JasSmith,

I wish wagons were more popular. They're great for fitting all the stuff in for the family, but lighter and much better handling. I don't know why SUVs became the thing, but I wish wagons would be a come-back. A Tesla wagon would be awesome.

JasSmith,

I’ve always leaned towards the side of Palestine, but no more. Hamas has been assaulting, raping, and murdering innocent people. Where’s the military strategy in that? How does that help Palestinians reclaim stolen land? There’s just no reason and no excuse. The Palestinian people broadly support Hamas, so it’s not like this is a handful of bad apples.

JasSmith,

I support them turning to rebels. I don’t support them turning to terrorists who intentionally murder innocent civilians. There is a large distinction between the two.

The Lemmy Developers are now personally blocking and banning users and communities critical of Tankies and the Developers. (sh.itjust.works)

A few years ago, the Lemmy Developers decided to keep their political views on lemmygrad while keeping lemmy.ml more neutral. Now they are banning users who are critical of their actions and bigotry....

JasSmith, (edited )

I started with an account on Lemmy.ml and was banned when I argued with the owner/developer, Dessalines, about the Xinjiang genocide being real. I noped out of there very quickly, and you should too. Other users have been banned for questioning the Tiananmen Square massacre.

JasSmith,

Cullen White, AnitaB.org’s chief impact officer, said in a video posted to X, formerly Twitter, that some registrants had lied about their gender identity when signing up, and men were now taking up space and time with recruiters that should go to women. “All of those are limited resources to which you have no right,” White said. AnitaB.org did not respond to a request for comment.

Who picks their gender identity? The individuals or Cullen White? If anything this underscores the insanity of identity politics. If gender is whatever an individual feels like, then this event was just thousands of women and non-binary folks, and White needs to stop being such a bigot. However I think most of us understand that this is nonsense.

JasSmith,

Kicking the habit Efforts by authorities to curb smoking and its health hazards, not least by prohibiting puffing in restaurants and cafes and banning ads for cigarettes, have prompted sharp reductions in cigarette sales in recent years.

While I support bans in restaurants and cafes, I don't support prohibition, which is what a lot of Western nations are aiming at. We learned our lesson during the alcohol prohibition years in America, and for the last 70 years around the world with marijuana prohibition. The social effects are far worse when forcing recreational drugs underground. Educate support addiction programs, but don't ban.

I’ve never met anyone who hates communism more than the colleagues of mine who grew up under communism. Their neighbours disappeared for saying the wrong things. They were hungry and cold as children every day. Sometimes they didn’t have any shoes. They weren’t allowed to leave their country for holidays. They couldn’t afford it, even if they were allowed. They couldn’t study what they wanted. Their entire educational system was political propaganda. Freedom of religion didn’t exist.

It always amazes me how the most vocal proponents of communism come from the most sheltered, most privileged people alive who would retch from learning about the atrocities committed in the name of communism. If they only spent a few minutes on Google.

JasSmith,

You don’t need to train a pointer puppy to point. They do it from birth. You don’t need to train a sheep dog to herd. They do it from the moment they can walk. You don’t need to teach a pit bull to latch and shake. They also do that from birth. Training can mitigate the risk, but they’re still very dangerous dogs.

Justin Roiland used his ‘Rick and Morty’ fame to pursue young fans, text messages show (www.nbcnews.com)

In the years following the 2013 debut of Adult Swim’s cartoon phenomenon “Rick and Morty,” its star and co-creator Justin Roiland became a titan of the animation and video game industry and a rock star of youth counterculture. His artistic style and caricatures became ubiquitous in cannabis culture, and his career expanded...

JasSmith,

The imprecision is by design. Modern journalism is trash.

JasSmith,

Or do as I do.

  1. Buy game.

  2. Never play it.

I have a problem.

JasSmith,

This is one of the more biting criticisms I've heard of the game. It results in a lack of feeling of scale and scope. The universe just feels like connected places, instead of worlds within a galaxy. No Mans Sky got this right, and it's surprising that Bethesda would fumble such a core mechanic. It looks like they tried to cover up this wart by... removing city maps.

JasSmith,

I’ve been following this from the perspective of iOS and iPhones. In effect this will enable one to:

  • Install any software without prejudice or gates. Apple cannot, for example, require developers to register with Apple, or pay them a fee.

  • Install any app store and choose to make it default.

  • Use third party payment providers and choose to make them default.

  • Use any voice assistant and choose to make it default.

  • User any browser and browser engine and choose to make it default.

  • Use any messaging app and choose to make it default.

  • Make core messaging functionality interoperable. They lay out concrete examples like file transfer.

  • Use existing hardware and software features without competitive prejudice. E.g. NFC.

  • Not preference their services. This includes CTAs in settings to encourage users to subscribe to Gatekeeper services, and ranking their own services above others in selection and advertising portals.

  • Much, much, more.

It’s one of the most impressive, most expansive pieces of technology focused legislation in my lifetime. They’ve really done a great job of covering all bases.

I expect these to be available next month when the latest version of iOS drops. The deadline is in February/March. If they don’t get this out the door soon, they risk 20% of global revenue as a fine. It would be foolish to wait until the deadline as any issues with deployment would risk the fine, and the EU is eager make an example.

JasSmith,

This is many decades in the making. From useless infrastructure projects, to artificially deflating the yuan, to rampant IP theft, to making CEOs disappear, to destroying the entire IT sector, to fake economic figures, to crazy regional incentive models, to major corruption, to very restrictive foreign capital rules, and one of the worst looming demographic crises in the entire world. They're so racist and xenophobic they'll never be able to plug the gap with immigration either. Xi is reversing decades of Deng's economic reforms, and looks set to return China to Mao's policies. We have history to inform us of the likely outcome.

The good news for the West is that they've done such a good job of building an insular economy that even if all exports to China stopped today, it would barely move the market. Further, if they have a recession or depression, it will cut energy and food prices for us, reducing inflationary pressures. China is not a good world citizen. They pose a material threat to Taiwan, Tibet, millions of Uyghur muslims, and their neighbours. They champion authoritarianism, corruption, violence, and torture as means for power. I will not cry when they are weakened.

JasSmith,

I used to frequent a Szechuan noodle place. Those fucking noodles would melt my face off and give me lava shits 45 minutes later, but I couldn't stay away.

JasSmith,

Great. Racism is bad and we should stamp it out wherever we find it. I find the punditry around this one troubling. As though white people can't experience racism.

JasSmith,

I'm not sure what people want, exactly. 20 years of occupation wasn't enough to change their culture even a little bit. Do they want permanent American occupation? That's clearly untenable for many reasons. I don't want America to be the world police, and I don't want them invading countries on moral grounds.

Any aid given to Afghanistan immediately ends up in the hands of the Taliban now.

Group of up to 50 people shoplift about $100K worth of luxury items from L.A. mall; used bear spray against guards (www.nbcnews.com)

Between 30 to 50 people swarmed the Nordstrom at the Westfield Topanga Mall in Woodland Hills, making off with thousands of dollars worth of luxury handbags and high-end clothing, an LAPD spokesman told NBC News.

JasSmith,

“I’m poor so I’m not responsible for stealing luxury goods and bear spraying minimum wage security guards.”

I grew up poor. I didn’t do this. Your comment is dripping with the implicit accusation that poor people are basically just animals. Incapable of controlling themselves when they see nice handbags.

Tesla exaggerated EV range so much that drivers thought cars were broken (www.reuters.com)

Tesla has consistently exaggerated the driving range of its electric vehicles, reportedly leading car owners to think something was broken when actual driving range was much lower than advertised. When these owners scheduled service appointments to fix the problem, Tesla canceled the appointments because there was no way to...

JasSmith,

I guess we add this to the pile of complaints about Tesla.

The real takeaway here for me is that if you make an amazing product, you can treat your customers any way you like. They'll keep buying. Despite all of these complaints, their output is parabolic. They're not just up YoY, they're even up QoQ. In other words, their Q1 2023, which is typically the slowest auto sales period, just beat Q4 2022, which is typically the highest volume period. Their most recent market announcement for Q2 shows 466,140 deliveries; up from 422,875 in Q1. That's 9% QoQ for an auto company. They now command 4.46% of the entire US auto market. An EV company. Not only is their total auto market share increasing, but their EV market share is increasing as well. This despite almost every major auto manufacturer entering the market with a century of auto making experience, and the supply chains to match.

JasSmith,

I’ve been watching this channel about a Canadian couple moving to a little village in Japan. The locals have been very welcoming. They’re renting a home from a local who were apparently very happy to have them.

I’m sure small town attitudes happen. They happen everywhere. I’m just not sure Japan is uniquely bad.

JasSmith,

I agree. The real change will be from 1 July onwards since none of us can use our apps anymore.

JasSmith,
  1. She uses words like "microaggression" repeatedly, so she's practiced at finding offense where there isn't any.

  2. She's American, so she's ignorant of foreign cultures and believes hers is superior. Anyone who doesn't conform is an "ist".

  3. Her German is weak. Many Germans do not speak English. She complains about having to take lessons.

  4. She moved to a small town and complained about small town problems. In small towns, people speak even less English, and are even less used to foreigners. Public transport is less accessible.

  5. Complains about Amazon delivery taking too long.

This is the most American whinge I've ever read.

JasSmith,

They weren’t forced to reopen. They were threatened with being replaced. Who gives a shit? One can’t even call this cowardly. Who fears losing an unpaid job? This is just pathetic. So much for solidarity. The r/Videos mod team called this from the beginning. They’re prepared to go down with the ship. Of course this would be the natural outcome of a prolonged strike. This is really separating the performative virtue signalling from those who care.

JasSmith, (edited )

Is lemmy.ml just a tankie recruitment zone?

Yes. Check out the comments on this meta post. They ban people for "orientalism" and "sinophobia," meaning "talking poorly about China." I was banned because I criticised the Lemmy developer and owner of Lemmy.ml, Dessalines, for denying the Uyghur genocide. Check out the exchange below. You'll notice that many of the comments and users support China, claim no genocide is occurring, deny the Tiananmen Square Massacre, and even claim China is a democracy. Dessalines has been curating a communist community over there for years. He's just careful to hide that during signup.

That said, just because one instance is terrible doesn't mean all other instances are terrible. kbin.social is awesome. Lemmy.world is awesome. There are lots of instances you can interact with which have nothing to do with communism.

JasSmith,

I wouldn’t even call this cowardly because who fears losing an unpaid job? This is just pathetic.

Can I see which instances kbin.social has blocked?

As I learn more about Lemmy and ActivityPub, I learn that the owners of each instance can dramatically shape our entire experience by blocking other instances. For example, beehaw.org blocks hundreds of other instances, while lemmy.world blocks only one. This is visible by scrolling to the bottom of the page on each instance and...
