steam-presence: A script that takes the game you're playing on steam and displays it on discord (github.com)

I just found this cool utility a couple days ago and have found that it’s a great solution to sandboxed versions of Discord being unable to provide rich presence. It’s a Python script that queries the Steam web API to get info to forward to Discord’s API. The “installer” sets up a systemd service that will auto-run the...

Can we chill out on the constant Discord news?

They don’t care about you. The amount of time this community has spent on Discord workarounds is madness.

Didn’t they do that already? I thought Microsoft offered low end Xbox with a subscription when they first launched gamepass?

But I also understand the people who can’t bring themselves to vote for a guy supporting a genocide

If people have this view, then they should be even more concerned about a Trump second term. I’m sorry, this is unacceptable and it’s exhausting seeing it repeated on this platform. It shows a clear lack of understanding on how we’ve made progress in this country and a concerning misuse of emotion over critical thinking.

Modern governance has always been an uphill battle. Don’t throw away progress, as little as it may be. It’s still progress and gaining an inch every day is almost always better than going back a foot. It may take years to get that inch.

If we want change, start local and work up. Campaign for the people who see the world the way you do and fight for them. Organize. Not voting is by far one of the dumbest and most un-American thing you can do.

Whatever happened to linking to actual source content?

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

The nice thing about Tidal is the attention to detail about the music or album you’re listening to. You get writers, producers and recording musicians for all the tracks. Sometimes additional Artwork.

Apple had the right idea all those years ago when they were selling those enhanced digital albums. Almost felt like purchasing a vinyl or cd and getting all the goodies that come with it. INCLUDING properly crediting the artists. Not sure they do that very well anymore.

What happened to glibc-widevine ? (aur.archlinux.org)

I watch the F1 on NowTV. In windows this works fine in Firefox but not in Linux. My research turned up various posts linking to the “widevine” package that depends on “glibc-widevine” but that seems to have disappeared. What happened to it? did it work? where can I get it? is there an alternative?

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

Paramount+ won’t play on Linux and Netflix plays at a lower bitrate.

DRM video on Linux will vary service to service. This is because each service sets their own rules for DRM using widevine. One service may require different levels of security than others. Resulting in different results depending on this service.

Unfortunately Linux is not a priority for these services and you’re likely out of luck.

How about let’s take care of the foreign power with a direct line to influence and collect from US citizens first. Then let’s work locally on the domestic problem. Protest, vote locally for those politicians who are on the same page and in the meantime STOP USING these companies products.

I simply don’t agree that kind of power is more acceptable in the hands of a country like China.

Edit: I don’t feel this comment captures my thought properly. I really didn’t mean for it to come off as this was the correct first move. More like here we are and we have the public more aware about our data and where it can go outside the US. Great, it’s been a battle to even get the slightest awareness on this problem. Okay, well now let’s use this momentum to properly fix the problem.

This bill is terrible. We should set up laws protecting data in general. Not go after specific companies.

And I’m tired of this constant talk about how much of an enemy the US government is to their people. While I could recite a billion reasons to agree with that that statement, I feel it’s a bit of an overused excuse instead of providing any kind of meaningful solutions. It’s completely possible to both be grateful for all the work people have done to make this country great and the sacrifices they made AND to criticize it and speak out about doing better.

The amount of assuming going on from a couple sentences is tiring. It’s just impossible to cover EVERY little detail.

zelifcam,
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

What’s crazy is you assume I am married to what happened with this bill. Then you throw in some other stuff about this being the start of the great American firewall. You have any more stuff to pile on?

I’m SIMPLY saying we need to do some work domestically with our elected officials to get things where we want it.

But please, carry on with the thing you’re doing. Maybe those internet points can be cashed in for solutions.

@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

I agree. That’s ALWAYS been what feels to me to be the correct path forward. But that’s not what’s happening, is it? So we would have to get our politicians to a place to make something like that happen.

I too can oppose the processes and have an additional thought. Why do people insist on making everything so black and white?

I totally agree with the start of this thread. I simply a stated it’s not the worse thing in the world for our government to start looking at where our data is going. Would I love to have the correct, best solution put into place? Sure. Does that ever happen in politics? Rarely? So fuck me for having a discussion huh.

I was referring to the social media platforms like Meta and TikTok. But you know this, you just want to be an asshat.

So you don’t agree with me? You think making sarcastic comments is the path forward? You seriously take time out of your day to start shit with a stranger on the internet who simply suggests we have the ability to try to change things for the better in this country?

Well I don’t have the time. Take care buddy.

It would be great if someone created a fediverse browser native app. Log into all the platforms and add a translation layer to create a truly unique experience. Maybe it would only make sense if you could authenticate one account on all the activitypub platforms? I understand the amount of technical hurdles and maintenance to do so. I suppose I find the thought of experiencing them combined intriguing. If someone created A single app experience, in a intuitive way, I’d definitely give it a try. I can see lemmy posts on mastidon. Would be kind of cool if it could handle that and display those posts using a lemmy ui. But making it seamless.

I’ve noticed over the years a LOT of Linux users do no have their system sensors / CPUs setup properly. Mostly missing fan information, missing / incorrect sensors and most importantly improper AMD CPU PSTATE and governors. For example, the past few years I’ve had to ensure I had correct kernel drivers and boot kernels parameters for my AMD 5950x to properly use the correct governor and idle at 500mhz and for correct sensor information and control for my viii dark hero MB.

You cant under volt with Linux / NVIDIA But you can lower the power total power usage and maybe squeeze out some performance at lower temps that way.

Personally, I use gamemode ( github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode/releases ) every time I launch a game. Leveraging the pre/post scripts section to optimize my desktop for gaming. In that pre script I “tune” my GPU using some commands found here.

Reddit is going to remove mods of private communities unless they reopen — ‘This is a courtesy notice to let you know that you will lose moderator status in the community by end of week.’ (www.theverge.com)

Reddit has informed moderators of communities that are still private in protest that they will lose their mod status by the end of the week. Thousands of communities went dark earlier this month to push back on the company’s planned API pricing changes.

Hey OP! Food In == Food Out

There’s no way around it.

The internet is great again, thanks to all of you 🙂

I'm 32, I remember using the internet before google was a thing, discovering flashy websites, hanging out on all kinds of internet forums and chatrooms, ebaums world, MySpace, new grounds... I rember when YouTube was just starting off and it was exploding with all kinds of content....

zelifcam, (edited )
@zelifcam@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a pretty good timeline. However, as someone born in the very early 80s, I have a couple thoughts.

For one, “before Google was a thing” comment. It was popular very quickly and was not the first search engine. So I’m not sure what kind of context a 8 year old ( based on your age ) would have on the internet before Google. I remember before Google. I remember AOL v1.x , prodigy, the first web browser and using local dial up BBS’ hosted by the local news papers. Certainly doesn’t go back as far as some people, but I had a very clear before Google understanding.

Another would be Facebook. It used to require a college email. It was incredible. A space only for college kids. I’d argue Facebook died for a lot of us by 2005-6. Whenever open registration occurred. I liked MySpace because it was like a interactive profile page and nothing more. There wasn’t a whole lot of pressure. It was a way to let someone find you. Kind of like handing out a digital business card.

Anyway that stuff doesn’t matter. What matters is it was pretty clear and mostly agreed that the internet works best when we use open protocols and not hide community generated content behind login screens and apps. We agreed to continue to participate in adding to the global knowledge as long as everyone played nice and allowed the content we put in for free, can be indexed, RSS’d, shared and scraped. This way anyone can find it and benefit from it.

I have news for you all. It’s probably going to all get a lot worse far before it ever gets better. Discord’s rise in popularity is one. FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY! KIDS! PLEASE STOP USING DISCORD AS A PLACE FOR DOCUMENTATION AND SUPPORT ON PROJECTS. This isn’t some kind of problem that needed a discord as the solution. I don’t care if you want to use it for chatting and discussions and gaming ( matrix is a thing btw), but leave the documentation and technical stuff in a git repo where it belongs. There are no words available to describe the feelings I felt when I found out that privacy nightmare of a site started gaining popularity. I know all your friends use it and I know it’s probably impossible for you to get away from it, but discord is the PERFECT example of a wrong turn down the wrong path. All I ask is stop making me use it to find information on your open source projects.

Bringing this full circle. Federated apps feel like the logical next steps. I think this path is the correct one.

Speaking of back in the day… Bonus points to anyone that recognizes the origin of my handle/avatar.
