Most Fediverse software supports image uploads, so there's no reason to use Imgur for image hosting. Hell, even on my small single-user server (atomicpoet.org), image hosting is easy peasy. Not only is Imgur not needed, they're an annoyance for those of us who are used to seeing images natively on the Fediverse....
Before the latest kbin UI refresh there was an issue where the magazine logo's aspect ratio was altered and the pictures looked squished, but that was easy to fix using some CSS....
Imgur have quite recently blocked my VPN (privately hosted, not mainstream). They don't like non-domestic IPs accessing their service it appears. I fear the only way to fix this is not to attempt to pull and cache imgur images :(
If you click on the "more" button under a comment or link there will be an activity tab. In this tab you can see everyone who has boosted, favourited or reduced the post. I'm not sure if this a...
Of course a bad actor can set up their own instance and just create thousands of fake bot accounts and do the same.
A competent admin would then just defederate from them. Easy. But now throw in that all kbin instances look like bot fests and what do you do? Maybe what lemmy.ml have done and just block kbin useragents at the firewall.
Having an aggregate account that just sends totals could work, but then vote brigading just became even easier. What's that aggregate bot? Did you just send a vote ratio of 300:1.9k for this comment? Lovely.
It's a very hard problem to solve and I'm not sure it's doable. The only thing keeping ActivityPub together is the fact that it's so transparent and bad actors are easily spotted and blocked. As soon as you muddy the waters the primary benefactor is the bad person.
So what happens with 300 people downvote a post and 500 upvote it? For that to work you'd need an 'account' per post/vote/user combination. Now your instance has 1000's of bot accounts that are now indistinguishable from bad vote manipulation.
ActivityPub broadcasts all these activity types. It's how it works. You can't federate these things without, well, federating them.
@ernest how do I report a Magazin on kbin.social ? There is a usere called "ps" who is posting to his own "antiwoke" Magazin on kbin.social. It has an option to always show what instance communities and users originate from.
If the concept of federation is confusing or daunting why would having it be more visible help? Genuine question.
Sign up, browse stuff, comment on stuff, curate your feed by subbing, all the other details are just noise.
Caveat: Unless you're on a small instance that isn't aware of the communities you might want. But let's face it, if the concept of federation is confusing you you probably didn't join some micro instance hosted by your mate Joe.
After the (temporary) defederation announcement of earlier i checked the Lemmy repo to see if there was already a ticket on the federation limiting option like Mastodon's that people mentioned Lemmy doesn't yet have. Not only i didn't find it, i also saw that there's about 200+ open tickets of variable importance. Also saw that...

He's apparently found some people to help with the infra side of things - which is the hardest thing to do. This means more focus on improving the product. :D
Yeah. I have a concern that because of the length of time it's been down we'll be seeing bigger than normal fragmentation of communities.
It's already the case that the previous "big" communities from places like beehaw.org and lemmy.ml have been replaced by KBin ones meanin that going forward this instance may be hosting the greater number - which isn't good for the fediverse.
I'm not sure I understand why "Threads" and "Microblogs" are separate entities in kbin. From my understanding, "Threads" are like Reddit's link/image posts and "Microblogs" are like text posts. Why are these only viewable in separate tabs? It seems like a bad thing to completely separate certain content from the same Magazine and make it unable to view everything at once. Am I misunderstanding something?
@bleuy007 Microblogs are where posts from the wider fediverse show up - generally from Mastodon. As they have no attached information about threading etc a best effort is made to just show them.
Magazine mods can associate hashtags with their magazine and then anything from the fediverse tagged with that ends up showing in that magazines microblog section. This is a great way to bring in a lot of content you can interact with even if it's not in the longform KBin/Lemmy format.

a small difference, but important to how people use the site
