I'm 25 and I don't have a drivers license. I mean, I've never really felt the need to go and get one. Public transport is usually the fastest option where I live, and it takes a lot less responsibility to use it....
I remember having a bus come every hour. If you miss that bus, then oops you're an hour late for work.
If you run 5 minutes late in your car, then you are 5 minutes late for work.
Also if you have to take 3 or so busses to connect somewhere, depending on how the scheduling worked out, you could get unlucky and have an hour wait between bus 1 & 2 and an hour wait between bus 2 & 3.
Taxis cost a decent amount of money here.
Uber/Lyft/etc are hit and miss. App says if you need to be somewhere at 9am, to request the ride at like 8:30 or whatever. And when you do, you don't get anyone showing up or someone will grab your ride, not come to you for 10 minutes, and then put your request for a ride back out there for someone else to grab.
"I'd like to order the newest chip you got. The Beyond Plus Ultra Core Ultra 5+ Supreme Deluxe. No, I will not accept the Beyond Plus Ultra Core Ultra 5 Supreme Deluxe. That is last gen garbage from last week."
Exactly. Instead of being a reddit user and admins ban a bunch of subs that can no longer be accessed at all, you can still access those instances with another account.
Reddit can in the future ban NSFW content and there is nothing you can do to view those subreddits ever again.
My guess is they are the kind of person who thinks free speech is the one and ultimate truth in life. Also free speech means "I can use slurs and bully people to suicide but if you call me a bigot then you don't appreciate free speech" without realizing the irony of not accepting the free speech of others.
Google is already an awful search engine and was most useful only for reddit. Search Engine Optimization killed it.
For example, do you know why every recipe Google shows has a 35 page life story article before the recipe? Because it takes you longer to scroll through the page and find the recipe and see if that's what you want. So Google says oh, this website is good and entertaining and full of so many words! This goes higher up! They don't write the stories because the bloggers care. They write stories because it's the only way to get their website seen on Google.
Meanwhile the website you actually want... The one with a simple recipe and no fluff? Well that's not going to sell itself to the Search Engine Optimization. So it's much further down on the list, several pages down.
The same shitification is happening with every website. Every website is a little bit worse than it has to be simply to optimize it's position on the almighty Google.
When you look for the "top shoes for running" or "best phone of 2023", those are just rushed articles with no research done by people with the sole purpose of pumping out millions of articles just to get some spots on Google.
Google was only good for linking to reddit because reddit could never get their search engine working no matter how many times they tried it.
I did see @alyaza say that kbin hasn't been anywhere near as problematic. And you may be right about who chose to go where. It is interesting one causes more issues than the other.
I will say I have not really seen much issue inside of kbin, personally. The community I've seen so far has been pretty chill.
I see for the home page, we can either have: Subscribed (magazines we sub to), All (everything in the fediverse?), Moderated (Magazines we moderate), and Favourites.
Two options I'm looking for are:
seeing everything just in kbin.social
Seeing everything from any instance in kbin. (So stuff like kbin.info would show up, but lemmy and beehaw wouldn't)
Is there currently some way to do either of these? I know Mastodon lets you organize that way, so if you're in something like mstdn.games, then you can view everything from that specific community only. I think it's called "Local" over there.
I haven't found it or can't find anyone talking about it, yet. So I'm wondering if I'm just missing some obvious way to sort my home page that way.
Also, let me know if this is better suited for a different magazine!
Porn has always been a driving force of new technologies. While Kbin isn't a new technology per se I would say it's a indication that the community is here to stay.
I'm only guessing, but I assume email is likely to help cut down on spam bots. Maybe? (Someone do tell me if that's wrong. I wouldn't mind learning something!)
I know some users here say seeing who upvotes promotes transparency. Maybe you're less likely to upvote some hatespeech if you're attached to it and not doing so anonymously. Which then means it gets less traction and the user feels less welcome. Which curbs it.
But then privacy is important, too. There's nothing wrong with me going to the adult store and buying a gimp suit for myself with the Anal Blaster Master 3000: Destroyer of Rims vibrating dildo pack. But I also don't need my neighbors or family to know. Just like I don't need people to know I upvoted that really hot video of a man smearing chunky peanut butter on his incredibly hairy chest as a girl tries to lick it off.
I'm sticking around for now and seeing if things either change (like if the users for upvoted etc get hashed or something for example) and how things end up feeling in the long run with or without those changes.
This post seems like a good reminder for everyone that people can see who upvoted, downvoted, and boosted any post and comment by clicking "more" and "activity".
I introduced kbin to someone today who asked what the fediverse was. I answered for them of course, but it made me realize that the concept is still technobabble for most people. The average joe probably doesn't care or notice that server A is really talking to server B. Just have them find out on their own and if a mass...
I think what scares people off is looking for an explanation and seeing 15 page documents or 30 minute videos explaining it.
"Fediverse lets different sites talk to each other. It's like if Facebook could follow people on Twitter and subscribe to subreddits so now your Facebook page has Facebook posts, reddit Twitter posts, and reddit posts all in one, if you want. If you join a site on the fediverse, you can communicate with any other site on the fediverse easily." 3 sentences gets the job done for what's needed.
One they're in kbin or whatever, they can learn the site. "oh a magazine is like a subreddit or like channels in a discord server" or whatever they're used to.
I wish that's how it was explained to me. I'm not massively into technology but it interests me casually so I was able to put up with the long explanations because it felt interesting to me. But it really could be boiled down so much more for newbies.
The concept of a fast food chili dog has been baffling me for the last few days. Are there really people that roll up to Sonic, order a chili dog and just slurp that thing down while driving back to their desk job? Do these psychopaths just keep a change of clothes in their car at all times, or do they wake up and think, “Oh...
A proper chili dog should be eaten with a fork and knife.
Once I got here, you lost all credibility. It doesn't matter if the toppings fall everywhere. Chili dogs are foods for savages that care not for the mess that is made and know not how to use fancy modern inventions such as "forks" and "knives". I don't remember sonic ever using silverware because he eats them the right way.
I mean to be fair, wearing reddit merch in public before this whole thing was also asking to be stabbed. I don't think I would have ever felt safe wearing a reddit shirt in public at any point in time.
Apparently there's some sort of fix in the pipeline related to this, but at the very least, I'd like to be able to type kbin.social/m/kbinmeta and be redirected to kbin.social/m/kbinMeta
It's a downside if you want to just quickly go to something like kbin.social/m/kbinMeta for example. If I'm manually typing it, I may forget if the "M" is uppercase or not. What about the "k" since it's the first letter? I mean if I get it wrong, I just change the casing around or something.
For example sometimes when I want to find something new, I would just go to reddit.com/r/gamedeals and it doesn't matter if I put GameDeals or gamedeals. I still get sent there with no problem.
I don't think it's a massive downside, but I don't see how its an upside. What control does it give people? Whether the letters are small or big? Or am I missing something here?
Hostnames are case insensitive. E-mail addresses are case insensitive.
Fun fact: E-mail address are technically case sensitive, however, every single modern email client/service makes sure to send the email regardless of what casing you use. But that's just kind of being pedantic about the technical side of things for us end-users, it's basically treated as not case-sensitive. This wasn't me trying to say "you're wrong" but rather give a fun little side fact.
Seems many things are case sensitive. I believe usernames are, as well. Not sure if it's a fediverse standard or what, though. I'm not going to call doom on the site for that. It's still better than reddit.
Well of course. Now that other mods likely requested action to be done, reddit saw a perfect opportunity to lessen the blow of the blackout by diminishing the lead mod's role.
I see more and more reasons to not go back even if api pricing changes.
Also, side note: I am surprised at how big that subreddit still is. Sucks for the head mod to have the rules changed on them.

Isn't it ironic.... that we all left reddit because 3rd party apps were being killed off, and came to a place where there are no 3rd party apps.
edited to meet rule #3!

hey folks, we'll be quick and to the point with this one:...
Since we are seeing a lot more porn post I think it's clear Kbin is here to stay.

If brands were brutally honest. What brand would have what slogan?
Just wondering...
When introducing members to kbin/lemmy don't mention the fediverse!
