I should finally have all the supplies i need to put together a minidexed module!

It's meant to be a Yamaha DX7 in a box, 8 polyphonic voices, based on the Raspberry Pi 1312. But if you have the cheaper RPI Zero-C (this revision stands for "Zero Cops"), you can still have one single voice, which is good enough for a modular.

However, they really expect you to build it to spec, and make no provisions for modular use, and a request for CV input was closed as "out of scope", so I will have to ruse.

@woof@aria.dog avatar

The docs only provide Fritzing wiring diagrams, so they are really difficult to follow (unless you are building exactly to spec). I have re-drawn them for my own use. It's a really simple project one you see a schematic instead of a wiring diagram.

Also, the recommended LCD is huge, so this has to be a 10cm wide module, unless I mount the LCD vertically.

So I'm thinking of using the wasted space to build a CV-to-MIDI circuit I can plug into the MiniDexed (and maybe, space allowing, a MIDI-to-CV circuit too). Basically a dual-use module.

@woof@aria.dog avatar

The way I expect to make it, I can really build it in two parts - the core and MIDI-IN circuit first, and CV<=>MIDI as a separate project

That means new footprints for Synth-Printer, let's hope the test print will also be the final one.

@woof@aria.dog avatar

New feature in Synth Printer, my FOSS system to create synth front panels with simple Python code: cradles for smaller panels!

:arevblobfoxbongohyper: @synthdiy :ablobfoxbongohyper:

Here, you can see a 5U 15cm Kosmo panel holding a 3U 12hp Eurorack panel, which in turn holds two 1U 10hp Intellijel blank tiles.

It's fully parametric and customizable: you could mount them horizontally, or instead of having unpowered mults in the leftover space, you could add some attenuators.

There are supports around the cradle for increased strength, so clearances might not work with professional modules that have huge PCBs, might need to edit the model a little before printing.

Printed rails hold modules very satisfactorily using M3x8mm screws, and the holes last a dozen screwing cycles before becoming too enlarged to hold things well. And of course, using longer screws and nuts is an option.

All the info on its Github page!

@_pear's fortune ✨

The Thurnage — Anger and violence turned inwards, a strong desire to break out. An omen of creative destruction and rebirth. What is the right price to pay to change?

The Tace—Judgement from high above. A detached outlook that sees patterns, but not details. She sees what we do not see. She doesn't see what we do. A broader look is necessary, in space as much as in time.

I posted an essay about Meta joining the Fediverse, here's a screencap:

I think it's actually a bug that even i can't see how many followers i have (i could see it when i first installed akkoma but it eventually broke). But it's so relaxing not think about it ever. Calling subscriptions "followers" (or worse, "friends") has done irreparable damage to our social infrastructure.

Nobody cared if you were subbed to the RSS feed when you commented on blogs.

KosmoPi complete! It's a EuroPi hacked to fit in the 5U format.

The EuroPi is an open design multi-functions module by Allen Synthesis, available as plans + Gerbers, or sold as complete kits: https://www.allensynthesis.co.uk/

If interested, all the details of my build are on my personal blog (and on my fedi insteance): https://cohost.org/AriaSalvatrice/post/1415871-euro-pi-complete

So first, a preface, I really don't wanna buy anything Raspberry Pi anymore after their social media manager, Liz Upton, went on that big spree of cop apologia, insulting their users online, and going to the press to dismiss the incident with weird culture war canards about organized harassment. (Context: https://www.techdirt.com/2022/12/12/raspberry-pi-shows-how-not-to-mastodon/ )

But I'm left with two RPI Zero and four RPI Pico to use for something. It can't be an original project, as I would not be able to share it without causing more RPI being sold.

So the plan is to build the Minidexed and Europi.

Also fuck cops.

And it’s alive!

While there is a detailed build guide, for the controls board, I mostly yolo’d it, to expose the bits I think I have to wire up to the faceplate. I mostly tried to follow the traces to figure out how things connect to each other. I have yet to confirm the inputs and outputs work, except for the buttons, which I verified to work.

woof,
@woof@aria.dog avatar

A weird issue gave me trouble: buttons became unresponsive. Turns out i traced the signal wrong. First time they worked by accident or something :blobcatdizzy:

woof,
@woof@aria.dog avatar

Now that I know all the I/O works, time for the faceplate.

This time, I will try out a new mounting technique.

(This mount was made in tinkercad, but reminder to only ever use it for throwaway one-offs, proofs of concept, and the like. Autodesk is a trash company with an horrific reputation. Never depend on their "free" offerings. The only thing that's certain is that they will change the rules on you and take your data hostage)

woof,
@woof@aria.dog avatar

I don't have matched 24mm arcade buttons, so for now, these colors will have to do.

Using hot glue always feels nasty but it's the best way to secure LEDs... Though they would probably stay in place without with all their grounds soldered in place like that.

image/jpeg

woof,
@woof@aria.dog avatar

All wired up!

My holder didn't work out so i will use adhesives, they've proven good enough for my previous builds

woof,
@woof@aria.dog avatar

And it's complete! This build went particularly well.

While this module might seem a bit menu divey for my tastes, it remembers its last state, so it's still "set and forget" enough for my purposes. And a multi function module is always a good system starter, filling in for features i lack, even if a dedicated module will always be preferable.

I still have the supplies to put a few more together—and probably will, eventually.

In conclusion, fuck cops.
