Yo ever procrastinate cleaning so hard that you spend two days coding something that is so niche and worthless that it leaves you wondering... why didn't you just clean 🤡

Anyways. Here's a tool that suggests ideal commanders for an format my friends made up. I'm going to go clean now

Just got a quick script up and running for #tidal to fix music that has become unavailable. If it find a song with an exact title match from the same artist it will add the new song and remove the old one.

Now that 3.13 has reached the last alpha version and feature freeze and beta period is coming near, I have updated my Python Versions post with my favourite changes in 3.13:

is really awesome for development.

packages mixed with virtual env, so if a Nix package doesn't exist for a specific python module, then pip can be used.

What trick do y'all use when a function takes a Path as an argument and writes a file? Hypothesis will attempt to write to every location on the hard drive.

Damn, I put my sales/downloads reporter program together cleverly.

I just created 1 new function, to view everything there is to know about 1 book. In there, I simply call 3 existing functions, and that's it.

e,g, $ ./verkopen view lord

Just a quick one today, since I was off most of the week, but nevertheless, I do need a few more subscribers each week if I'm going to keep doing this thing, so please share and enjoy:

I rewrote a Powershell script in Python for my teammates who use Macbooks.

Now I still love writing scripts in Python, but to say I've been spoiled by Powershell is a massive understatement.

What's the 2024 state of the art for local macOS+arm64 development nonsense?

Without spending TOO much time combing my (halfhearted because I've been developing via headless Linux since 2020 & it's actually very nice) notes, the last I recall hearing is:

  • Homebrew still "is what it is” & its entire world has since been updated for arm64?
  • Actual-Docker works now, but still via a (Virtualization.framework? emulating Intel??) Linux VM?
  • ISTR other non-Docker VM/container tools exist?
  • ???

Related to above #macOS question, tangents:

#Python env management. I’m told PDM is current state-of-the-art, Hatch also good, uv if you're not allergic to VC money, Poetry if you can stomach its bug surface, or the evergreen "just use pip-tools”.

Or use a polyglot tool like mise (fka rtx) or asdf (or haha-only-joking-unless, Determinate System's #Nix installer + flakes).

Also curious about #Rust on macOS arm64, even though that's getting ahead of myself.

I'm starting to think of sdists as an intermediate build between repo and wheel, rather than a partial representation of the repo. Sdists should only contain the code and metadata needed to create the wheel, not docs, dev requirements, examples, tests, and other tool config. All that extra stuff can be run by checking out the tag and using our standard contributor instructions. Removing that from sdists would probably save PyPI a good amount of bandwidth.
