Today in hilarity has started opening the keyboard for saving replays under the actual game itself. Which means you can't see it. Makes it a bit tricky to actually use. Also seems to block keyboard input which means you can't just "AAA[enter]" to get out of it. Just A+ work.

Enjoying™ running Steam Big Picture on Windows. Best bit is when it forgets the controller exists (often immediately after I've been playing a game WITH THE CONTROLLER) and I have to find the keyboard and mouse to click things.

No, tell a lie, best bit is when it randomly task-switches mid-game back to Big Picture. Really helpful in, say, Rocket League.

If I could get the games I play on a console, I'd dump this godforsaken mess in the bin.

Anyone got any great suggestions on how to identify where my old partitions where on this disk? testdisk has failed to identify any and that seems to be the suggested solution. Or something that can identify the start of ext4 filesystems would work? Otherwise it’s file recovery and crying…

Watching YouTube videos to get some tips on how to do better soldering and I cannot get past the ludicrousness of the way Americans say "SODDER".

I bet they go on confidence courses to get BODDER. And put the heating on when the weather gets CODDER. Then filing the heating bills in their FODDER which they hang in their file HODDER.

STUPID.

Just made send out a critical alert to my phone if the freezer gets too warm .. with the audio of "I'm melting" from The Wizard Of Oz.

I cannot stop laughing at how funny it is for my phone to be that dramatic.

“I was bullish on lobste.rs because I thought that it could form a real alternative to HN – but as it turns out, it’s just the very worst of HN without any of its redeeming qualities.”

OUCH.

(I disagree mildly on the grounds that lobsters has gate-kept membership which does keep most of the insane riffraff doing drive-by commentary out. It still has some spectacularly toxic comment threads and commenters though.)

I have somehow ended up in a job where the (new) team I'm on has dropped scrum and sprints in favour of kanban. Good grief, I may actually enjoy the upcoming months of work!

AND someone just suggested not paying an external vendor for a simple service but instead implementing it in-house. I feel like I've won a lottery.

(obviously they're still doing standups because heaven knows you can't trust your developers without a daily inspection by micro-management.)

Do I want to buy a HDMI Audio Extractor that contains a witch?

"The Bricklayer" has one of those "just incredibly bad at their job, swerves their assigned partnet, gets people killed, mid-life crisis starter kit, inexplicably attractive to people" heroes that is just tedious to watch.

Today I am trying to work out which books I read on the Kindle in 2023 by looking at the timestamps of the cover images in its application data directory. Because this is pretty much the only damn way you can find out (other than keeping a manual log which I eventually started doing from about April.)

(Don’t even think you can get this info from the device itself either.)

If there's intra-team discussions or people giving a 5 minute explanation of something in your standups, I would suggest you're doing standups wrong.

Anything more than 1 minute of "I did this, I'm doing that, I'm going to do the other, blocking is the rest" surface level information is a) a waste of everyone else's time and b) indicative that your internal communications must be useless if standup is the only time people get to talk about things.

You’ll never guess who broke 5 of his bots by putting ... 2>&1 | tee $HOME/bin/logify >> logs/xyz in his crontab.

I have not yet determined the precise mechanism of breakage but the evidence is damning - everything with that rogue tee broke on the same day and they’ve all started working again now I’ve removed it.

Most peculiar. I can’t even immediately see why it would break the shell script rather than just write the output to that file and also the log.

Guess they've made enough from the last 5, eh. That and they probably realise that last year's negative reaction would be much bigger this year.

Still, at least that reduces the number of abominations by one.

Decided to make my own "bird identifier" app for this bit of London.

Mainly just a static HTML page with "European Robin" in the centre and some Javascript to randomly add "Magpie", "Red-ringed Parakeet" and "Carrion Crow" once a week.

Super glad I invested in fancy audio recording equipment to get the same handful of birds.

I am watching “Hercules (2014)” and all I can think is “this would be orders of magnitude more interesting if it was Nicolas Cage instead of Dwayne ‘Paper Bag’ Johnson playing the lead role.”

(The conceit is that he isn’t a one-man army but actually gets by with the help of his friends and it would be much funnier if he was a normal sized skinny dude and his friends did all the hard work through his tactics and planning and stuff.)

(Gotta say though that Sewell and McShane are putting in excellent performances as sarcastic Englishmen.)

Today we learn about 's type annotations on function calls.

e.g. collect::>() which is nice and handy.

(Although I'd have thought the type system should be able to infer what it is by the fact I'm doing map(|x| format!("blah blah", x) which is essentially generating a Vec<String>.)

Anyone got a recommendation for a decent (cheap) home ? Just had another brief power outage (two in a month!) which knocked out a couple of machines and upset the RAID box again.

Probably only needs about 10 minutes of 400W but helpful if it has USB / whatever to let the little box power itself and the RAID down safely if power is gone for a while. Also 3-4 plug sockets, not IEC connectors.

The twiddly knob obscures the bottom 4 modes. Should be less deep and also have some knurling / ridges.
