So after me nagging him for a year or more @mathsppblog has finally seen the light regarding Mastodon! (Unlikely because of me, but Iโ€™ll take the win).

Heโ€™s not tooted yet, but if is your thing I highly recommend you follow my fellow ex- developer and one of the 67%.

When a generator function or another iterator object wants to augment the way "for" loops work, it might be necessary to manually call iter and next.

What tips do you have for folks thinking of trying out Mastodon during this year?

3 of my tips:

  1. Follow the hashtag (yes you can follow a hashtag just like following a profile!)
  2. If you post and realize you forgot the hashtag, don't delete your post. Just edit it!
  3. Consider following the hashtag also. Many folks use it without realizing that is the official one.

You know that Parks and Rec episode where thereโ€™s an Easter egg hunt and the kids canโ€™t find any eggs, because there arenโ€™t any.
For this year, is the park, and Iโ€™m one of the eggs.
Enjoy PyCon and talk with lots of people, but donโ€™t look for me. :)

Today in my code I used:

I found it less ugly than the alternative:

result = list(filter(None, [item.do_something() for item in sequence]))

Though I'm not entirely convinced it's easier to reason about.

@FunkyBob I'm always torn between using a walrus in this case or using a generator expression followed by a list comprehension. I do both, and sometimes one seems more readable than the other and sometimes the other seems more readable. ๐Ÿคท

Some tips from @glyph

โ€ข Attend open spaces
โ€ข Host an open space
โ€ข Drink lots of water and be mindful of your body

And a big one for long-time conference attendees especially: deliberately plan some of your meals toward meeting NEW people instead of always hanging out with old friends.

A tip from @hynek and @glyph:

Attend talks and occasionally attend the "hallway track" as a means to have a shared experience with folks who you just watched a talk with.

โ€ข At lunch and breakfast, ask "is this seat taken" and if it's not, you've just joined a conversation over a meal
โ€ข Ask folks what inspired them to attend PyCon, what they've enjoyed most so far, and what they use (or plan to use) Python for
โ€ข Take a quiet break alone when you need it and keep the quiet room in mind
โ€ข As the day starts to wrap up, ask folks if they have dinner plans

here early. Downtown is never F-150 friendly. Found a garage with 6โ€™10โ€ ceilings.

Hoping the hotel valet parking is equally roomy.

Found Nicholas coffee. Found tables in market square park.

Weather (so far) is a delight. Venue looks great.

I was on the program committee and the content looks great.
