Love Obsidian, but for the past 2-3 weeks it would freeze and get slow.
TIL

  1. Themes and plugins must be upgraded separately from core
  2. iCloud appears to not automatically download all files, or quietly reverts some files to cloud only, making indexing and search in obsidian super slow
    3.Pages with large markdown table with broken formatting can cause Obsidian to become unresponsive for over a minute each time you try to open that page. Suspect this is a bug?

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@outofcontrol

  1. I find this plugin helps - https://github.com/swar8080/obsidian-plugin-update-tracker
  2. That is how iCloud tends to be and it isn't restricted to Obsidian. You should consider switching data sync service.
  3. Technically that's a bug in the content, but I see room for better handling by the editor as this can happen in normal editing. Honestly I find live preview edit of a note with a large table cumbersome, so I switch to source mode whenever I need to do that 😔
sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@outofcontrol I started with syncing via Git and that was okay. I switched after 5-6 months to Obsidian's own sync and that has been rock solid and fast, and works places I couldn't access Git quite so easily (the driver for my switch).

I do sync one vault via iCloud, but it isn't one I use much as its one I use as a reference vault for showing people. And my iCloud Drive use generally is fairly light across my apps. A few docs (etc.), config files, scripts, and backup copies.

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@outofcontrol you have nothing to lose by trying. At least nothing mentioned should be losing data, it is more ireliability of content availability and ease of access (at minimal/zero cost).

Your current solution is seemingly no longer fit for purpose, so backup everything and give it a try.

my setup and usage is kind of a double-edged sword. while nothing slips through it is a bit complicated and hard to maintain (I need a good amount of time for my weekly reviews).

Stats from my current setup:
projects: 67
labels: 13
tasks: 605

I want to streamline it - do you have any tips to approach this?

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@flohgro dated deferral to move things on that don't need to be progressed and reviewed yet and narrow the weekly review down to only things in that sort of weekly time frame.

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@flohgro judging by the volumes listed you have too much granularity, unrealistic expectations of progress, or data that is being reviewed that is appearing prematurely on your list of things to review. I'm assuming the latter to be the most likely explanation. So I am suggesting if you do have that you need to defer them from your weekly review - e.g. To a monthly review. One way you might do this is to filter by a deferral date.... if Things supports this.

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@flohgro when you say streamline then, what is the friction if not the volume, as inferred by your stats?

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@flohgro are you missing information on those tasks or on your week's constraints? What is it that makes this the point of friction? Importance is a measure of value and urgency a measure of timeliness of the need. They seem independent, but could both apply to a task - that magic quadrant in your Eisenhower matrix.

> works with plain .md files
No, it doesn't. Not only those files aren't following any of the stardard markdown flavours, but also obsidian doesn't even have official export to markdown.
That means, the moment this proprietary tool gets enshittified you might lose all your internal links and attachments.
Don't believe it? try to move to other note taker and prove me wrong

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@graphito @kepano
"Destruction of internal links and links to attachments or failure to provide the data originally submitted by user is a breach of user's rights."

Maybe I missed something but have you input links as content that has somehow changed to different content?

I thought you just illustrated with your video that you had entered them as per the details in the app's docs and they stayed the same.

As I say, maybe I missed something in your explanation? 🤷🏻‍♂️

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@graphito @sylumer so you chose not to configure the applixation to meet your needs (which can be done with a simple option you showed in tour video), saw the data entered was not in a format you liked and then went ahead with it anyway. That isn't bread thing anything I. That sense. There is nk I automation there causing data loss. You are choosing to ignore system config and the data.

The Action Bar in @drafts holds many of my most used and really simple actions for regular usage:

  • sort draft (move to archive / flagged / trash)
  • switch modes (editor modes like link / typewriter)
  • open command palette (to search through my actions)
  • copy & paste (much quicker than the iOS standard interface)

Not every workspace use the same setup for the Action Bar but a lot of them do for me :)
What do you have in your action bar in Drafts?

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@flohgro @drafts

I have various action groups I prefix with a keyboard icon and "KB" that I use in the Action row. I have them switch for the various workspaces. Many of them are bespoke to what is required for multi step processing of content. Almost all of them reference actions available in the Action groups I show in the side bar.

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@flohgro @drafts

The more general use actions I have in the Action row tend to be for interacting with the clipboard and sharing or inserting content - like converting lines to and from a Markdown list.

Most of mine only have 2 or 3 actions in them, I only have one I think that scrolls. But I actively try and limit what is in there to things I am guaranteed to need to use while working on a draft in that workspace.

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@agiletortoise @flohgro @sylumer
iPhone : always used.

iPad : always shown, used only if no external keyboard.

Mac : I show it for one workspace where I more or less have a sequential process for something that requires manual work between steps.

... I might actually switch that into a section of an action group at the side as I always show the action list on the Mac. I just need to check if there is on screen space as I don't want to scroll for those actions when I need them.

Are you an avid app user? I've recently shared some plugin templates that you might find useful. These aren't your typical templates. instead, these templates are intended to take your existing text selection and convert it.

• Sort your selection alphabetically. No problem.

• Convert your heading to title case. Got you covered.

• Merge multiple lines copied as a paragraph from a PDF back into a paragraph. But of course.

... plus many more.

I installed a Quick Look extension via Homebrew yesterday. It is called "Syntax Highlight", and it does exactly what it says on the tin. Now I can finally peek into the various config and code files I have on my without having to open them in an editor.

One thing I do need to think about is why on earth it took me so many years to even bother looking for an extension like this given how often I wished I had one.

Question for the folks!

How many different vaults are you using? Is everything in one mega vault, or do you split it around?

What's your system?

I'm looking to organize my stuff a bit better. At the moment I have one for my DnD stuff and one for my YT/Twitch/Private stuff.

I'm not entirely certain if this is the most efficient way of doing things.

Let me know!

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@Imperor one vault for anything that is just for me (personal, work, etc.) other vaults are all ones I share out to others or at least plan to at some point in the future.

Target audience is what drives the segregation into separate vaults for me.

@rosemary is there a known issue with the Automators podcast forum? I haven't been able to get past the loading screen for several days, including via private browser session as well as my usual logged in mobile app and browser sessions. Other Discourse forums I can access fine ... so I'm assuming it's not just me.

sylumer,
@sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

@rbender @rosemary I'd personally be against any combining.

I left the MPU forum due to the behaviour of some of the forum members towards me & I'm afraid I would not wish to return.

Also, they are two different communities for two different podcasts with two different sets of hosts (one overlapping).

There would also be the technical challenges of merging two forums. Combinng user accounts & credentials, post IDs, redirects for existing show note & general web links, etc.

    @agiletortoise I bet you also have to provide a pencil for manual rewind and tensioning of the cassettes.

    That is truly one strange choice of nostalgic tech to sell today. Plus it looks more industrial than personal - appealing to brutalists maybe?

    Unfortunately, I cannot make use of it. I disposed of all my cassettes and CDs a long time ago, so it isn't for me.

    ... though I can neither confirm nor deny that I still have an MD walkman in a box that I just can't bear to part with 🙄

    I created some @drafts actions to support linking Drafts with eachother, finding drafts linking to the current draft and opening wiki-style-links from the current draft.

    You can download them in the directory with the links below

    I'm eager to hear how you link your Drafts together (if you do) and maybe also what you're missing right now. [1/2]

    I still author anything involving more than light scripting via an editor outside of Drafts on both iPad and Mac - as per what I’ve shared previously on the forum, blog posts, etc.

    I defintely reuse code and pull in via require() for common personalised stuff for me and via TADpoLe for more braoadly useful code.

    sylumer,
    @sylumer@mastodon.social avatar

    @jslr @flohgro @Yvonnezed

    I keep actions as templates for quick duplication for new actions.

    Code snippets however get put in SnippetsLab and more in depth info in Obsidian.

    And I still have many actions just in case I need them 🤓

    For what it's worth, you can get the VS Code setup on the iPad if it makes things easier cross platform. I have Runestone and Textastic, but I specifically stick to a common platform for external editing of Drafts scripts as I can get the common code completion experience with a single common config.

    Been thinking about my Uncle Robert a lot lately. He was every bit the character you would imagine he was from this video, and one of the most infectiously positive, creative, encouraging people you could hope to meet. We lost him to COVID in the pre-vaccine days.

    @agiletortoise sorry to here he's no longer around - his positivity really does come across in that video. Made me smile in the first five seconds and laugh several times before the end ... and it wasn't just the lyrics.
