Has anyone experienced their prolonged anxiety just kind of disappearing? Stopped waking up anxious?

For Duolingo (app version) expats who are willing to pay ~$5 a month Chegg’s language learning app called Busuu has a similarly convenient app interface but does a MUCH better job teaching grammar in my opinion. I’m learning German and Infinitives were so confusing to try to pick up just using context clues on Duo. I’d tried a couple of the other free options (memrise, lingodeer, the old desktop version of Rosetta Stone) and I think Busuu is the most effective/efficient I’ve tried.

Disclaimer that I was with Duo in the early days when they were still supported by startup money and promising NO ADS EVER. FREE ACCESS FOR ALL, so I am admittedly still a little butt hurt that they moved in the direction they did.

Dio,

I had a feeling Busuu was better and it is grand to know someone else feels similar. I too used Duolingo for English for years and out of curiosity, tried Busuu earlier this year and noticed a better learning difference.

ReallyKinda,

@Dio I hadn’t heard much about it so figured I’d post to the void!

I also like that they have both a vocab and grammar practice section that keeps track of your weak, medium, and strong words and grammar topics.

The main thing I don’t like is that their free version is quite buggy and you have to close out ads for premium every few prompts.

vv late, but I’m quite struck by* the fact that the main character in Poker Face is so smart with such bad judgement. I feel like they almost always write smart characters to be quite situationally competent.

Is it possible to have RSS content automatically post to a kbin magazine? If so, how?

If I wait for my face to be completely dry before applying tretinoin (which is recommended practice afaik) my moisturizer (which is recommended to be applied on damp skin) will not be able to trap much moisture in. How do other tret users navigate this conundrum?

bookworm,

A lot of people prefer to use tretinoin after their moisturizer. It can reduce irritation from the tretinoin while in theory not reducing its effectiveness. Just remember to wait 30 minutes inbetween applications! You can google “tretinoin sandwich method” if you wanna learn more about it.

akrz,

I’ve been loving the Caudalie grape water lately.

If Facebook made their content compatible with activity feed could I potentially subscribe and interact with (for example) my dad’s posts only so that I can keep up with family without having to visit (or have a) Facebook myself?

That would depends entirely on how they implemented it

It’s technically possible, but I put the chance of it happening at 0.1%. I don’t even see them (properly/fully) implementing ActivityPub in Threads.

If my dental insurance has 100% coinsurance on preventative and basic care, 70% coinsurance on major care, a deductible of $50, and a maximum payout of $2000, does that mean I can only spend the insurance $ on major services and pay out of pocket for everything else?

compg318,

I work in a healthcare adjacent field but even half my coworkers would probably still have difficulty answering these questions so take what I say as a hopeful truth.

Yes you would be correct. And your major care the insurance will only pay 30% of, up to $2000. To hit that max coverage amount you’d have to have a total cost of $6,666.66 and you’d owe out of pocket $4,666.66. (I actually just realized I forgot the $50 deductible but numbers are close enough).

Also for major care, many dental plans (less obvious when through an employer but still possible) there may be a waiting period to use those benefits such as 6-18 months. This is to prevent someone from getting insurance, using it immediately for the benefit, and then cancelling (or even if not cancelling, they just don’t want someone who knows they have a large procedure coming up to sign up just to save $).

To be honest that plan doesn’t sounds great and I’m shocked preventive isn’t fully covered or at least covered with a deductible. If it’s an option i’d do the math to see if it’s worth just saving the premiums and paying outright. Additionally many dental practices will negotiate discounts for cash payments.

Edit: Also thanks for the inspiration to write my first Lemmy comment. I don’t usually feel I have something unique to offer but this excited me!

substill,

Yeah, about the only benefit you’re getting here is the insurer’s negotiated discount with dentists.

How to view a feed of subscriptions only? I’ve gone into the settings and chosen the homepage drop-down that says subscriptions and saved. I’ve also chosen “subscribed ” under the drop-down next to my name in the top right while on the Home Screen. Neither seem to impact what shows up in my feed. Help?

ReallyKinda,

I’ve found my issue! Early on I must have subscribed to some entire instances without understanding what I was doing. This causes communities that you’re not subscribed to individually to show in your subscriptions feed (since you’re subscribed to the entire instance). Leaving up in case it helps others troubleshoot.

I found the neat visual customization options (color, rounded corners, etc) but the changes don’t seem to stick! Is this a me thing or kbin thing?

@ReallyKinda It uses cookies and so is per-browser - but they are retained for a long time. I've not seen them disappear.

ReallyKinda,

@VerifiablyMrWonka
Ohh that would explain it, thanks! I use a browser that’s…quite light on cookie permissions.

ULPT: Post job ads in your area for jobs similar to the one you have(or are looking for) at your desired salary.

This way if your employer checks to see if your wage is competitive it will look like they should give you a raise in order to retain you.

That’s smart.

dunidane,

You can also reply to any recruiter who reaches out on LinkedIn that their salary is below your expected value.

How do you guys celebrate personal wins while being sensitive to those in your circles who might struggle with that area?

For example, posting your ab gains when friends struggle with weight loss, posting about children when friends struggle with fertility, posting about your WFH gig when friends are working 70 hour weeks.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yup, you are not an influencer to your friends. Friends see you through thick and thin, they'll hear the good and the bad, which is why celebrating the good is okay.

Nobody wants the friend who only talks about themselves and how awesome it is being them.

and make sure to routinely ask them how they're doing, make sure you're caring for them too.

auken,

@ReallyKinda I wrote a longer reply that I lost with the message "language not allowed" but I don't know why.

Basically in my mastodon instance we use content warnings for everything, as a sort of email header with a collapsed post underneath. So even "food", " plants", just as a filter that allows people to skip things as needed. It has the added benefit of letting me post "exercise gains" and anyone can skip uncollapsing if they want to, for whatever reason. Then those who want to engage with the post can do so, more deliberately.
