Whatever happened to linking to actual source content?

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

Spotify Connect

Unless I’m reading this wrong, is this just Spotify’s solution for listening with friends? If so, that’s far from a Spotify exclusive feature.

Edit: Okay. So it’s their version of Airplay. It’s too bad Apple never opened it up. Streaming to remote devices has works for almost 20 years now in the Apple ecosystem.

The nice thing about Tidal is the attention to detail about the music or album you’re listening to. You get writers, producers and recording musicians for all the tracks. Sometimes additional Artwork.

Apple had the right idea all those years ago when they were selling those enhanced digital albums. Almost felt like purchasing a vinyl or cd and getting all the goodies that come with it. INCLUDING properly crediting the artists. Not sure they do that very well anymore.

What happened to glibc-widevine ? (aur.archlinux.org)

I watch the F1 on NowTV. In windows this works fine in Firefox but not in Linux. My research turned up various posts linking to the “widevine” package that depends on “glibc-widevine” but that seems to have disappeared. What happened to it? did it work? where can I get it? is there an alternative?

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

Paramount+ won’t play on Linux and Netflix plays at a lower bitrate.

DRM video on Linux will vary service to service. This is because each service sets their own rules for DRM using widevine. One service may require different levels of security than others. Resulting in different results depending on this service.

Unfortunately Linux is not a priority for these services and you’re likely out of luck.

You sure you couldn’t just use your package manager to install xone? I feel like what you just did would only allow it to work temporarily and unmanageable. As far as it being “part” of the solution, that doesn’t seem correct. “xone” kernel driver is the solution and has been for long time.

Edit: My mistake, I see there’s not a package for fedora. The instructions are pretty clear when using the git repo for installation.

 1. Unplug your Xbox devices.
 2. Clone the repository:

git clone https://github.com/medusalix/xone

 1. Install xone:

cd xone
sudo ./install.sh

NOTE: You can use the –release flag to disable debug logging.

 1. Download the firmware for the wireless dongle:

sudo xone-get-firmware.sh

NOTE: The –skip-disclaimer flag might be useful for scripting purposes.

 1. Plug in your Xbox devices.

Pelosi Wants FBI to Investigate Pro-Palestine Protesters for Financial Ties to Russia (www.rollingstone.com)

Protesters disrupted Pelosi’s appearance in Seattle on Thursday to call for an end to Israel‘s assault on Palestine. Vocal demonstrators have also been appearing regularly at President Joe Biden’s events. Pelosi said that she would like the FBI to investigate whether Russia is financing these groups....

5 years ago Valve released Proton? 5 years I’ve watch people build clients, hack and provide workarounds for Discord. All in the hope to get to work properly on Linux. Never quite getting there and never with the help of Discord. Discord does not care about the Linux community.

Then I see open source projects put support, documentation and their communities behind Discord.

I get that for some people, that’s where their friends are. But I can’t help but think how many cycles have been burned on this effort.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

Didn’t this happen with Facebook a while back? Non tech savvy folks started adding meaningless disclaimers to their comments/posts? I’m having a hard time remembering the specifics.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

It most likely is.

I highly doubt phones are always listening. Surely at some point by now there would be proof.

There’s no evidence of extra network activity ( your data would be through the roof ).

There’s no evidence of battery drain.

This is of course the phone OS we are talking about. Software like TikTok or Meta could / be when allowed to by the user.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

but they already are

Not in the context of this post thread.

“ Always listening ” would suggest they are recording at all times in a way that can be used for advertising.

It’s already well understood wake words are processed on device.

zelifcam, (edited )
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

But you see you’re wrong. We know how on device wake words work. I’m sorry, your vice article from 2018 is out of date.

Edit: I think I get it. You don’t know the difference between someone saying a microphone is always on (hot) for processing a wake word vs saying the microphone is always on (hot) for data collection. It’s two very different concepts. We know how wake words are processed. It’s done on chip in the device. Nothing is being sent across the internet.

We also have monitored cell phones when using wake words. There’s no network connectivity happening during that processing time. It’s easy to check.

Of course that doesn’t mean it will never happen in the future or that devices haven’t already been made to do so. We do know consumer cell phones do not appear to be doing this. Again, it would be obvious with suspicious battery drain and network activity.

@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

Is one a monitor and the other a TV by chance?

Do you get the same behavior when using display port?

tailscale.com/blog/docker-tailscale-guide

I used the above link to start on my project. I’m trying to add Tailscale service to my existing docker-compose files to forward all traffic on the primary container to an exit node. It works, but I’m not able to find a way to access the web apps on those containers that are forwarding their traffic. Looks like you are well beyond this guide.

Best of luck.

“Games you’ve bought from the Epic Games Store are first-class citizens, too”

The only reason you can play some games from EPIC is because of Valve with their proton and the free labor of Linux users. That quote doesn’t make any sense. Vote with your dollar and avoid their store if you want Linux gaming to improve.

Valve didn’t exactly make it difficult to run additional software to accomplish this. Extra steps for sure, but far from being restricted.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

because Valve contributed to proton they should now have a monopoly over linux handheld gaming OSs and every other platform should just accept that

It makes perfect sense the “Steam”Deck running “Steam”OS to only support the “Steam” Store.

EPIC Games does not support the Linux Desktop. Their biggest game does not work on Linux. Are we clear on that? I simply made a point that because of the work of VALVE and free time of Linux users, is the ONLY REASON you can kinda play EPIC titles today.

VALVE cannot ship a device with software they can’t support. You think VALVE can ship a million devices and somehow support a store that they can’t control and is historically anti-Linux? So then what? People start complaining to VALVE when they realize their Fortnite doesn’t work?? That can’t work as a business model.

I do not understand how so many people are disputing this.

Again, VALVE can only sell what they can support. You are completely free to install those third party solutions or heck, they even provide WINDOW Drivers if you want to install windows on it. Are you not aware these other stores people are using on Linux are essentially hacks with no support from the actual company that owns them?

I’m afraid you seem to be missing a bit of the picture and speaking from emotion instead of looking at the facts and thinking about how business works.

I’m grateful for what valve has done for linux gaming but I still support Playtron entering the linux market and trying to push linux gaming forward in their own way.

That’s great. I’m sure if it really is Linux based, then they will create a nice launcher that launches the launcher that someone else wrote in their free time that launches the launcher made by EPIC. Again, a welcome addition to the choices people have. It still baffles me how they can claim to treat other store as “first” class citizens when they have no ability to control those stores. Anyway…

I think most people would love to see another Linux OS out there with easy navigation for gaming. Especially since the work they do can be pulled into other projects. It’s all just Linux after all. Even my personal desktop has the ability to choose an alternate gaming based session at the login screen i cobbled together that’s focused on gaming. It’s a win for everyone and I don’t see people against that.

We ALL would LOVE for Linux to have native support for these alternate stores. You get that right? But you can’t demand a company to ship a solution they can’t control and expect to support it.

@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

I was referring to the social media platforms like Meta and TikTok. But you know this, you just want to be an asshat.

So you don’t agree with me? You think making sarcastic comments is the path forward? You seriously take time out of your day to start shit with a stranger on the internet who simply suggests we have the ability to try to change things for the better in this country?

Well I don’t have the time. Take care buddy.

zelifcam, (edited )
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

I agree. That’s ALWAYS been what feels to me to be the correct path forward. But that’s not what’s happening, is it? So we would have to get our politicians to a place to make something like that happen.

I too can oppose the processes and have an additional thought. Why do people insist on making everything so black and white?

I totally agree with the start of this thread. I simply a stated it’s not the worse thing in the world for our government to start looking at where our data is going. Would I love to have the correct, best solution put into place? Sure. Does that ever happen in politics? Rarely? So fuck me for having a discussion huh.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

Agree. I never said it was the correct first move. I meant it as more of “well here were are”. So first they have their eyes on where the data is going, maybe next we can work on the domestic data problem.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

I do apologize for the edits. Was trying to wrap this up in the short time I have. Didn’t complete my thought.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

How was I supposed to know you didn’t actually mean all spying?

Sure bud. Take care.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

It’s fine if you don’t like my tone. I don’t have any issue with that.

What I have a problem with is someone being an ass then playing the innocent game like you have.

Are you going to keep deflecting the conversation and asking me about my feelings or add to the actual discussion?

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

What’s crazy is you assume I am married to what happened with this bill. Then you throw in some other stuff about this being the start of the great American firewall. You have any more stuff to pile on?

I’m SIMPLY saying we need to do some work domestically with our elected officials to get things where we want it.

But please, carry on with the thing you’re doing. Maybe those internet points can be cashed in for solutions.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but the thread is talking about picking the default browser on Android. Which is unrelated to this post. iOS users can set the default browser… The user simply commented that they have been able to do that for a long time.
