Enjoying™ running Steam Big Picture on Windows. Best bit is when it forgets the controller exists (often immediately after I've been playing a game WITH THE CONTROLLER) and I have to find the keyboard and mouse to click things.

No, tell a lie, best bit is when it randomly task-switches mid-game back to Big Picture. Really helpful in, say, Rocket League.

If I could get the games I play on a console, I'd dump this godforsaken mess in the bin.

@john_fisherman It’s a great idea! I suspect Windows is the cause of the brokenness but since it runs on Windows…

Anyone got any great suggestions on how to identify where my old partitions where on this disk? testdisk has failed to identify any and that seems to be the suggested solution. Or something that can identify the start of ext4 filesystems would work? Otherwise it’s file recovery and crying…

@purplepadma There's a species of frog in Australia called the Banjo Frog - also known as the Pobblebonk Frog - and their call sounds a bit like twanging a thick rubber band.

Watching YouTube videos to get some tips on how to do better soldering and I cannot get past the ludicrousness of the way Americans say "SODDER".

I bet they go on confidence courses to get BODDER. And put the heating on when the weather gets CODDER. Then filing the heating bills in their FODDER which they hang in their file HODDER.

STUPID.

Just made send out a critical alert to my phone if the freezer gets too warm .. with the audio of "I'm melting" from The Wizard Of Oz.

I cannot stop laughing at how funny it is for my phone to be that dramatic.

A webcam, a webcam, my kingdom for a webcam.

Well, a weather-proof, 60fps, 1920x1080, good quality, PTZ IP webcam (optionally with IR but the birds generally come in daylight.) Wired is acceptable but Wifi5/6 would be much more convenient but RTSP/ONVIF are essential.

It seems no-one does a 60fps model anywhere I can find and even 30fps seems rare. Also I do not want to pay ££s.

OUCH.

(I disagree mildly on the grounds that lobsters has gate-kept membership which does keep most of the insane riffraff doing drive-by commentary out. It still has some spectacularly toxic comment threads and commenters though.)

I have somehow ended up in a job where the (new) team I'm on has dropped scrum and sprints in favour of kanban. Good grief, I may actually enjoy the upcoming months of work!

AND someone just suggested not paying an external vendor for a simple service but instead implementing it in-house. I feel like I've won a lottery.

(obviously they're still doing standups because heaven knows you can't trust your developers without a daily inspection by micro-management.)

Fiddling around with throwing virtual cards into a heap with mostly unsatisfactory results. Looking for inspiration from @zimpenfish

zimpenfish,
@zimpenfish@social.rjp.is avatar

@CTD What kind of output / layout / effect are you after? The chunks of white space do look a bit “empty” and probably want to minimise those (even if that’s what you’d maybe get with an organic drop / throw of real cards.)

zimpenfish,
@zimpenfish@social.rjp.is avatar

@CTD You'd have a bottom layer of 40-50% of the cards, then another layer for 20-30%, maybe another 10-20% layer, and then a final top layer of what's left. If you were after a pyramid kind of layout, then you'd generate the dots in smaller chunks around the centre for each layer upwards.

Does anyone have self-hosted open-source photo gallery software they like? I am trying to load all of ImageNet (~14M images) for viewing.

PhotoPrism is okay, but it tries to run some kind of inference on each image, so it's slow and it maintains a large cache.

zimpenfish,
@zimpenfish@social.rjp.is avatar

@alex gogallery might be worth a look? https://github.com/robrotheram/gogallery

@alex Ah, I forgot about that, should have mentioned it. make build worked for me. I'll see if I can fix up the make issues at some point and send them a PR.

    @jpmens Had the same problem with Hugo’s livereload websocket. Solved it by creating a cookie after the first successful login and using that as an alternate authentication method. Not ideal at all but the only way I could find to avoid this with Safari.

    This is my nginx configuration.

    map $cookie_thingauth $mysite_hascookie {
      "COOKIE_VALUE" "off";
      default "auth/realm";
    }
    ...
    location /xyz/ {
      auth_basic $mysite_hascookie;
      auth_basic_user_file "/pw/file";
      add_header Set-Cookie "thingauth=COOKIE_VALUE;max-age=86400;path=/;secure";
      ...
    }

    thingauth and COOKIE_VALUE have to match between the two blocks.

    Hopefully that helps and if there’s a better solution, I’d love to know myself.

    zimpenfish,
    @zimpenfish@social.rjp.is avatar

    @jpmens Yeah, auth/realm should probably match the other locations.

    I can definitely see my cookie from my site in the Safari devtools under Storage/Cookies. No idea why it wouldn’t show up other than maybe there’s a filter applied? Although it disappears if I hit the refresh icon, weirdly, but comes back if I access the page again.

    "The Bricklayer" has one of those "just incredibly bad at their job, swerves their assigned partnet, gets people killed, mid-life crisis starter kit, inexplicably attractive to people" heroes that is just tedious to watch.

    Today I am trying to work out which books I read on the Kindle in 2023 by looking at the timestamps of the cover images in its application data directory. Because this is pretty much the only damn way you can find out (other than keeping a manual log which I eventually started doing from about April.)

    (Don’t even think you can get this info from the device itself either.)

    zimpenfish,
    @zimpenfish@social.rjp.is avatar

    @cdamian Still effectively manual for Kindle Unlimited reads, I think, which have been the majority this year. Because why would you want to keep track of those? Stupid nonsense.
