Microsoft announces Python formulas in Excel... which have to get sent to the cloud (techcommunity.microsoft.com)

Since its inception, Microsoft Excel has changed how people organize, analyze, and visualize their data, providing a basis for decision-making for the flying billionaires heads up in the clouds who don't give a fuck for life offtheline

umami_wasbi,

This issue isn’t about authoring the script, is about why it needs to execute on the cloud rather locally.

umami_wasbi,

I don’t get it. Why I need cloud to run Python scripts which can be done locally? Installing Python isn’t hard and MS can bundle it as a library with Office either.

umami_wasbi,

I believe security threats can be mitigated locally without resorts to cloud.

Actually, one can argue using cloud is less secure because there is a risk of sensitive data leaked out of cooperate network.

umami_wasbi,

Yes. I read that. Thank you.

And thanks the person clarifying it.

umami_wasbi,

Idk then. I had a separate sync password which will not sync anything after logged on in Chrome until I gave that password.

umami_wasbi,

The compatibility issues arise only because Chrome/Chromium dominates the market, hence Google weld the power to define the web standards.

umami_wasbi,

At least what they claim to be back then.

umami_wasbi,

I wonder how they did it. The sync data is supposed to be protected by E2EE where the key is derived from the user password or an separate sync password, at least before I abandon Chrome and go FF few years ago.

umami_wasbi,

Where did I mention Linux? Oh yeah Chromium that Chrome is based on is open source too. Doesn’t that work for you?

New Anti-Consumer MacBook Pros - Teardown And Repair Assessment - Apple Silicon M1/M2

Proofed. Support a defective bill and create an anti-repair product.

umami_wasbi, (edited )

Isn’t the program that requires you to fill a form to order a serialized display and send the old one back? That’s still monopoly, just shift from service to sales. The essence remains the same.

umami_wasbi,

Or loose more. The devil is in the details.

umami_wasbi,

A repair bill supported by Apple most likely not a bill I want. It is hard to imagine Apple will loosen it’s tight grip.

umami_wasbi,

I agree. Security components, fine. Just let me skip over that.

However, what on earth they need to serialize the monitor and battery?!?! Calibration? How come I don’t need calibration for my PC monitor nor my camera batteries? Does it work to its fullest? No. Does it work. Yes. That all I want.

umami_wasbi,

Which is the type of repair bill I don’t want. I would like to just source a donor phone and transplant parts to make it work again, aka reducing wastes. (and protecting my bank acc)

However, with a big player like Apple support this defective bill, it got a high chance to pass and set the standard.

umami_wasbi,

Actually, I believe you just need to root out the networking and disk access then 90% of the attack surface vanished. At least it will not be persistant.

Apple security updates could be banned by British government (9to5mac.com)

Everyone in the tech industry facepalms almost every time legislators try to pontificate on technology, but the British government appears to be trying to set a new record. After putting iMessage and FaceTime at risk, the government is now suggesting that it might ban some Apple security updates.

umami_wasbi,

Or wait the service provider submit a fix, deny it, and then exploit. Even cheaper than find one cuz they just need to wait to be summitted.

umami_wasbi,

If using Python, why not just use JSON module? Simpler and easier maintain without all those regex.

Still +1, on sed if one is on Linux.

umami_wasbi,

Did thye define how to achive interoperability? They can make a ActivityPub clone to call it interoperable but no one else use it.

umami_wasbi,

A user from another community breaks it down nicely.

programming.dev/comment/2283862

It’s basically the existing crappy “authorized” repair they are doing rn.

umami_wasbi,

Daylio Journal?

Didn’t have detail read so you need to look carefully.

Edit: it got ads so maybe not so privacy oriented.

umami_wasbi,

And look on nomie.app for a list of options

umami_wasbi,

www.cryfs.org

In terms of security this would be second to Veracrypt but much more effieicent as changing one bit doesn’t require a full reupload. However, it is still quite experimental. Use with caution.

umami_wasbi,

But most of the time doesn’t cuz most humans greedy, more so on senior levels.

umami_wasbi,

Seriously. What are you going to use that will saturate 1Gbps let alone 5?
