I have travelled for very little money in the past, hitchhiking my way around, sleeping behind gas stations or in nature, or utilizing sites like Couchsurfing where people can host you for free (in exchange for cultural exchange). I've crossed all of Europe and into the Balkans this way, as well as went up and around the western states in the US. While I realize this isn't the most fun way to travel for many (but for me it is!), travelling is still doable on a very low budget if you know how to travel and prioritize the concept of travel before your own comfort. I've done a lot of regular backpacking as well. Of course, the situation complicates itself if you're from the US, have a family, lots of student loans or health care debt to pay off, and have very little PTO. In Sweden at least, as with many other countries in Europe, we have a minimum of 5 weeks PTO. And either way, it's customary for people between high school and university to go on a gap year travelling the world.

With some proper budgeting and staying at hostels, or doing things like Worldpackers where you volunteer at hostels for room and sometimes food, you can travel the world for $10-15k per year easily. If you only do half a year or whatever, it's really not that much money if you prioritize travelling and saving up before other stuff. For some it might still be a lot of money, but it must cost something if you want to go for such a length of time. Otherwise you'll just have to become a busker and a vagabond, hitchhiking around. Australia even has a working holiday-visa for 1-3 years up til the age of 31 that is very popular for people to go on, where people work odd jobs in agriculture and what not, often with accommodation included and very good pay (even if the work can be tough), which then is used to continue travelling.

For the guy in the video, biking around is quite cheap compared to flying and whatnot. If you're camping by yourself, your only expense is food, if you've done off with all the other obligations in life like rent and loans. This means you can do it very, very cheap as well. I don't know his situation, but he probably sold off everything else, gave up his place or rented it out. Travelling that way inherently means some risk-taking. And for many people it's worth it.

Not everyone is American with 1 week PTO and horrendous health care debts or student loans to pay off. I've seldom met travellers with a trust fund. And I don't have a trust fund myself, nor have received loads of money from parents to fund my travels. This is just such a bullshit answer that always pops up.

It definitely feels broken. There are still huge amounts of contents and comments not showing up. I posted about this the other day, and the answer that it was working as intended, but there's just too much content missing for it to feel true. I can go to !technology, and see a post with 50+ comments on beehaw.org, but Kbin only shows 3. If that post is even on here.

TotK didn't deserve the Switch. It's crazy that the Switch, based on 10 year old hardware at this point, is still relevant and something that Nintendo feels comfortable selling for a foreseeable future. TotK will probably run better on an emulator very soon.

General takeaway is: letting your kids be enamored by mr beast is teaching them to get clout. Teaches them that to do nice things, they must be recording themselves doing it. Its different if youre an adult that can think for themself

“If i cant record myself helping this person out then ill wait till i can find a camera.” Theres a good chance thats the type of thing your kids are gonna unconsciously think about.

Ehhhh. He engages in a mix of pity porn and charity-as-self-promotion/criticism shield. Never trust a wealthy person's donations when they have their name attached to them; there's always a reasonable chance that they came with strings. Doubly so when those donations are to charities they actively control.

I can appreciate that he's funnelled his money into things people actually need, instead of into grants so charities can buy supplies from tech companies he's invested in, but it's still PR, not philanthropy.

Most replies here are correct. To clarify and summarize:

1. The source of truth for a magazine/community is the server name that appears after the magazine name.

e.g. kbinMeta@kbin.social <--- the source of truth is kbin.social.
2. ActivityPub and the Fediverse is a "Push" model. What does this mean?

Imagine subscribing to a real-world newspaper or magazine with home delivery(few these days will actually remember this, but try to imagine at least). You will get all new issues delivered to you from the moment you became a subscriber, but you don't get copies of all the newspapers or magazines they have ever printed delivered to you. You only get things moving forward. That's the same with the Fediverse. After you subscribe or follow something, you will get all the new content moving forward, but not what has been created so far.

3. To extend #2, it's a "push once" model. What does that mean? It means that if I create content from my instance (which is not kbin.social) to the magazine kbinMeta@kbin.social, my content will get pushed to kbin.social. Kbin.social, however, will not "re-push" that content to everyone that kbin.social knows is subscribed to the magazine.

So how does my new content that I created in kbinMeta@kbin.social show up on other instances that are not kbin.social? I thought you said your content only gets pushed once?

Correct. However, it's not quite as simple as my instance pushing just to kbin.social. Strictly speaking, (and this is based on experience with other platforms, not specifically how kbin works since I haven't verified this for kbin 100%) when I create the content, my instance will push to kbin.social and all other instances (not users) that my instance knows are also subscribed to specifically kbinMeta@kbin.social. So my instance actually knows a subset of the instances that are subscribed to kbinMeta@kbin.social and will push the new content to each of those other instances. My instance, however, won't necessarily know all the other instances that are subscribed to kbinMeta@kbin.social. As a result, some instances won't see my new content because it wasn't pushed to them.

3. As a result, to let users know about this potential gap, not only does it mean that older content doesn't automatically show up, it also means that not necessarily all new content will show up either.

Note on #3: I haven't fully verified this. This statement is based on how other, non-kbin instances handle federation. This is how "likes" work across platforms like Mastodon, Calckey, etc. I see no evidence (yet) that this is any different for kbin.

I've noticed that sometimes new threads from federated magazines sometimes don't show up for me in Kbin, as well as older ones. I think there may be some sort of syncing issue that causes that, perhaps Kbin refreshes data from other instances at set intervals or something.

Edit: ok, I think I get it. So if someone from a random instance posts to e.g., technology@beehaw.org, and that instance doesn't know about kbin.social, it won't get pushed to this instances representation of the technology@beehaw.org magazine?

Correct. It's only "pushed once" by the instance that the creator's account is on. Of course it will push to the source of truth, but it will only push to other instances it knows are also following that magazine since it doesn't necessarily know all of the instances that follow that magazine. In your example, yes, if the creator of the content (which in this example is an account not on beehaw.org) posts to technology@beehaw.org, their instance will push to beehaw.org and others, but if it doesn't know that kbin.social has any followers of the magazine/community, it won't push to kbin.social.

One other possibility is that the 3rd-party instance does know about kbin.social (for example), but has blocked (defederated with) kbin.social OR kbins.social has blocked that 3rd-party instance, my expectation would be that such content won't show up on kbin.social's "copy" of the community.

If you build a linguistics magazine I will join :) I think the thing to do is pick the subject you're most passionate about/ most knowledgable about and create a magazine for it. The issue everyone is facing right now is we are expecting to immediately shift to a ready made alternative for Reddit in less than 2 weeks.

I mean Reddit happened over a course of 15 years. At least. Expecting to replicate the same diversity and engagements within 2 weeks is too much.

Right now the community is in ‘move house’ mode with lots of activity and excitement. It will all come to a calm once the shift is complete and we are all in our new home.

Then in the next few days… We will start hanging pictures and arranging the countertops(aka adding niche subs and improving engagements).
