Moogly, to RedditMigration in Inside Reddit's path to an IPO, where employees see 'thrash' from constant pivots and say more managers may leave amid a flattening

am I wrong in thinking that the users are the product and advertisers the customer?

I think there was/is a monetization route through the use of user data (probably why they’re pushing their app so much) as well as using all the data for things like language AI modeling.

But on that last one it seems like the biggest players such as openAI and Microsoft already scraped their site freely. Not sure if they’ve missed a big chunk of that opportunity by now

I have developed the impression, and it’s mostly just my hunch not so much evidence based - spez and co are kind of kicking themselves for being oblivious to the AI training rush and failing to monetize on it. Probably didn’t even realize it was happening until we all did via crazy headlines showing up in news about what AI could do. That kind of thing may lead to kneejerk decisions on api access

Moogly, to betterment in Mixed feelings about giving money to houseless people

I give a lot tbh I’d say like ~10-20% my income a month. But that’s not all straight cash I will also buy people food, clothes, stuff their kids need, etc. but I do give people money a lot and I know it’s going to cigs/drugs. I don’t care what they spend it on.

I’m not giving them money for any specific reason I come up with, I’m giving them money so they have agency. The same freedom I have by having some extra cash, to do just whatever I feel I need to with; that’s all I actually want to extend to them. I think that personal agency is worth a lot and I don’t judge we all get our breaks in different ways.

I used to be an addict and was homeless for a long time. I spent a while at a rehab clinic and it was all free because of community volunteer and donation efforts. I appreciated that a lot and have been big on community shit ever since. Donating and volunteering and all that since I think it does make a difference on a small scale. And occasionally some bigger things you can do can straight up enable someone to change their life for the better

Moogly, to nostupidquestions in What are you doing today on July 4th?

Work then I’m gonna take a walk and watch fireworks around town. Then get online and look for firework accident videos, as is tradition

Moogly, to askscience in If photons don’t ‘experience time’ how do they experience space?

If things like proton decay and black hole evaporation wind up all being true there could be a universe of nothing but radiation I think

Moogly, to askscience in If photons don’t ‘experience time’ how do they experience space?

I’ve read about this but it kind of loses me since it’s such an abstract model of what’s going on. It treats each dimension as equal but like, time certainly seems distinct from the 3 spatial dimensions too.

I know it’s legit and a proper way of understanding it though just nitpicking since it leaves me with a sense of fuzziness like, maybe a gross oversimplification?

Granted I know it’s only meant to explain what’s happening in a predictable way not actually address the nature of these values which I guess is what I naturally lead into wondering about

Moogly, to askscience in If photons don’t ‘experience time’ how do they experience space?

Yeah I figure “experience” is sort of ambiguous and pop science-y, but it’s how I’ve usually had it explained.

That redshift depends on the observer is obvious now that you point it out and profound too since yeah, I suppose they’re not developing across space in the way I imagined.

This makes me wonder about a potential universe with nothing except photons/radiation in it. They’d just.. never change? Even though they could do things like affect spacetime they pass through or interfere with eachother?

Moogly, to airplants in (Question) Growing Spanish moss inside?

I suppose it would depend on your humidity indoors and if they get exposed to spores. I’ve never had any problems growing it indoors with just your typical room humidity. I’m pretty mindful in keeping an eye out for rogue mushrooms getting in plants but I don’t think it’s ever been a problem

Moogly, to RedditMigration in 3rd party app for Reddit, Boost, is still functioning well after July 1st

Traffic quality plays a big role too. If you never click on or engage with any ads your visits aren’t worth much anyway. You could even vpn yourself from a poor country and be considered even less valuable to the ad machines lol

Moogly, to RedditMigration in 3rd party app for Reddit, Boost, is still functioning well after July 1st

It’d be a preferable situation if it were either/or but even then I realize I’m probably not big and bad enough to strong arm myself into that position everyone else would rather have.

Spez is/was a doomsday prepper though I think he figures he’s got an edge over everyone else

Moogly, to politics in There's no such thing as a conservative intellectual — only apologists for right-wing power

I’d like to hear how anyone reconciles Republican policy with actually being conservative. They seem like they’re at odds to me and Republican policy is often radical and extreme

Moogly, to politics in There's no such thing as a conservative intellectual — only apologists for right-wing power

Add in a constant effort to trap you in a “gotcha” moment (typically built on some weird binary logic) that they think is the end all of the discussion and it’s so spot on

Moogly, to politics in There's no such thing as a conservative intellectual — only apologists for right-wing power

The most honest answer you’ll get is from some fucked up tweaker that is too gone to hide their unabashed racism and hate of people they share a community with and see every day. “I hate those __” is as clear as it can ever get and I think it’s consistent

Moogly, to politics in There's no such thing as a conservative intellectual — only apologists for right-wing power

Oh man, it’s like it’s all around you, huh? Almost like it’s everywhere you look except for carefully curated right wing safe spaces. I wonder why?

Moogly, to politics in There's no such thing as a conservative intellectual — only apologists for right-wing power

Either way, you can't have an intelectual discussion within the framework of two party political system and most Americans can't get over this hurdle.

I think you can when you reduce the parties to progressivism and conservativism. Aka change vs do not change. But in the us we have conservatives claiming that label while crying for systemic changes at the same time.

So I think we can have a discussion in this framework but first we have to un-muddy what labels we assign to which ideologies and we categorize people appropriately. But these people can’t even categorize themselves so it’s a real mess. The current sides as they’re commonly laid out don’t seem like the actual sides in real life imo

And honestly I think the most straight forward way to frame it right now is authoritarian vs not on many social issues

Moogly, to politics in There's no such thing as a conservative intellectual — only apologists for right-wing power

You… know it's possible to be a conservative without being a Republican, right?

Well yeah, I’d even say Republican policy is at contradictory with current popular conservative rhetoric. I think we’ve muddied these terms up too much in the us.

To any conservative though I think my most simple question is, what is it specifically they want to conserve? They don’t have small and limited government, and we never have? What about the status quo is so appealing if we can all admit there are major problems? It’s like even “conservatives” are saying significant changes need to be made and that’s just convoluted lol. I think “Republican” is so unpopular of a label among the youth that they have to hide behind other labels like “conservative” and “libertarian” even when it makes no sense
