Reddit does not really have a reputation of fair-play. As you have deleted your account without deleting your data you might find it restored with a dummy handle "for consistency".

My advice to anyone: if you want to take your data back from reddit you should first edit your posts (to some "lorem ipsum suck fpez" gibberish) then delete them using tools like power delete suite or shreddit.

Then you should keep your account alive and regularly pay reddit a visit just to see if its content hasn't been restored. If you're in a country under GDPR regulation you can also ask for a GDPR archive of your data that should cover whatever they have on you including posts and comment. This is a good way of verifying what you deleted was actually deleted and not just "marked as" and yet available.

I have left reddit. As in, I do not engage further than discussing migration issues. But I keep an eye on my account and will do so until I'm sure it's been thoroughly cleaned up. Account deletion is not yet in order, it might be before they go public because I also want them to fall hard from that.

Totally agreeing. I remember of my BBS and Usenet days and we're facing a somewhat similar situation: in a distributed architecture we will be dealing with unsavory individuals and communities. We definitely will.

I was talking about this exact situation the other day with a reddit-migrant (net)friend of mine. We were debating on how and where to move the (somewhat important) France subreddit, as for now the most populated French community in the verse is hosted on an instance relaying lemmygrad - which raises some concern.

Well, I talked to him about the UN. Sorry to get a bit pseudo-political here but I think you'll get the idea.

The comparison I used is that while it is quite irritating (at the moment, but not only) that Russia is sitting at the security council, it is still a good thing that it is still a member of the UN. Because what matters in the end is that we all can discuss issues and overcome conflicts in order to keep on living all together.

And here in the fediverse we don't even have to deal with a network-wide veto from any unsavory community. Worst case, they're sitting on their "local security council" - meaning they're ruling within their own node, but as a federation we don't have to comply if thing s get really ugly.

However in the end what matters is the federation - the UN. When talking about server-to-server or server-to-federation conflicts defederation must be the last resort, because what really matters in the end is the federation surviving. Without it we're just powerless and will soon get back to some shady reddit clone à la squabbles.

Now, to get back to these usenet days. If you remember those days we had newsgroups varying from gardening to politics, but wa also had some less civil newsgroups including cp and alike. Most of these "worst contenders" were only relayed by a few major nodes but still they made their way through Usenet because of its very distributed architecture.

People not wanting to have any interaction with those newsgroups could either connect to a node ralaying them while not downloading their headers, or they could connect to a more "safe space" node. And on the other hand people who wished to interact with those newsgroups had to connect to anode relaying them, just as simple as that.

I am convinced we're heading towards a similar architecture and situation. As the fediverse grows we definitely will encounter bad people and bad communities, and sometimes we will look as bad people or bad communities to others. This is my truth, tell me yours, that's the way it goes. And it's not really a big deal.

I'm saying it's not a big deal because in the end, with a distributed architecture, the only censorship that really matters is yours. Your own filters, your choice of either connecting instance or followed communities and individuals. Due to its very nature, in a distributed architecture you are the one setting up your own barriers. Hardware and network distribution cannot and shall not do this part of the job for you, and server-to-server defed should only be the worst-case scenario in order - for instance not to relay (and mirror) cp, and for openly bot-friendly instances.

Now mind you, am I saying there is no safe space? Well, to a certain extent. Just as in a centralized architecture each of us will make their own "nest" so to speak and will interact with the people and communities we choose. We can board a plane with a nazi without being "tainted" by its naziness and if it really unsettles us we can always ask for a separation curtain - as in, individual defederation. Those are already programmed and will be available in the next versions, allowing any user to just ignore some communities even if they are relayed by their instance.

In a distributed architecture, we must all deal with this double-edged paradigm: We WILL encounter people and communities we don't like, but we do NOT HAVE TO suffer from them. Individual filters (and soon, individual defed) are here to help us establish our personal way of cherry-picking whatever this network has to offer.

This is usenet on steroids. There is no premade safe space and it shouldn't be, because what matters in the end is the network and not its junk. In a distributed architecture it's mostly up to the end user to set their own junk filters.

YSK: If you reply to a comment, you should probably give it a vote

Why YSK? Comments you reply positively to, should definitely get your upvote. Comments you disagree with should be at your discretion. Trolls deserve downvotes (seriously, they live for those). Disagreeing with someone in the midst of a good discussion doesn't necessarily warrant one, and might deserve an upvote. Even if you...

I'm sure there are people here with more experience that will be glad helping you comprehend what is and what can be done before you come up preposterously "establishing guidelines".

Depends on the content.

Recently I was reading on r/modcoord about the r/canning mod team being served the adminmail of doom. The top mod there explained that they are a few individuals willing to moderate that particular sub because they are savvy enough to moderate it properly. As in, if you say something wrong on this sub it could end up with people dead of botulism because of bad advice.

Another example which I'm more involded in is r/electronic_cigarette. The sub has a ton of relevant advice, reviews and recipes so moving its content would instantaneously bring up its knowledge base to the fediverse.

Now if it's just to fill the place with casual chitchat oh well, it'll happen soon anyway. Won't be a major game changer if some of it is imported from reddit.

There is one thing though we probably should pay attention to: is it legal? How far does reddit "own" the content we bring and can they cause mischief and lawsuits for plagiarism for such imported content?

I cannot exclude the possibility that the recent increase in bot accounts on some instances is somewhat linked to such already engaged subterfuges. I mean, the time frame is way too coincidental.

As much I appreciated earlier tracks (How Long), as much I'm miffed here. I expected a new SE track and all I received was this lousy Yes clichés potpourri.

But what Reddit is putting a price on is access to content generated by its users, not Reddit itself.

Spot on. Spez is short-sighted thinking he can "musk out" of this situation, as reddit is no twitter.

Twitter's value is on its users: often empty but famous shells moving hot air from tweet to tweet. Reddit's value was in the content we brought but as soon as we stop feeding the beast it's just a glorified wayback machine. That is, if we do not delete our past contributions.

If I read correctly their fine print they have 45 + 45 days to respond. Rest assured they'll take their time.

On the other hand I don't think you're the only one requesting either deletion or a GDPR archive right now so summer break might be slightly postponed or crunched for some people up there. Just a wild guess but still.

Now I sure know what the "F." stands for.

Hawne,

Devs will have some hard weeks (probably months) facing the new challenges that come with the exodus. Not even mentioning all the work needed to counteract eventual (probable) malevolent subterfuges such as these bot swarms.
I'll make sure to buy them some coffee. Jugs of.

I like all I've read so far from other comments, Blade Runner taking the lead by far. However I'd like to add a somewhat iconic yet often forgotten item to the list: Appleseed, the original one.

Let's start with relatively mild moods. Of Monsters and Men have a few songs with nice buildups. Dirty Paws for instance.

Midlake's Young Bride might also be worth mentioning.

Probably unexpected, but she is definitely crazy (in the best possible way): Aurora - All Is Soft Inside

Also her direct relative (musically), Bel Canto - In Zenith

On to rock now, three songs with incredible buildups I cannot help but recommend:

Thunder Road, covered by Tortoise and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy

Dancing With The Wind - Days Of The New

Pain Of Salvation - Her Voices

If you can't stand a side remark and a bit of rabbithole chasing maybe you'd be more comfortable with something more rigid than the fediverse, unless you take it as a country club. And oh, a couple users frowned upon my comment henceforth you are so right and I am so doomed.
Sigh...

That's quite informative and reassuring, thanks a lot. It may be what I needed to tilt the scales towards having a look at beehaw.

Hawne,
Hawne avatar

Naye, I was jumping to the general topic of beehaw as I am new to the fediverse and I wanted to confront the slight prejudice I had against beehaw because of its "non-conformity" with other instances. And I did it here because I was sure it would be a post attracting beehaw enthusiasts. Not trolling, just seeking positive answers. @kara had the kindness to reply with enough and relevant information and I stand corrected, which was what I was looking for.

I'm not sure this data's worth a lot though, as many users (likely most of them) are using anon or throwaway accounts with none to little link to the rest of their activity. Sure it can be processed for statistics but I don't think there's a lot to extract further. Reddit is no facebook where the average joe has its "average joe" account, and I don't think signing up with a google/apple/whatever account is the most common practice on reddit (or at least with your real, non-portmanteau anon account).

As for archived posts and comments they're already publicly available on archive sites. Why would anyone buy them?
