A lot of us (Israeli/ex-Israeli left) are caught between a rock and a hard place: my opinion (I think pretty common) is that Hamas and Netanyahu's government are both bad, both need to go away, the occupation needs to end and Hamas are a terrorist organization harming both Israelis and Palestinians.

tametick,

The above gets you both calls from Israelis that it's not strong enough condemnation of Hamas, from Palestinians that it's not strong enough condemnation of the occupation and Netanyahu, and a mixture of both from elsewhere.

It's not a contradiction to oppose both and not productive to argue about who is "worse" among the two. They are both terrible & are both an obstacle for peace and the sooner we get rid of both the better.

Just did a major re-balance of to the stars....it's a ton easier now, feels just right to me which means it's probably still way too hard.

Slowly running out of fresh testers who haven't played previous incarnations of the game yet, so DM me if you want to test!

here's a hell of an infographic to start your week with (from https://newsletter.gamediscover.co/p/most-pc-games-gross-1000-should-we)

It's new engine time for many people!

What is something crucial for you in a game engine?
An absolute must-have feature?

Is it built-in editor? Resource management? Specific scripting language? Memory management? File format compatilibity?

What is it?

tametick,

@sos yes

I remember back in the day I used to log in too google plus just to read @Danc's posts, I guess now I do that with mastodon

Every once in a great while someone will say something complimentary and I'll be "...but, but, but...I struggle to feed myself" ๐Ÿ˜“

tametick,

@SmallisBeautiful @Danc sounds more like ADHD (I don't have specifically the food preparation issues but do have others)

Unity to Godot retrospective, as of 4.0 beta when we tried it for about 2 months (maybe half a year ago):

tametick,

pros:

  • free
  • no shitty company
  • editor is very light and snappy
  • with jetbrains rider & github copilot not hard to switch from unity (using c# in both)
  • a bit easier to extend their own classes than unity's
tametick,

cons:

  • bugs - might have been cause it was beta
  • quality of life features: e.g. input handling is much more basic, no built in line renderers, trail renderers, no public update() with Time.deltaTime (you have to inject/call it yourself)
  • log is shittier than unity's
  • docs were not as good, at least during beta
  • c# support was incomplete, some stuff you still needed to do in gdscript
  • inspector was cluttered / messy compare to unity
tametick,

none of the cons are deal breakers in production for a new game imo. a bit more annoying when prototyping as you want rapid iteration and the QoL features missing (compared to unity) can get in the way of that.

tametick,

@roughnight im sure it isn't but that's what was available when i was testing

tametick,

@sol_hsa yep, that's right! i was just listing off the top of my head. i think it makes sense for sure im the long term.

tametick,

@roughnight didn't take it as an insult :)

Apropos of nothing, make sure you don't have auto renewal enabled in https://id.unity.com/en/subscriptions/ (it's on by default and they just roll you in for another year if you forgot) #indiedev #gamedev #unity

In these layoff-laden times, do I know any #gamedev that can use a short term (3 months) freelance gig on a small game? #unity3d #indiedev

I could teach a course on inventing new games and it would be totally useless. No one would learn anything. (Though they might think they did.๐Ÿ˜…)

tametick,

@Danc I'm ready to sign up anyway!

I "love" how the internet sometimes reminds you you're old when you stumble around random comments like "i remember coming home from school one day and finding out out my dad bought a nintendo switch! it was the best day of my life"

From the people who brought you "can anyone with an iPhone test a build of my game?" (i.e. me), comes: anyone willing to test my game on win or mac? And record yourself playing? ๐Ÿ™

Anyone knows if I can use itch coupon codes for a game that isn't yet public (it has a password protected itch page)? Basically if I want to do stuff like give access to people to an unreleased game that they will retain after release in their itch library.

You can now wishlist my game To the Stars on Steam! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2073490/To_the_Stars/

Boosts appreciated ๐Ÿ™

Was reading Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Someone's impression of game development in the 90s having researched what indie game dev was like in the 2010s.

I have complicated thoughts about "cultural appropriation" of games by various groups historically outside the creation of games.

A lot of shallow takes that center their culture, needs and philosophy.

It irks me, but I also realize it is inevitable.

tametick,

@indieadvisor @Danc @shivelysanders I know a bunch of good books, but IIRC none of them fiction
