6 thought provoking questions posed to @awaisaftab (psychiatrist) and myself (brain researcher) and we hit on so much:

The challenge of escaping reductionism. Theories of consciousness. Are mental disorders brain disorders? Why should anyone care about philosophy? Is epistemic iteration is failing? And what bits of brain research are awaiting their Copernican moment?

With nods to @summerfieldlab, @knutson_brain, @tyrell_turing, @Neurograce, @eikofried and so many more.

Read it all here (and let's discuss)!

@tyrell_turing

Cognition is not computation. It is an elaboration of organismic agency, which is not of an algorithmic nature. There is nothing magical about that.

You're fundamentally misinterpreting Turing's theory of computation, which was always about the human act of computing, not about the brain or the world. Turing would turn in his grave if he would hear you.

Longer paper coming soon!

Interesting paper. But it's a computational model, so not really self-manufacturing & capable of open-ended evolution...

Then again, I am definitely aspiring to degrading gracefully, rather than catastrophically! That's a rather poetic abstract for an engineering paper ;-)

Next time, just be honest: tell me my work is outside your scope,
@eLife. Don't trump up any bullshit charges of lack of originality or merit. Just admit you're out of your depth. What you've done lacks intellectual integrity & epistemic humility. It's crap.

I certainly won't submit to
@eLife again.

Another experience I had with them was that they commissioned me to write a philosophical essay, which was then rejected by some bonehead on the editorial board for being "too philosophical." I can't take you clowns serious anymore...

What science needs right now is an honest look in the mirror. We need tons more mere verbal philosophy and less big quantitative data sets that tell us nothing about the big questions of life. We have all the knowledge we need. What we lack is wisdom.

Here's @parismarx with an excellent article on LeGuin's warning that producing commodities is not the same as creating art. AI only manages the former and will help the corporatocracy to close us off from a better future for humanity. Read it!

I know there is too much talk about at the moment.

But I've written a blog post, anyway, because I
think I have something to add.

and as a religious cult, with a neo-feudalist political program: http://www.johannesjaeger.eu/blog/machine-metaphysics-and-the-cult-of-techno-transcendentalism

post:

I was trained as a systems biologist, running an empirical research group working on the evolution of gene regulatory networks in Barcelona up until 2015.

I then turned to more philosophical questions, especially the role of organismic agency in evolution, and its relation to "artificial intelligence," which should instead be called "algorithmic mimicry."

Today, I'm trying to build a new metamodern science for the coming post-abundance age.
