LanternEverywhere,

Russia's like "Dude shut up! Don't publicly announce that we make backroom deals with each other!"

gregorum,

as an appliance salesperson at a well-known home-improvement retailer, i do just about whatever i can to stop people from buying Samsung appliances. They’re garbage. They overstuff their appliances with way too much unnecessary tech that nobody wants, and in order to keep the costs from being astronomical, they cut on build quality. Countless customers come in to replace Samsung appliances that failed far before their expected lifespan, often breaking within the first few years.

you want reliable? go with LG or GE. Whirlpool is also pretty decent.

LanternEverywhere,

It's not valid. Peach is labeled 77% but occupies 20% of the pie.

This chart with these labels is definitely invalid. The dataset it's based on is coherent, but the labeled pie chart is invalid

Empricorn,

This is tough. If it was just a sicko who generated the images for himself locally… that is the definition of a victimless crime, no? And it might actually dissuade him from seeking out real CSAM…

BUT, iirc he was actually distributing the material, and even contacted minors, so… yeah he definitely needed to be arrested.

But, I’m still torn on the first scenario…

Image-generating AI is capable of generating images that are not like anything that was in its training set.

AI and Robots Are Automating the IVF Process: Here's How It's Already Helped 11 Women Get Pregnant (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

Hopeful parents who continue to struggle with infertility have found an unlikely ally in Science and the advancements of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) as a laboratory in Guadalajara, Mexico harnesses the power of Artificial Intelligence and robotics to help streamline the IVF process.

I only skimmed the article, but it didn’t seem to define what is meant by “AI” and that trend frustrates me to no end.

The NYPD's Public Relations Staff has More Than Doubled in the Past Two Years (nysfocus.com)

In a statement, Brooklyn Councilmember Lincoln Restler pointed to the contrast between the dcpi’s staffing surge and Mayor Eric Adams’s cuts to other city services, including hundreds of layoffs in the Department of Buildings. “It’s stunning to see the nypd Communications Department more than double to 86 staff while so...

Lessons in headline engineering

Another possible headline was "At Morehouse, Biden says dissent should be heard because democracy is 'still the way'" or another "Biden tells Morehouse graduates that scenes in Gaza from the Israel-Hamas war break his heart, too"

Outside of the ceremony, a small number of protestors gathered while the commencement itself did not see any major disruptions.

Last week, Morehouse College President David Thomas said he would rather halt proceedings than have students escorted away for protesting.

"If my choice is 20 people being arrested on national TV on the Morehouse campus, taken away in zip ties during our commencement, before we would reach that point, I would conclude the ceremony," he said on NPR's Weekend Edition.

But, none of that happened -- either halting the ceremony or tackling or pepper spraying any of the people who were draped in Palestinian flags or turning their chairs around.

DeAngelo Fletcher, Morehouse College's valedictorian, closed his address to his classmates by addressing global conflict, particularly the Israel-Hamas war.

"For the first time in our lives, we've heard the global community sing one harmonious song that transcends language and culture," he said. "It is my sense as a Morehouse Man, nay – as a human being – to call for an immediate and a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip."

IDK how much more pro Palestinian than that he got, and it sorta sounds like "both sides." But whatever. Anyway apparently Biden stood up and shook his hand after. Here's the whole video; Biden's part starts at around 1:43:30. Comparing the tenor of the thing if you take a look at it firsthand, against the tenor that's created from reading this particular headline, is a good little window on what they were trying to do by writing the headline that way (i.e. not to inform about what happened), and what ozma was trying to do by posting it here.

I don't actually think it matters all that much what anybody says about Gaza. Biden stopping the weapons shipments, pushing for an immediate cease fire and humanitarian aid, and supporting an ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu would be a good start. I think mostly this commencement speech is notable in that, hey look, (1) there was protest and it was ok (2) you can make things sound way different depending on which aspects you present in the media coverage.

Jimmyeatsausage,

Because, through science, we are constantly improving our understanding of the world, including our bodies. Sometimes, that means things we used to think were safe or acceptable no longer are. We used to shit in buckets and throw it out the window in the morning right next to where the butcher was carving up a carcass on the street. We used to have parties when a kid got sick, so all the kids in the neighborhood got sick at the same time. Recently, we learned more about the impact of the compounds released and their concentrations when we burn natural gas in a confined area.

My understanding is that, while we knew about the compounds released by gas stoves, we either didn’t know how high the concentrations were or didn’t know enough about the dangers those concentrations could present. Of course, the reactionaries blow it out of proportion and a statement like “Gas stoves might not be safe without adequate ventilation” becomes “THEY’RE GONNA TAKE YOUR STOVE BY FORCE” just like how “cattle produce a lot more greenhouse gases than we thought” became “THEY’RE MAKING BURGERS ILLEGAL!”

Trump Demands Biden Take a Drug Test Before Debating and Claims the President Was ‘High as a Kite’ During the State of the Union (www.mediaite.com)

“I just wanna debate this guy, but you know– and I’m gonna demand a drug test too, by the way,” Trump said as the audience cheered. “I am. No, I really am. I don’t want him coming in like the State of the Union. He was high as a kite.”

ReallyActuallyFrankenstein,

This was a pretty predictable comment, given that (1) Trump himself has long been alleged to snort Adderall and take other stimulants, and (2) Trump always, without fail, accuses his enemies of exactly what he is already doing.
