No simple answer for why people believe in conspiracy theories (www.sciencedaily.com)

People can be prone to believe in conspiracy theories due to a combination of personality traits and motivations, including relying strongly on their intuition, feeling a sense of antagonism and superiority toward others, and perceiving threats in their environment, according to new research.

I'm not sure this is new knowledge, but those are definitely part of it. From my interactions with family members who believe in conspiracy theories, I would add that the scorn and shunning from "unbelievers" adds to their isolation, making fellow conspiracy theorists the only source of validation and empathy. This causes a vicious cycle of radicalization.

I think if the rest of us can shun less and love more, we can help these people, who are deeply hurting on the inside, find joy and meaning in things beyond dark conspiracy theories.

Definitely some cult-like attributes, for sure. I'm not sure it's fair or productive to lay all the blame on the conspiracy theorists, though. Most of them are victims of misinformation from social media algorithms and people who they should have been able to trust.

Honestly, the constant complaining about fascism and bigotry is probably the thing I dislike about the Fediverse the most. Fascism and bigotry are horrible, and I am a descendant of people persecuted for their beliefs so it is definitely personal for me, but I just don't enjoy seeing constant complaints about it in my feed. Especially when the complaints aren't really about fascism but are actually complaints about right-wing authoritarianism or even political conservatism in general. I think I lose a few brain cells for every such thread I see.

Buddy, not national socialism.

BaldProphet,

What a nonsensical take. The conversation is about fascism and bigotry, bud. Fascism is literally what national socialism is. There are tons of bad things, like cannibalism or seal-clubbing. We're not talking about those.

BaldProphet,

Haha I know what fascism is, my guy. Not sure what point you're trying to make.

BaldProphet,

It's not splitting hairs, it's fighting against generalizations that isolate people and lead them to radicalization and extremism. I'm not even sure what point you're trying to make other than trolling, tbh.

Lol. Goodbye, troll.

The Bible quote is a joke about making fun of bald guys. Talk about bigotry, you're exhibit A.

How about Empyrion - Galactic Survival? Kind of like Space Engineers but with better singleplayer content.

They are violating the CCPA, without a doubt.

I don't understand why people keep going into MRI machines with metal. Don't they specifically tell you to take off all your metal?

BaldProphet,

Plenty of legal fireworks can do this too.

Never interrupt an adversary while they're making mistakes.

I think they're mostly just looking for cheaper housing.

Second Edition of ‘Preach My Gospel’ Is Now Available (newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org)

Nearly two decades after the first publication of “Preach My Gospel: A Guide to Missionary Service,” the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have issued a second edition.

People keep yelling "fascism" without understanding what it actually is.

EDIT: I'm not making any qualitative statements on fascism. I don't like it, myself. I'm simply saying that it's a word with a specific meaning, and it's thrown around to derogate the political right a bit too freely.

I'm not anal about following my budget. I keep a very loose, general awareness of it, but I'm not tracking receipts and payments every day.

Accidental keypresses on my first mechanical keyboard

Just bought my first mechanical keyboard, an Epomaker RT100 with Flamingo switches. Is it normal to be accidentally pressing keys (mostly shift and spacebar) while just resting my fingers on the keyboard? Is it because I've only used membrane keyboards up until now, and I'll eventually get used to the new sensitivity? Or should...

You might need a heavier spring on some keys. I have a heavier switch on my spacebar than all my other keys for exactly this reason.

Nextcloud is a server, not an instance.

However, you are correct. Nextcloud now has federated filesharing built in. It requires the server to be Internet-facing and to have a domain name. According to the documentation, federated shares have to be created manually in a process resembling sharing files in Google Drive.

I stand corrected. Nextcloud has enough federation integrated for me to consider it a part of the Fediverse.
