Factoid Extra: The Allegro Equipe was a car that typified all that was wrong about BL in the late ‘70s - an ill-advised limited edition that sold so slowly it inadvertently became a semi-permanent part of the range (it took 18mths to shift the last car & remember it was based on the discontinued Allegro 2 too) & it had porous alloy wheels.

Then again, if you were offered one today you’d probably jump at the chance - I would, if only to experience that lurid orange interior…

Just rewatched Death Ray 2000. Dan OʼHerlihy and Rongotai College old boy Clive Revill as the villain were the highlights. But the pacing was terrible. No wonder the lead actor was replaced, but Iʼm surprised this even went to series based on this pilot.
Iʼm glad it did though. I was a big fan of A Man Called Sloane.

thecarfactoids,

@jackyan I believe that was the last TV series made by Quinn Martin (now, I may be wrong so apologies but it was certainly one of the last)…

thecarfactoids,

@jackyan Barnaby Jones, I often wondered why it lasted so long.

It was no Cannon & somebody took time to do this & frankly I’m glad they did…

thecarfactoids,

@jackyan Yes, a proper repertory company.
I believe it was a spin-off.
TV is far more inclusive these days (speaking as a gay man) but then it really needed to be …

thecarfactoids,

@jackyan Absolutely 👍

Btw, I guess mention of the ITC shows means I have to link to that unfortunate Mk1 Jaguar…

Factoid Extra: October 6th, 1955 - arguably one of the most significant days in the history of the car as that’s when the Citroën DS had its debut at the Paris Salon.

Never before had such an advanced car been launched & you could say it hasn’t been equalled since…

When I featured the Sunbeam Talbot Alpine on the other day, @petes_bread_eqn_xls and @Holberg pointed out that a similar model was driven by Grace Kelly in the 1955 film ‘To Catch a Thief’. Here’s another car with a cinematic connection, the 1904 12hp ‘Genevieve’ which starred in the 1953 film of the same name. This is the original car, which I snapped at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, where it was on loan this summer from the Louwman collection

thecarfactoids,

@davidwilkins @petes_bread_eqn_xls @Holberg I recall that John Gregson couldn’t actually drive before the film was made…

Factoid Extra: Amazing what a corner can tell you about a car.
Motor photographed these four in 1977, but how did they rate them?
Well, the Alpine & Cavalier were considered the best & the Cortina, reservations with damping aside, was considered good too.
The Princess got the ‘wooden spoon’ not just here, but in the Group Test overall.
Personally, a bit of a surprise & frankly I feel it might be an ‘off’ test car - sadly not an isolated occurrence or indeed much later.

Factoid Extra: Well, it’s the Classic Mini’s 64th anniversary today & what better way to mark it than this collection of ads over the years.

Factoid Extra: I don’t believe I’ve shared the extraordinary launch ad for the ‘84 Corvette before on this platform & if you haven’t seen it, buckle up…

Words are inadequate to describe this 90 second spectacle which could either be an exercise in Detroit bombast or self-parody.

One thing is certain, you won’t watch it once…

Factoid Extra: Less car ad, more scene from an ITC adventure series…

I know, hard to believe something so basic was optional once but it was for the Mk3 Cortina when it was launched & it wasn’t just the case for just family cars like this - a heated rear window was optional on a Series 1 XJ6 2.8 when it was launched…
