I'm working on a file manager!

And I thought I could document the development process here.

I've wanted to explore the idea of a non-hierarchical file manager for a long time and this is the result, Hyperplane.

The idea is that you organize files by tags (or categories or whatever name I end up with) instead of folders while still being able to access them from a traditional file manager.

You can test it now if you want, details in the README:

@kramo this seems like the kind of thing that @publicvoit probably has a take about, and might even support (based on his thoughts)

I just want an autocomplete select on my site that will play nice with React. So I choose react-select. Over 3300 NPM dependencies downloaded and I feel sick.

Would I recommend as daily driver? No. But I also won't stop living in it. https://orys.us/v6

One of the biggest life-savers on has been the command xrandr -s 0. This somehow refreshes things and causes my triple-monitors to wakeup in ways that -auto and -set do not. But I cannot find documentation on it ANYWHERE; I've checked the manpages, web search... nothing!

EDIT: just tried xrandr --help and saw that it is short for --size. I'm still not sure why it works such miracles, though...

What's this #pim @publicvoit talks about? A specialty of his: Personal Information Management. "Worthwhile" is basically what it's all about.

I spent an hour with the toddler and infant watching https://youtube.com/@msrachel. The 6-month old liked this, too. Definitely made me think of @DrFreemo

We borrowed some code from that had nested ternaries without parenthesis. Turns out that as a fatal error in PHP 8 on our production server but not on the earlier PHP on our development server. Wow... a language with breaking syntax changes. I'll stick with sound , where you never have too few parenthesis.

@amarok !!! What leads you to think it better than JS? (not a JS lover here, but historically I hate it less than old PHP)

Remember folks, Jesus cant enter your home if you dont invite him in. He also doesnt have a reflection if he looks in a mirror.

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@freemo is that Bram Stoker vampires, or Anne Rice, or ...?

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@freemo Well, Jesus, yes; but not the Dracula mirror thing, nor the clever demonology "invite in" crossover

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@freemo lol Is the "invite in" vampire mythos? I've been scouring the internet for leads and found some fascinating threads on demonology, but can't find an exact source for the "they have to be invited" concept

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@freemo 🤣 Mixing your mythos a little there. What inspired this joke?

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@freemo Ah! Vampirilogy! I didn't know that one

Shucks. Looks like mstdn.games has on their block list, too. That is annoying. I've requested that QOTO be unblocked. @freemo

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@freemo I could definitely be wrong. But I thought there was a week or so when he first left Musk's instance that he was actually on QOTO

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@freemo I might have my wires crossed, then

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@freemo and now I am good on the mstdn.games server, so I assume that all QOTO is unlocked!

One of the issues with the (and which is just a great big text-oriented repl) is that it is additive in nature; it usually takes major effort or a restart to REMOVE things once they've been added (thinking on plugins which modify app state).

Today I am reminded that the difference between lazy "a la" and correct "à la" is called a "grave accent," not the pinyin 4th tone. We are doing french-english, not chinese-latin characters! In that's "LATIN SMALL LETTER A GRAVE"

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@publicvoit Ah! Thanks for the tip! I realized I can do it in raw , without consulting the unicode table, with set-input-method Tex ` a For one-offs, though, the unicode table is simpler

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@publicvoit I use exwm, so it's all emacs with some Firefox, generally. Occasionally there's gimp or inkscape, but 95% of my work is in emacs and orgmode.

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@publicvoit understood. Except, emacs IS my OS...

At some point (I missed the memo) stopped espousing and invented . I'm guessing this was to step out of any annoying dependencies of datalog and dampen comparison with the other major datalog approaches in .

https://docs.xtdb.com/intro/what-is-xtql.html I especially enjoy the side-by-side Clojure/JSON comparisons here

Filling this out for a former employee -- what's the difference between "Fired" and "Laid off"?

worldsendless, to FunctionalProgramming
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

I'm looking for recent books or up-to-date text on #FunctionalProgramming with PHP. #PHP is changing rapidly and all the books I see are nearly a decade old. Any good recommendations? #FP

worldsendless,
@worldsendless@qoto.org avatar

@Crell I did look at yours, but Stack Overflow errors have taught me the hard way that PHP has changed a lot recently. Isn't much of PHP different since you wrote the book?
