Did you just give us a fucking screenshot of an article headline instead of linking an actual article? (Edit 2: OP has now edited the post and added the link, thanks for that I guess.)

Edit: AND you gave it a misleading title? Jesus Christ, this is the peak of low effort bullshit.

Here’s the article, in case anyone wants to actually learn something instead of just reading a headline and commenting something edgy: theverge.com/…/openai-arizona-state-university-as…

Here’s what it actually says:

The university will begin taking project submissions from faculty and students on where to use ChatGPT beginning in February. … There may even be room for chatbots to act as personalized tutors for ASU students, said Jones.

Literally doesn’t say a single word about “replacing advisors or educators”.

You can tale a dump, throw up in the sink (I’ve found such arrangements useful in the past) and then hose yourself down afterwards. Very convenient.

Why would an open source browser remove a feature just because a corperation did it. Talking like that, might as well use Chrome. Oh wait. But it’s *spyware / anti AdBlock.

Why doesn’t Firefox make *using AdBlock harder since Google does the same? Firefox isn’t competing for Market share, it’s suppose to be an Opensource browser and being so should mean that you have the best features for the user, and not a company.

Had you ever asked why would Google get rid of 3rd party cookies, and also ask, what did they replace 3rd party cookies with? another way for them to track you, and only them. They took potential revenue from sites that aren’t them just because they can.

orclev,

Would you refuse to visit websites that force registration even if the account is free?

Yes, I already do. I don’t visit Instagram because you need to login to view posts.

What’s all the fuss about, you don’t care?

I definitely care.

Is advertising a necessary evil in fair trade for content?

Ah, now this is an interesting question. I can certainly see an argument that ads are necessary to support “free” content, although personally in many cases I prefer to pay a subscription to support content rather than being subjected to ads.

Really though this is kind of a red herring because it’s predisposing that violating your privacy and collecting personal information is a prerequisite to serving ads. It’s required for individually targeted ads, yes, but they don’t need to traget ads to the individual, they could target the ad by site or the contents of the page hosting the ad.

Would this limit your visiting of websites to only a narrow few you are willing to trade personal details for?

I would not visit any site that sold my details to an advertiser.

Is this a bad thing for the internet experience as whole, or just another progression of technology?

Yes, this is very bad.

Is this no different from using any other technology platform that’s free (If it’s free, you’re the product)?

There’s a reason I don’t use most “social media” sites.

Should website owners just accept a lower revenue model and adapt their business, rather than seeking higher / unfair revenues from a privacy invasive practices of the past?

Yes, or find a different revenue model that doesn’t invade people’s privacy.

Mechanize,

“One of the core requirements here, and this is really important, is for users for this to be opt-in,” says Brouwer. “I can choose whether or not I want to participate in being open to exchanging messages with third parties. This is important, because it could be a big source of spam and scams.”

Let me translate this for you: “We will make users hop on the most cumbersome, frustrating and inefficient way we can think of to enable interoperability. And making it defaulted to off will mean people using other apps will need to find other channels to ask for it to be enabled on our users’ end, making it worthless.

And don’t forget: we will put a bunch of scary warnings, and only allow to go all in, with no middle ground or granularity!”

Great stuff, thank you. I can’t wait.

“We don’t believe interop chats and WhatsApp chats can evolve at the same pace,” he says, claiming it is “harder to evolve an open network” compared to a closed one.

Ah, so they are going for the Apple’s approach with iMessage and Android sms. Cool, cool.

I hope my corporate-to-common translator is broken, because this does just sound bad.

  • Diabolo96,

Apple know it’s fanbase will scream at the EU instead of them. I mean, they ate the bullshit apple claim that allowing sideloading will auto-magically give them viruses. I know Apple caters to the none-techy people but this is plain stupid.

I geuss the comments I read on reddit, hacker news and even lemmy were all fragments of my imagination. It pissed me off that people were literally defending companies fucking them but eh, they kinda deserve what’s happening to them at this point.

    Kiosade,

If you think only the Americans have highly polarized politics and fucked up during COVID, I have a bridge to sell to you…

Does AI-generated art posted on lemmy bother you?

I find that i can spot AI Images fairly easily these days, especially the sort of fantastical tableaus that get posted to the various AI communities around lemmy. I’m tired of seeing them; it all looks the same to me. Was wondering if im being too sensitive, or if other people are similarly bored of the constant unimaginative...

    QubaXR,
    @QubaXR@lemmy.world avatar

I’m fed up with it, as in: I can recognize AI generated images with ease, and they all look kinda same-y. I have nothing against people using ai or posting the content, but at the same time I think it’s simply bad art

I’m a digital ~anarchist. All this regulation doesn’t help, it just makes the Internet more ridiculous, and raises the barriers to entry - fuck em. Rather than regulating some sane browser features, we left it to every site to implement a cookies popup, and they are unique enough that they aren’t easily filtered. So now every site has cringe popups that nobody reads or understands, thanks regulators!! Really solved that shit. I don’t trust these assholes, it’s all gonna get lobbied weird and big money pretty much always wins

Real open source is the answer. Common goods for common people, not led by capitalism, but led by shared infrastructure needs that benefit all. Protect the rights to anonymity/privacy online, instead of helping big tech deanonymize everyone. Uphold the values of the constitution of the USA, but in the digital space. And otherwise fuck off, govt

    yamanii,

A better solution would be to force sites to care about the Do Not Track browser setting that currently does nothing as told by the browsers themselves.

    Pratai,

    Stop reading the news.

I’m serious. Just stop. It’s ALL biased to one side or the other so whether you’re on the left, or the right- you’re going to get hate and negativity thrown at you. Also, know that it has ALWAYS been this way. It’s just that it’s difficult to not see it all happening because of the internet- which brings me back to my original point.

STOP READING THE NEWS. Nothing good comes from it and your mental health isn’t a fair trade for staying up to date with the current dumbassery in politics.

    CarrotBottom,

It wouldn’t exist at all if capitalism didn’t exist.

People would just get cancer and die like they used to.

Capitalism is the reason we (and you) have nice things.

Get mad at the court that forced them to take the story down not at Reuters.

    ecnkmaxo,

Yay more AIshit images to plague the internet

YouTube Says New 5-Second Video Load Delay Is Supposed to Punish Ad Blockers, Not Firefox Users (www.404media.co)

Firefox users are reporting an 'artificial' load time on YouTube videos. YouTube says it's part of a plan to make people who use adblockers "experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using."

    queue,
    @queue@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    “They’re the same picture.”

Also, that does not explain why:

    • Chrome users who use an adblocker don’t get the issue
    • Firefox users who do not use an adblocker get the issue
    • FIrefox users who use an adblocker, but change User Agent to Chrome, don’t get the issue

Now, if only we knew who made Chrome and YouTube… The mind boggles.

    reddig33,

Yet another unfinished Netflix series to add to the pile.

    MedicatedMaybe,

It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. Why would I ever start a show on Netflix that isn’t already either well established or complete. I’m sick of finding something I like and it just gets cancelled 1 or 2 seasons in. I’m done with Netflix because of this and the ridiculous price.
