Anyone in Germany or Austria (on the route between UK and Slovenia) up for hosting me + maybe other live coders for an gig/workshop around 27th July or 4th August? Looking for a stop-off on the way to https://pif.camp/ by train

Re-listening to this interview with B C Manjunath, fully taking in his answer to @xg's queston about whether konnakol could be formalised in code.. He basically says any computer sound can be formalised in konnakol but not vice-versa, because the body is a much more advanced system for thinking about sound than any computer.

I haven't used stackoverflow much, just had two answers I'd posted there. I deleted them both, and got the same email others have got.. Probably the most passive-aggressive email I've ever received.
By the way if you delete your account, they anonymise your posts. AFAICT, that's against the creative commons attribution share-alike license of the posts.

Next time someone calls themselves a 'futurist', maybe read the futurist manifesto they're alluding to..
"We will glorify war—the world’s only hygiene—militarism, patriotism, the destructive gesture of freedom-bringers, beautiful ideas worth dying for, and scorn for woman.
We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind, will fight moralism, feminism, every opportunistic or utilitarian cowardice."

Btw the techno-optimist manifesto quotes and references Marinetti who wrote both the futurist and fascist manifestos

"Future London" seem super dodgy, far-right andreessen-style techno-optimist/accelerationist bollocks.. and somehow hosting mainstream tech events. https://futurelondon.org/

If you're on an online community, please search "elephant in the room" and share what the elephants are.

Here's the ones from the future of coding slack:

  • DCI architecture (not sure what that is)
  • Haskell crypto
  • Code quality
  • Incoherence of ownership
  • No one in UK government listens to evidence
  • Functional reactive programming
  • IDEs
  • Browsers being crap at resizing in tiling window managers
  • The elephant being the room
  • Bret Victor

When I first started making algorithmic music with Ade Ward 24 years ago (as Slub), we decided to only make music with software we'd made ourselves. I've mostly stuck to that aim ever since, although after a couple of years we added a rule that we'd make a fundamental part of the software during performances to keep things interesting.
I'm starting to get a bit fed up with just doing that so now I'm thinking about adding an additional rule - only live code algorithmic music that I can run without a computer. My plan is to switch between live coding and manually performing algorithms. If I'm brave enough I'll try this out for my next gig..

I've been thinking about doing a bigger live coding event in Sheffield but it's difficult to get funding to pay artist fees and expenses, and it's not really possible to cover them from ticket sales. In the old days people often weren't paid to play but this excludes people who can't afford it.. But it was much easier to make events happen. How do people feel about this these days, both organisers and people travelling to perform (and of course those who do both)?

Please stop writing down music.
"In all Indian musical traditions, learning, rationalization and sharing are part of an internal process within and between artists. The magnificence of this non-scribal technique is the acceptance of diversity and the possibility of continuous musical change. The internalization of structure and form in the art, the role of memory and rediscovering without written reference keeps the music moving and varied. Every voice is not identical; the possibility of music bending and swaying across regions, traditions and time is real. At no point is the music etched in stone, trapped in time, a stone tablet of commandments"

Looking for ideas for places to stay in the South of France early July.. We're taking the train to Lyon, then hiring a car to Gorges du Tarn to camp there for a couple of days, then ...? We'll spend some good time in the alps on the way back but would like to visit somewhere nice and not too by the seas as well.. Maybe the Calanques but seems it gets super busy and often closes in hot weather.

The problem with sharing your stuff free/open source, is that it only takes one entitled person to destroy any motivation or joy you have for it. They're super rare but they do come along from time to time.

My son wants to make his own electric guitar as a long term project. I think this might be too big a project to jump into. He's not even particularly keen on the idea of starting with a kit.. Any passing luthiers have advice about an easier step into this world?

What are some nice tracks that have everything hard panned either left or right? Particularly tracks beyond the early stereo era when crazy panning was the default. Orbital's input out is one example but there must be more examples.. People should do this more

Idea: a crowdfunding platform for people who don't need any money at the moment. People can sign up to donate small amounts to people who share stuff for free, but only in the months when they need it. They might never need it, but it could make life decisions with less precarity.
I closed my fairly healthy ko-fi when I got my fellowship funding but it would have been nice to have just paused it for 7 years. You can pause patreon things but (because they take a huge cut) they won't let you pause for more than a month.

I've managed to get paid to develop free/open source software for 15 years or so now.. Via research student scholarship, university/institutional research grants, a non-profit-hosted research grant, arts funding, crowd funding, pay-as-you-feel tutorial videos, talks, running workshops on the software, and getting paid to use the software I make (music performances).

It's not always well paid and I've been really lucky at times, but it is possible. I've rarely felt exploited, I am really thankful for being able to have such a meaningful approach to work.

It's really sad to see people who do find themselves getting exploited for openly sharing of their volunteer work. It's also sad to see some people still treat free/open source software as a joke. I think it's generally just a much nicer world than locked-down propitiatory systems though, especially in terms of being able to hold on to OG emancipatory dreams of real personal/communal computing, but also (for me) in current reality.
