I've been looking for the GitHub page for kbin.social but I'm still new with the fediverse, is this the correct place? https://github.com/ernestwisniewski/kbin...
I'm keen to see how this pans out at the start of July when the API changes come into play. I'll most likely end up purging my accounts old comments and then deleting it, I'm not leaving anything behind that they can leverage.
If they really thought their userbase were a parasite on their resources, wait until I'm browsing their content without posting, engaging in comments or upvoting. Not really much you can do except migrate away and eventually reduce your interactions
Huffman said in an interview that he plans to institute rules changes that would allow Reddit users to vote out moderators who have overseen the protest, comparing them to a “landed gentry.”
A majority of these subreddits, at least the big ones were polled regarding their involvement. Either through an actual poll or upvote / comment support.
If people didn't want their subreddit to be involved they could of commented / downvoted if they wanted to be heard.
This stinks of lurkers who are annoyed they can't get their content anymore (when they don't even contribute to the discussion)
Best looking camera I've used. The rear facing camera does an excellent job both in high and low light situations, the imagine processing after each photo really improves the shots.
The editing tools are also super handy, giving you quick presets that do a solid job improving photos. I'm fond of the portrait blur and unblur features.
The front facing camera feels pretty solid too. I still wish we had the same quality camera on the front for selfies, but it does a great job of capturing detail overall.
If only they were priced like the Nexus 5. That thing was cheap AF and was top notch, it really felt like they were selling them as loss leaders to get you into the ecosystem. Keen with the pixel 7 pro but would of been even happier if it were a bit cheaper
Most people access the Fediverse through one of the large instances: lemmy.world, kbin, or beehaw. New or small instances of Lemmy have no content by default, and can most easily get content by linking to larger Lemmy instances. This is done manually one "Community" at a time (I spent 15 minutes doing this yesterday). Meanwhile,...
I'd say for the majority of people who are coming here from Reddit, the concept of federated servers and looking for duplicates would be a pain. I think most people who come to a site like kbin search to see if there's a local community and if not would want to create it.
Admins I'd assume would be able to search connected other sites to see if a community exists elsewhere, but that sounds like it puts more work on them when they're busy with PRs and infrastructure work.
I've got no idea about what the best approach is, but it needs to be somewhat simple it we want people to join and stick around I feel.
As some subreddits continue blackouts to protest Reddit's plans to charge high prices for its API, Reddit has informed the moderators of those subreddits that it has plans to replace resistant moderation teams to keep spaces "open and accessible to users."
It's pretty obvious they're given free reign until they happen to disagree with admins and then it's "they're holding subreddits hostage", "they're just Stewarts" etc
Reddit admins will legitimately say and do anything to frame this as not their own fuck up
Their handling of this situation has been piss poor. It feels like every step along the way, from the initial announcement about API pricing to his awful Reddit AMA where he replied 12 times and then fled, it's been a terrible look.
I'm hoping more people see alternates like kbin and give them a go.
My first experience with Lemmy was thinking that the UI was beautiful, and lemmy.ml (the first instance I looked at) was asking people not to join because they already had 1500 users and were struggling to scale....
Whatever the performance bottlenecks are, I hope they can get them sorted so that any exponential growth caused by Reddit at the end of the month can be capitalized on.
I've got a feeling that other redditors who want to flee / branch out will look at these sites and so long as they see posts, comments and that it has a decent UI and loads well then people will stick around and build communities here.
Edit: I've been schooled in the comments, this is no longer a thing, they've relented and allowed more control over the censor list. But hey, it's kinda funny still, so, feel free to keep reading if you like......
I think from memory that the kbin dev was talking about getting "AutoMod" enabled on the site to help future moderation so having something like that would give you more options over how content is held in moderation.
I assume once AutoMod gets integrated there won't be a need for a global ban list anymore.
Just a quick and dirty userscript to add some features I feel are super important. I'll probably look into creating some real PRs, but I figure the devs are probably in "put out fires" mode right now....
Looks pretty good overall. Hopefully we get some style updates too soon, because there's a heap of vertical space used in the current designs that could be optimized.
Yep this is arguably one of the worst parts, the potential loss of solutions. There's been plenty of times a Google search has brought me to a Reddit thread where 1 guy had the answers
I'm thinking this is one of those features that's going to take the average user a while to understand, especially coming from somewhere like Reddit where the idea of crossposting is sharing a URL back to the original post
This is probably the better solution, keeping these subreddits open but focusing on where people can migrate to and the plan going forward. If enough people migrate over and can help populate the main subreddits like news / tech / gaming, it'll make these federated sites feel more active (and in turn a more viable place for people to switch to eventually since people want to see engagement)
Does anyone have a link to the kbin.social GitHub page?

So why do you have a Pixel?
Since there's no self posts here yet, I thought I'd bring up a question for those that decided to settle into Lemmy. Welcome to those here so far!...
The Lemmy User Experience is Better When Centralized into Fewer Instances

Is this normal? Seems like "Hot" would refer to posts within the last ~6 hours or so...
Excuse you, YouTube 😡 (sh.itjust.works)
Does Lemmy really benefit from Rust? Is code execution speed the bottleneck?

How is this acceptable?

Deleting your reddit content before migrating? DON'T, instead...
... go through your 'top posts', copy & paste the text into a doc, post it here, then delete it. Let reddit's loss be lemmy's gain!
Appreciation post: Crossposting is so good!
Idk where to post this, so I'm posting here....
Should posts in Ask Lemmy be required to have a question in the title?
Or is a question in the body sufficient?
Are you a professional or a hobbyist? How did you get your start in programming? What type of project/s are you working on currently?
I'm always interested in hearing other's stories and what they're working on. Anyone care to share?
