I’ve done so many years worth of manager training in California. One of the big things they drill into your head is you should always tell anybody to report things to HR or their manager, never “well did you first try to hash it out with the person harassing you?”

I was just happy to realize this afternoon that this is a different Linus than Linus Torvalds. I was very confused this morning how out of the loop I was to not realize The Linus had become a youtuber. Now this makes more sense (or at least I no longer care at all)

Star Trek executive producer wants more Strange New Worlds episodes, and I’m nervous (screenrant.com)

Strange New Worlds has been my favorite Trek since Next Generation, and if the quality continues, could easily be my favorite Trek ever. But with the e.p. wishing for more episodes per season, there’s a danger of diluting the show by adding weak episodes that would have never made it in a 10 episode season....

It took me far too long to understand what NG meant. Why would you do this I feel TNG is an incredibly standard abbreviation

Did you not read the article? Their whole point is chatgpt isn’t good at this type of writing because open ai intentionally trained it to do very non threatening corporate friendly speech. While code-davinci-002 (which predates gpt3.5/4) is objectively weaker this limitation wasn’t baked into it and it demonstrates LLMs can certainly write jokes and edgy humor.

I’m otherwise decently fluent in Danish (first learned nynorsk then lived in Denmark for a few years). But when numbers come out I immediately switch back to Norwegian. Fucking Danes.

Belize has basically the same weather and doesn’t suck horribly.

Over 13 years here, coming on 12 years without opioid withdrawals at all (methadone/suboxone withdrawal can be even worse and is certainly not a catch all solution but definitely worked for me). Great job Kava keep it up.

I lived there from 2010-2012 and it was more than enough to realize I would never do that again, esp with a funny foreign name, brown skin, and mixed race daughters. It’s sad too, thinking about e.g. Carl Hiaasen or Tim Dorsey, or time I’ve spent camping in the keys or swimming in fresh water springs in Central Florida. There’s clearly some real majestic environmental beauty and culture there but jesus christ has the state’s human culture gone absolutely to shit.

Don’t go looking into him pre 1996 or so, he definitely has a legitimate gangbanger past

It’s particularly popular in the sf bay area. Cheeseboard is probably the most famous but there’s a lot of really good places that specialize in it (Benchmark & Arizmendi both worth checking out too)

Fun fact, Travis afb was first confirmed US covid (I believe a cruise ship got brought in and the passengers shipped up the delta).

There’s also the UC Beniof Childrens Hospital

Looking for suggestions for a place to move in the US as a remote employee

So the work I do is 100% remote now. I moved to Southern California because of an industry that has in part moved to remote work. My only requirements are a temperate climate, nature access and hopefully a blue-ish state. Is there a place out there that makes sense financially? I’m hoping to buy a house less then 500k. I...

I’m from Kalamazoo. Lived in the sf bay now for the past 12+ years and many other places in between.

Winter is no joke, and drags on for a very long time. Diversity is much less than elsewhere I’ve lived (esp compared to the east bay), as a mixed race person my experience growing up was so much different than my kids’ experience in Berkeley. Kzoo is halfway between Chicago and Detroit so not horrible but any big name concerts or museum shows or whatever require a few hours of travel. Like another poster said, also car culture - nobody walks anywhere nor can you feasibly do so (not just because of winter but also due to the influence of Detroit) and outside of AA public transportation is non-existent. And the job market in general isn’t great (if you are working remote maybe it doesn’t matter, but at least in tech the salaries are significantly less even in Ann Arbor or Chicagoland area vs California, and the number of opportunities way fewer).

Is there anything actually useful or novel about "AI"?

Feel like we’ve got a lot of tech savvy people here seems like a good place to ask. Basically as a dumb guy that reads the news it seems like everyone that lost their mind (and savings) on crypto just pivoted to AI. In addition to that you’ve got all these people invested in AI companies running around with flashlights under...

There’s no obvious way to force it to care if it’s output is right or just right-looking, though

Putting some expert system in front of LLMs seems to be working pretty well. Basically modeling how a human agent would interact with it.

As a Michigander it’s funny to me that 4 major nationwide pizza chains are from Michigan (jets, hungry howies, little Caesars, and dominos), I don’t really think of Michigan pizza as particularly noteworthy.

Long time sf bay resident I think best east bay Detroit style is fat apples in Berkeley or El cerrito. (And since it keeps coming up in the comments, best east bay deep dish/chicago style is little star over Zachary’s, I live between the two off solano and stand firm in this decision)
