The US-led Military Buildup in Australia Is Like Nothing We’ve Seen Before

I think anyone who lived through WW2 would beg to differ.

Pons_Aelius,

Cool. One less website to visit. Not like there is a shortage.

Pons_Aelius,

Is the one on the left an ACD-beagle cross?

The west spent 30 years bending over backwards placating Russia in an attempt to get their leaders to grow the fuck up and join the west.

And Putin saw this as nothing but weakness.

Well, those days are now dead and Vlad has condemned Russia to at least a generation as an outcaste state.

Pons_Aelius,

Not a fan of current trends in YouTube thumbnails.

There is a FF extension called DeArrow:

The goal of DeArrow is to make titles accurate and reduce sensationalism.

Titles can be any arbitrary text. Thumbnails are screenshots from specific timestamps in the video. These are user submitted and voted on.

Pons_Aelius,

If you are willing to, firstly thanks, maybe contact ernest direct to see it he is ok with it.

Pons_Aelius,

Does automod exist on the fediverse yet?

Not that I know of, then again, I don't know much about the backend of the fediverse.

Pons_Aelius,

Cheers for that. I know we are still in the baby steps phase here and the effort is appreciated.

Pons_Aelius,

There is a big difference between:

Company giving an access code to the FBI when legally required.

Access codes are common knowledge and can be obtained by any person who want to take your guns.

Pons_Aelius, (edited )

Every safe manufacturer, digital or otherwise, will assist the FBI in opening their products when legally required.

Liberty Safes' name sounds like some decent marketing to rope in the 2A crowd but that is all it is.

If you can buy it in the USA, the FBI can open it.

Pons_Aelius,

Now you realise that gun safes are not that safe.

They are like barb wire on a battle field. They will slow down an attack but cannot prevent it.

If someone has physical access to a safe, you have already lost.

The safest way to keep a firearm is for no one to know it exists.

That’s really cool until someone else uses the manufacturer’s backdoor.

So what is the backdoor code for liberty safes?

There is a big difference between:

These have been around for at least a decade.

It’ll be on Olem in a year most likely.

So why isn't it already on Olem?

And back to my main point:

Now you realise that gun safes are not that safe.

You are on lemmy... you should know that no physical security can stop a determined attacker if they have physical access to the device.

You are on lemmy.... How did you not know that this is common practise?

Pons_Aelius,

Am i the arsehole type subs on reddit have been creative writing hubs for a few years now. A place of trolls to cut their teeth and hone their craft. So I seriously doubt any of this actually happened.

Pons_Aelius,

The sad part is that still as likely to be a long term troll account as it is to reflect any personal reality.

Pons_Aelius,

The trailier has it backwards. Retarded started as medical term (as did idiot) and then moved into popular usage.

From wikkipedia:

It was previously used as a medical term. The verb "to retard" means to delay or hold back, and so "retard" became known as a medical term in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to describe children with intellectual disabilities, or retarded mental development.[5] Until the 1960s, the terms moron, idiot, cretin, and imbecile were all genuine, non-offensive terms used, including by psychiatrists, to refer to people with mental intellectual disabilities and low intelligence. These words were discontinued in that form when concerns arose that they had developed negative meanings, with "retard" and "retarded" replacing them.[6][7] After that, the terms "handicapped" (United States) and "disabled" (United Kingdom) replaced "retard" and "retarded". Disabled is now considered a more polite term than handicapped in the United States as well.

TLDR:

Retard, moron, idiot, cretin, and imbecile were all once medical terms that morphed into slurs when adopted in general usage.

$100 says there is a series of emails sent by a sysadmin/DBA over the past couple months warning about this issue in explicit detail and its increasing urgency, that have been ignored.

The person sending the emails will still get chewed out because they failed to make the higher ups realise this is a real problem.

Pons_Aelius,

While that story is shitty I doubt the manufacturing control DB and customer data DB are anywhere near each other.

That takes my award for the worst use of the beasty boys ever,

Zero similarity between the action on screen and the tone of the song.

[News] AI might be coming for your relationship, too (theface.com)

The article discusses the growing trend of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) features in dating apps. These features range from sophisticated matchmaker tools to chatbots that assist in crafting messages. The goal is to make the dating experience more efficient and streamlined, ultimately leading to quicker connections....

Pons_Aelius, (edited )

An article about LLMs about to make dating apps even more shit, that is summarised by another LLM.

Well, if this isn't peak LLM Hype bullshit, I don't know what is.

I worked on the 3G roll out for a national telco, video calls were the major focus of the marketing and branding message.

Whether Gen 1 3G was ever capable of delivering on that message is a totally different topic. For a recent example see the messaging vs reality around FB metaverse.
