I’ve been thinking about the connection between game industry layoffs and a 30 year low in Memorial Day movie ticket sales. Coupling this with Walmart’s recent earnings report that shows people are spending more on essentials and less on discretionary goods, this may be a HIRP.

High interest rates mean people are spending more on mortgages, car loans and credit card bills. There’s simply less money to spend on entertainment.

So both movies and games need to work harder to make the same money.

@carnage4life Good argument on the HIRP, hadn’t thought of that. I think it’s also impossible to ignore the steepening economic-inequality numbers; when the 1% are creaming off almost all the upside, it leaves the majority stretched thinner and thinner. Your LVMH data is relevant here.

Every paragraph makes me want to puke about what humans will inflict on other humans. I still believe, against the evidence, that we can be better than this.

No argument can stop Israel’s bloodthirsty leaders. The only thing I can think of is to re-run the BDS/boycott playbook that was deployed against South Africa. Start with the Olympics?

@deirdresm @jalcine I find the back-and-forth over the term “apartheid” really unhelpful. I’m old enough to remember real capital-A Apartheid. It is a fact that Hamas slaughtered 1000+ Israelis, mostly civilians, and that Israel has slaughtered 30,000+ Gazans, mostly civilians, and continues the slaughter, and that both these need to be condemned without accusations of Islamophobia or Antisemitism.

@deirdresm @jalcine Really? I pay pretty close attention and I hear pretty well no naked Antisemitism. I can't help noticing that a lot of the people pushing back are Jews. I hear a certain amount of anti-Zionism, and that's a tough issue. In theory (protect Jews from oppression) impossible to argue against but the implementation has been, um, problematic. I think we should blame Bibi and his henchmen, rather than Zionism, for the starving babies in Gaza.

How waterproof are iPhones? I used my iPhone 14pro as a snorkeling camera back in February (it was already over a year old, so I decided to risk it), washed it out and it seemed fine. Did it again a few times. No problem. However the battery is getting weak so I took it in to Apple for a battery replacement. They opened it up and found corrosion due to water damage so didn’t replace the battery… I only buy even numbered iPhones so hopefully it keeps working until the 16 comes out.

@adrianco Strongly recommend the Olympus/OM “Tough” models. I have the TG-6 and it's been great.

@adrianco Our family is in Android-land and when we break a phone or its battery runs down, we go to a phone-repair storefront, and if we're willing to pay for a new battery they replace the damn battery without any questions about why. There are some problems where the repair is too expensive to be worth it, but usually not. These places tend to also say they repair iPhones…

men are such fucking spineless dweebs they took a meme about how women fear for their very lives around strange men and compared it to men thinking women don’t understand their fee-fees

@rebeccawatson “Fee-fees”… Is that new? Never seen it before. Excellent! Will steal and use.
