Why are people surprised that cassettes are still made?

It should be obvious why they’re still around.

Cassettes are the cheapest form of music media out there. Anyone can buy one blank cassette and start recording. Equipment is cheap: all you need is a boombox.

If you want good analog recording, you can use them on a Tascam Portastudio 4-track machine—and it will sound great.

I went to a music store the other day and saw the same album on vinyl, CD, and cassette. Guess which one I bought?

It was the cassette. It was C$12—thus C$28 cheaper than the vinyl.

Here’s the kicker. If you have a good tape deck, and a quality recording, cassettes can sound better than vinyl. Even a type 1 cassette theoretically has better dynamic range than vinyl.

That's a real stretch! But I like your optimism

@atomicpoet Maybe in pristine lab-like conditions early in their life cycle a cassette tape would sound better than vinyl but cassette tapes seem to have more points of failure (thinner material, moving parts, spooling and unspooling). I'm happily a digital music person so not the best person to comment on physical formats really!

@atomicpoet @imabuddha I find it pretty interesting and I don't mean to be down on cassette aficionados.

I think the "Big 3" of the latter 20th century: vinyl, cassettes and CDs all have wonderful qualities but also entertaining (in hindsight) limitations.

My wife and I both filled out our ballots today, and then because we live in Oregon (which is a relatively sane state that has vote by mail and dropbox), I went to the nearby city hall to drop off our ballots, only to realize that there is an 8:00 p.m. cutoff and the box was locked.

When I got home, I had my first panic attack in years. This is the first election I haven't participated in since 1980, and I hadn't realized how much I rely emotionally on the perception of control that voting gives me in a world that's dying and falling apart.

Please, friends: protest and rebel and fight back any way you can. Burn everything down if you need to. But please, please, don't abstain from voting.

@msbellows Hopefully one of you or your wife are crazy loons and your unused votes would've cancelled each other out anyway :taps head:

@msbellows oh no! Perhaps hopefully one of you is at least anti-vax!

"Peacekeeper Command-O" (2018), a fun two player homebrew game running on my Odyssey emulator.

It's a bit like Missile Command (1980).

Only five physical copies of Peacekeeper were made but you can play it with Magnavody!

Two bright spots battle it out on a TV screen. One is heading towards four city sprites and one is defending them.

I played this with a friend yesterday and he gave real "older brother" energy by going straight on the attack yelling "good offense is best defense!"

My Amiga 500 friend was trash talking the ZX Spectrum scene for being too niche and I just nodded along politely

There was a band I liked when I was a kid. Was devastated when they broke up as it was the first time a living band I followed split

In hindsight they sang about middle class concerns eg war is bad, we don't need money, let's play hacky sack, etc

Anyway they reformed and every 6 years or so do a new album of varying quality

The 2024 album is really solid. BUT I'm listening to their middle age hippy vibe and I'm llke I can't tell if this is deeply philosophical or just anti-vax 😅😅😅

If I could remember names I would be unstoppable. What a skill!
