I don't live in the US, so my ISP doesn't really seem to care what I torrent, but the megathread vehemently recommends to always use one. Since VPNs aren't cheap and I'm on a strict budget (wouldn't pirate otherwise), is it really that dangerous to torrent without one?
There are a lot of self-hostable VPN services out there which are free. There is also Mullvad as previously mentioned and I myself use Nord (I don't necessarily recommend it for privacy, but it was convenient when I got it).
I will say for me that kbin looks extremely outdated. I'm very much a fan of newer layouts and in my opinion (at its current stage) kbin doesn't look nearly as attractive as new Reddit (at least on mobile).
It is WAY more responsive though, and I also have faith it will improve. I'm definitely here for the long haul as it has way better content and a better community. I am definitely looking forward to the apps though!
Currently, on the main instance, people have created 40191 accounts (+214 marked as deleted). I don't know how many are active because I don't monitor it, but once again, I greet all of you here :) In recent days, the traffic on the website has been overwhelming. It's definitely too much for the basic docker-compose setup,...
I'm not familiar with the architecture of the app (nor where it's hosted), but if it happens to be on AWS then you should be able to spin up an ECS cluster (especially since it's already containerized) and load balance it that way with an ALB configured during setup. Imo that would be the fastest way to do it (again, assuming this is on AWS)
Everyone in kbin is handsome and / or gorgeous! Everyone in Lemmy is a Lemmy user 😛 /s
In all seriousness, kbin is developed by Ernest who is an extremely devoted and trustworthy dev. Lemmy is developed by CCP shills. That's the reason I chose kbin.
kbin is also getting steadily updated and I have a very good feeling about its stability and featureset in a few months taking a look at the GitHub.
I've only made two posts so far, but everyone has given legitimate and intelligent responses to both. It's made me realize how not used to that I had become. It's an overwhelming positive feeling to not be nervous about sharing with this community. Thank you to all of you
It's also very nice not having random downvotes for literally no reason. Some comments on Reddit would just end up getting a random downvote first, preventing it from getting any form of meaningful traction. No idea why, my takes weren't exactly spicy there, but here that doesn't seem to happen!
They ARE different sites, but they're federated. Basically, sites on the Fediverse (the nickname for the group of sites which share this functionality) can communicate. So, for example, Mastadon, Lemmy and kbin are all on the Fediverse, so they can communicate (when sites on the Fediverse are able to communicate, people say they are "federated").
Let me give you an example!
Say you're on Mastadon and you post something. That post will be visible to users on Lemmy and kbin, and people from Lemmy and kbin can comment and interact with it (since they all share the same protocol). Lemmy / kbin users will not have the 400 character limit Mastadon has, but they will still be able to interact.
Same thing if you make a post on Lemmy - on the whole, the Fediverse will be able to see your posts. Same with your comment here (Lemmy users can see it. For an example of a comment from another site, check out Stux's comment below - they are from Mastadon)
They are all distinct apps with distinct features, they just can communicate with each other. Imagine it like Twitter and Facebook could see each others' posts.
Now, some instances of Lemmy and kbin (basically, some servers of them) are blocked from federation with others on the Fediverse (aka, recently Beehaw - a Lemmy instance - blocked another Lemmy instance) but that is on a per-instance basis.
Why YSK: Spotify forces you either to pay, listen to ads or to find unofficial, potentially dangerous versions to use it. It's better to find an alternative, both for your wallet and for your peace of mind....
I'm sick and tired of working for other people. Having to take PTO to do literally anything you want to do on a weekday is so fucked, and I'm one of the lucky people (who works PST while in EST). Corporate policies and politics truly do run rampant through every company, and I just need to keep working on products until one becomes sustainable long-term.
Feel like that's the key to financial and physical freedom - making the next big thing, then getting it to a solid state and just doing gradual improvements. Don't pull a spez, don't piss people off and don't add too many new features after a while or you'll kill what you have. And for the love of GOD, don't go public.
IPO'ing and going public are what kill companies with great things running for them, simply due to the "keep growing every day until the company inevitably collapses" mindset.
I agree on Doom and Doom 2. Sheer fun! I will say though that Doom 2016 didn't capture the original magic for me personally - it just felt too... formulaic?
Parking lots are absolutely everywhere. Some zones just prohibit large ones for historic reasons or otherwise (it's possible maybe you were in one of those zones)?
Visit Nashville, TN (around Centennial Park), Orlando, FL (around the Mall at Millennia) or Jacksonville, FL (around St. John's Town Center) and you'll see what I mean.
The mods there have decided to allow underage looking content, skirting close to CP. Unless we want such disgusting stuff on our feed, I think we should defederate from that instance....

Is a VPN necessary for torrenting?
I don't live in the US, so my ISP doesn't really seem to care what I torrent, but the megathread vehemently recommends to always use one. Since VPNs aren't cheap and I'm on a strict budget (wouldn't pirate otherwise), is it really that dangerous to torrent without one?
I made the mistake of checking Reddit (using my last few days of Apollo) and came across a complaint about Lemmy that flabbergasted me (lemmy.world)
Do people actually like all of the overdesigned clutter to the point where it makes them not want to switch sites?...
Anyone have comfort movies or tv shows?
For me it's Wolf children. I watch it when I'm not feeling the best physically or mentally. What's your comfort watch?

In your opinion, what is a thing that lived up to the hype it had or still has?
It can be a movie, a scientific discovery, food, whatever

Why is Lemmy called Lemmy?
Reddit is called as such because “I read it on Reddit”

Nothing important here. I just want to see how many people are moving away from Reddit.
