10 years ago today, my friend Paul Thorsen and I released GBA4iOS as seniors in high school. I'll never forget that day, or the many hours we spent together after school building it 💜

To celebrate, I’m excited to announce I’ve revived GBA4iOS for the new era of computing: meet GBA4vOS, the premier Game Boy Advance emulator for visionOS 🥽

Today’s grumpy old man opinion:
Search bars that aren’t actually search bars but buttons that take you to a new screen are bad.

Rewatching the original Star Wars trilogy and I'm going to say something extremely controversial

The Galactic Empire design aesthetic reminds me of Apple in that everything seems to have a purpose, clearly thought out, clean, sleek, etc.

The Resistance design aesthetic is very.. Android/Linux, wires hanging from walls, DIY, lots of buttons and thingamajigs…

idk what the deeper implications of this are if any, but I can honestly say The Galactic Empire has a good design eye

Interior of an imperial ship hallway. Large overhead rectangular lights, grey walls with various angles. Trapezoid style windows in the background.
Interior of the Millennium Falcon. ductwork and wires hanging, yellowish in color. R2-D2 standing by the chess couch.
Interior shot of the Millennium Falcon cockpit facing into the ship. Chewy, C3P0, Leia, and Han are front and center. Buttons and lights appear above them.

Keep that flame lit.

That sense of awe and wonder.

It’s important in seeing the vibrancy in this world, despite.

I wish more apps on iOS increased their prices, rather than go down the subscription model. I’d love to see $60 AAA games, and for example, desktop class apps on iPad Pro like FCP and Logic.

This is definitely “insane” but I figured I’d share

Sometimes I like to simulate rain for my house plants by putting them all in my bathtub and turning on the shower for a bit 🪴🚿

Studies have shown plants “feel” more than we had previously perceived, so I like to think they enjoy that “feeling” of being rained on

😬😅

US Govt banning TikTok is 100% about silencing American voices, especially the youth, under the guise of national security

If you spend like 15 minutes on TikTok, you see why they want to ban it, and it’s nothing to do with the CCP, but because they can’t control the narrative. The collective.

You think information moves fast on Twitter/Mastodon/Insta… TikTok is faster, deeper, and far more nuanced. People are waking up, on TikTok, and I’m not being hyperbolic.

I’m sure someone far smarter than me at Apple has looked into this, but why isn’t Vision Pro sold in multiple sizes similar to Apple Watch with 41mm and 45mm?

Absolutely no shade, because as humans we come in all different shapes and sizes, that’s what makes you, you. However, Vision Pro seems to look better and proportionally correct on bigger heads.

Perhaps that’s the smallest enclosure they can fit all of that technology into right now, but I’m curious if this was discussed at all

iJustine wearing Apple Vision Pro. A woman wearing a blue sweater, blonde hair, wearing Vision Pro. Proportionally, it looks too big on her face.

A couple months ago, I went to this VR experience and one of the walls was a timeline of stereoscopic, 3D, and VR devices and concepts through the ages

The earliest stereoscope was invented in the early 1830s. I find it fascinating how humans have been interested in 3D/depth imagery

Then, just recently I happened to stumble upon something in an antique store…

Focusing on the left side of the timeline wall of devices, we see at the top left the stereoscope made of wood with a paper insert.

Side by side to a modern sibling, the Apple Vision Pro

I find the curvature of the portion that you put up to your face to be fascinating

Inscribed into one side of the stereoscope is a patent date of June 14, 1881

Not particularly sure when this specific stereoscope was manufactured, but I’d guess anywhere between 1881 and the very early 1900s

Certainly this has become the oldest, and most fascinating, piece of technology I own 😎

Looking at the backside of each device side by side, both are strikingly similar in their curvature. The dual lenses for each eye are different, with Vision Pro being oval and the stereoscope being square
Etched into the hinge of the holding mechanism is a patent date of June 14, 1881

@whatthecj@mastodon.social avatar

Out of the corner of my eye, I spot a stereoscope! It’s slightly different from the one in the timeline wall, with a metal frame, but nonetheless I was intrigued

It was only $99 so I immediately scooped it up

I can’t help but say “click” like the good ol days.

@RobW click click click! Better not hold it against me 😂

I had an offer to work at an Apple Store in my college days, and I highly regret (like major life regret!) not taking it. It was just a little too far from my school

To think all of the marketing training that could have been instilled in me, alas I say “click”

I don't want a Rabbit R1, but seeing videos of it reinforces how much I want to write software for extremely tiny, handheld hardware. I think about it almost every day. Is the Playdate the only accessible platform that allows this today?
