Tell me the details like what makes yours perfect, why, and your cultural influence if any. I mean, rice is totally different with Mexican, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and Persian food just to name a few. It is not just the spices or sauces I'm mostly interested in. These matter too. I am really interested in the grain variety...
Filipino here. Rice is a staple of our diet, and traditionally we've mostly eaten Dinorado or Sinandomeng rice. I'd say in the past 20-30 years though Jasmine and Basmati rice have also gained popularity in our dishes. I've always been taught this method:
In a pot, rinse the rice 2-3 times, draining the water each time. Rinse just enough that most of the cloudiness of the water is gone, but some still remains. You'll want that starch.
Fill the pot with enough water to cover the rice. Use enough so that if you dip your middle finger to touch the rice underneath, the water line hits the second joint on your finger (I believe the anatomical term is proximal interphalangeal joint lol). It'll be enough water for whatever amount of rice you have - everytime.
Cover the pot, put it on the flame, let it boil. Once it's boiling, turn the heat down and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, until the water evaporates.
I forgot about that. We usually put pandan leaves in there from time to time to make it more fragrant. But otherwise, it's mostly plain rice. Our dishes usually have either a tomato-based sauce or broth anyway, so that takes care of additional flavor.
We call leftover, day-old rice "bahaw", and is usually made into "sinangag", which is literally garlic fried rice, and is usually cooked during the following day's breakfast.
Haha, sometimes I do that, but when I'm cooking for myself, often no. I think most other households do though, since we (Pinoys in general) often serve rice on a separate plate and not straight from the pot, so that takes care of the fluffing part.
I have exactly the same thoughts. Hell no, and then a maybe combined with a long list of conditions that are as realistic as the API usage prices Reddit expects 3rd party devs to pay for.
I bought the Mustang Alpha and Avenger Titan pledges last year and played for quite a bit. Ran around naked in the cold of New Babbage. Passed out and woke up in Brentworth. Suited up and did some mining with my multitool. Flew the ships. Did some fetch quests. Fired a gun or two. Blew up the ships (multiple times). Had a blast.
I really think it will take years at this point to get it to where they want it to be, but in the meantime I enjoyed how the players treated it seriously, and not seriously at the same time, if that makes sense.
BTW, there's a pretty active community on !starcitizen.
It's a little daunting to me that in some cases there are 2 or more communities between the federated alternatives; what's the best way to corral these? I had thought I could perhaps subscribe to Lemmy instances on kbin; is that correct? If so, how? Thank you in advance....
The migration caused a large jump in the amount of users, and with that you will have disorder and confusion.
But in time, the communities/magazines where people actually congregate in will rise to the top of the lists. That's where you can find the most active discussions. Even now I found myself unsubbing from some of the quiet kbin magazines I found on my first day and subbing to the bigger communities on beehaw and lemmy instead, which works for me because I want that feel.
The beauty of duplicates is if you find that you're being drowned out, you can go to a place where you can have more of a voice, and discussions will be slower paced, or you can start your own. Most people crave simplicity though so realize that not every alternative will be alive; some of them are veritable ghost towns.
With regards to kbin.social itself, I like that it's relatively open and neutral, instead giving users the access to block users/magazines/communities/whole instances as they see fit. As far as I know it hasn't been deferedated by other instances yet, and that's great because you can reach most anything in the Fediverse.
If it comes to that, they're well within their rights to. At the moment I'm at 152 subscriptions to different places on the Fediverse, which are close analogs/outright migrations of the same subreddits I once browsed. Only 10 of those are on beehaw, so if I get cut off from those, I'll go elsewhere.
"iusearchlinux.fyi" is one of the greatest domain names ever.
This is really cool, but yeah I'm hoping that a similar directory will exist for kbin down the line. I noticed when using the magazine search function here that magazines local to the instance get listed first which is fine, but there's no way to sort the threads/comments columns by highest to lowest. Sometimes you just want to be able to subscribe to one community/magazine which is the most active for a particular category and not clutter up your feed, even if those are on beehaw or lemmy.world.
Not a lawyer, but that's defamation, isn't it? Mr. CEO's saying Christian is this and that bad thing, when Christian has proof otherwise. Mr. CEO repeats this lie about Christian, damaging his reputation. In Christian's own words, it's a "potentially career-ending lie".
I've tried both as a forum admin. I think it's just a matter of preference at this point. phpBB is still sporting that old compact style, which kinda makes it look dated.
Yeah it takes a while to load and kinda bogs down the whole browser lol. Beautiful visualization though, a few big planets and lots of smaller ones in one Lemmy galaxy. Saved!
Currently using on mobile, the larger touch area for collapsing/uncollapsing works great in practice. I also see the modified scaling, and for the most part it's well done!
Although I can still force it to cut off some text if I find a discussion that goes deep enough. Not a huge issue though.
EDIT: I noticed that as a consequence of making the collapse activate on one click, highlighting portions of the comment (for example if you want to quote it) is now difficult. On desktop, you have to hold the mouse click then press Ctrl + C, otherwise if you let go of the click and collapse the comment, nothing is captured to the clipboard.
On Android though, since a tap and hold action on a word makes the context menu pop up, this doesn't happen, you can select the phrase you want to copy without the comment collapsing.
I'll probably keep using this on mobile, and use the other script for desktop.

Glad to hear it worked out! I forgot exactly what I typed when I was trying to federate that community I was looking for. So a couple of follow-up questions, if you don't mind lol. Still trying to wrap my head around this stuff, myself.
When you say that "legostorage@lemmy.world" didn't work for you, did you mean you had to type in "@legostorage@lemmy.world" instead (with the @ sign at the start)?
I've heard that kbin supports blocking entire instances at a user level
Yes, to do this, go to kbin.social/d/insertinstancehere, then block from there.
I think this is one of the strengths of kbin, because kbin itself can be open and neutral as much as possible and let each user decide the content they want/don't want to see. Of course this doesn't stop bad actors from coming over, making accounts, and start giving the instance a bad reputation, making it increasingly likely for it to be defederated by other instances...
I'm interested in spinning one up as well, mostly for having the choice of what to name the domain lmao. Right now I gotta look more into it. Hopefully @dan can get back to us with some numbers.
Finally made an account

Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?
I myself am really on the fence about this....

I've been on the Fediverse since 2016, and I still get a little mixed up by how things work.
