when it is leading to a horrendous mass killing that almost the entire rest of the world utterly condemns (who aren’t Allie’s of the US and afraid to piss us off).

Do it, fucking go crazy, let all your weird fucked up dark fantasies out, as both a very chaotic person but also a very thoughtful and caring person, fucking now is the time to do it.

Linux has gotten really good, drivers are good. You can do it and your headaches will be so much less in the end.

Come over to the bright side.

Let your dark fantasies about doing lots of dirty things through the command line or whatever come true. Install a bunch of open source software and don’t even tell your husband.

It is 2024 do whatever the fuck you want, corporations have completely folded their hands and completely quit even playing the game of providing you (not rich person) with functional visions of products or even functional products. Why? I don’t even know honestly, I mean I am definitely a nerd about open source software and a raging socialist but it is truly astonishing how quick enshittification is in this late stage of 2024, it is the continual experience of standing im front of a massive glacier and watching square kilometer chunks calving and collapsing for no apparent logical reason.

supersquirrel,

It is a joke of a slur

You can call me a cis-gender… you might get a laugh out of me but that’s about it.

Because nobody has seriously threatened your life for being cisgender, nobody has harassed you in a coordinated fashion because you are cisgender, cisgender is just a term that can be applied to you that doesn’t really affect you either way.

Words that are slurs are the record of violence and suffering inscribed into letters, you can’t treat those words the same and the fact that Musk is doing this is pathetic as fuck.

supersquirrel,

being in a minority doesn’t mean you get a monopoly on being treated like shit.

True but being in a significant majority however does mean you get a monopoly on being able to wield actual societal and structural power (whether it be through family relationships, social relationships, the workplace, healthcare services and any number of other contexts) to hurt groups of people. Being part of the majority, at any point you can divest from the social contract and just look over at somebody who is almost exactly the same as you and say “well, we know which side we are on wink”. Having agency over when you and your group honors the social contract and basic rules of communities (i.e. you don’t show up to peaceful protests to beat the shit out of peaceful protestors, run them over or shoot them with an assault rifle) means that any point violence can be deemed acceptable by your group for a unilateral aim that ignores the rest of society. This Happens All Of The Damn Time. Cops do this with rightwing bigot constantly, shitty people of all types do this.

supersquirrel, (edited )

I mean the rest of us don’t mind, it’s like game of thrones it’s so hard to keep track of all the characters so when people just put it out there and literally sign their posts, I mean shrug fair.

Hate is a bad flavor of ice cream but like, yeah by all means if people want to tear their mask off, throw the dog whistle away, please it helps the rest of us realize who the hateful clowns are with dysfunctional capacities to apply empathy or even basic humanity to entire categories of people. Honestly it makes these conversations soooooo much easier and faster when the hateful authoritarian people just actually self label themselves as such.

To all the cisgender sad lonely people out there who would never hurt a soul, transgender or otherwise, I see you and I love you but shut the fuck up you aren’t being hunted down by threatening white men in pickup trucks who are drunk and are all friends with the sheriff so if they get violent with you for being a queer I mean the sheriff is gonna understand the boys getting rowdy right? So what they tied you up and raped you and drove away leaving your body as a crime scene.

That is the difference. Y’all are talking about feelings, queer people are talking about their fucking lives and we better damn well listen because we are next into the meat grinder.

supersquirrel,

Seriously somebody showing their nipples, even if they are female nipples doesn’t actually ruin anything for anyone ever.

It is just people ruining it for everyone by having a moral panic about nipples.

supersquirrel,

I know as Americans we consider ourselves the center of the universe but this is one of those things that warrant it.

With Trump’s last win we saw Argentina, Belarus, Brazil, Philippines, Australia, and Italy (just naming a few) in power crazy nut jobs.

If you argument is that US presidents set global trends than see exhibit a) Palestinians for the future of how the U.S. and other western countries will treat their citizens and how institutional power will utterly deny it the entire time.

If Biden does not stop this genocide now a new era of violence is being normalized and in conjunction with climate change destroying food security and access to clean water it is going to be very very dark.

If Biden does not budge on Palestine even though there is a strong and clear signal from the American people to do so than we have already lost and people upset at me for not not voting for Biden (if he continues to refuse to budge) are yelling into the void.

supersquirrel,

This is something that men are basically incapable of, especially if they have been successful in their career. They literally can’t conceive of things not being their business.

supersquirrel,

These statistics make me vomit in my mouth, ughh men are really fucked up. I am a man, I love many men in my life but damn…we are pretty broken on the whole.

supersquirrel,

That is how you keep a community peaceful, not civil.

In order to keep a community civil you have to understand when conflict is needed and also what types of people are usually silenced either by trolls or by selective enforcement of rules or community guidelines.

supersquirrel, (edited )

Hey fren, I may have mixed up my words but I was agreeing with you.

I guess I should have just said “no justice no peace” because that about sums it up right?

The absence of chaos does not equal civility or peace, order and uniformity imposed upon a living history of injustices, prejudices and systematic inequality does not create civility, this is why moderators need to be diverse and understand the context of the conversations they are moderating. There is no neutral, a moderation system is like a suspension system in car, it cannot eliminate the bumps in the road, it cannot eliminate the impulse from the car hitting those bumps, it can only react and moderate the resulting acceleration of the car’s chassis.

Car suspension is tuned to ideally behave like a critically damped system, the impulse hits, discomfort happens, but the springs provide a moderating force that returns the vehicle back to its normal ride height as quickly as possible without wild oscillations from underdamping but also crucially without overly suppressing the impulse either and causing overdampening where an impulse is never really resolved, or processed and the car doesn’t really return to its normal ride height for a long time.

No moderation creates wildly underdamped systems, but “everybody is equal and subject to the same precise rules no matter the context” moderation creates overdamped systems where pre-existing injustices and systematic prejudices are encoded into the dynamics of the system, departures from a stable norm are preserved and enlarged and while the suspension system may appear to behaving normally from the outside (no wild oscillations) it isn’t really functioning.

It isn’t easy, but I don’t think it is worth lamenting how hard moderation of communities is. It will until the end of time be one of the most difficult problems to solve long after we have spaceships and unlimited healthcare and cold fusion. That is just the way it is, and we have to do our best and we also have to be willing to say it how it is.

Which is all to say if a black person comes onto the fediverse and starts calling this white af space racist and isn’t being polite about it… well we should think long and hard before silencing that person shouldn’t we? People have a right to be upset when they have been hurt, and we don’t have a right to expect them to be polite about it after a certain point.

We do have a responsibility to understand the context though, and that can lead to understanding how someone who is very outwardly angry and confrontational is actually participating in harm reduction in a community by confronting the overdamped inequalities locking the system into an unnaturally depressed state.

supersquirrel,

Just a bunch of sheep

nope these are all great pyrenees mountain dogs fuck

(Seriously these dogs look exactly like sheep from far away, it must be a very rude awakening for a wolf or other predator to realize no that is just a massive dog).

supersquirrel,

Do you expect we learn his language so he can feel welcomed?

Yes, I do, because I believe the US is meant to be a dynamic shifting idea and that means we should commit to extending a curious hand of welcome to every new group of people that finds their way here.

Yes we should learn that new persons language, why not? It is good for your brain, studies have shown learning languages is extremely stimulating and healthy for your mind so I don’t see the issue here?

The incredible diversity of bomb ass food, art, ideas and general life that a diverse community of migrants brings to a city is invaluable to the citizens that live there who are local. Learning how to say a handful of words in another language is a tiny optional price to pay for all of those benefits.

supersquirrel,

No War But The Class War

supersquirrel,

Yes usually they are, but in this particular case one side has rock solid solidarity among people of their side and is very honest and aware of the class war going on and the other (i.e. the 99%) is largely composed of people that get upset and annoyed at you if you point out we are in a war, we both are on the same side, and we are losing the war bad like catastrophically bad.

supersquirrel,

Hi, foreign agent here.

I am part of a secret plot to manipulate the US in a devious plan to…. check notes… get Biden to stop directly enabling genocide by continuously bringing up and forcing him to deal with it politically instead of just sweeping 50,000+ innocent Palestinians lives under the rug.

It is the perfect evil plan.
