It is fascinating how they have used this evidence to find a place previously considered "fabled".
However, this part of the article absolutely slays me:
The baboon is the only animal not native to Egypt that is linked with Egyptian deities, Kopp said, and it's a little odd that ancient Egyptians took such interest in baboons. They tend to steal crops and break into homes looking for food, making them difficult to live with, she said.
"The people who coexist with baboons don't really like them," Kopp told Live Science.
I just got a comment that was entirely in caps. Usually I don’t like when people write in all caps, but in a comment? Screaming about how much they love the chapter? Yes please!
As for me? Nothing! I'm at a convention this weekend. I'll have a lot of writing to catch up with after it's over! On the other hand, I did submit a couple entries to the fanfic contest at the convention. On Sunday I will learn if I did okay. Wish me luck!
Thanks! Whether I do well in the contest or not, this convention is always loads of fun. I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend! (And as much fandom merchandise as I can afford!)
As uncertain as I am about the technology, people already steal voices from voice actors, singers, and celebrities. At this point I’m just glad these artists gave their permission.
Posting what we write on websites dedicated to writing seems obvious, but do you post your fic on websites that are not dedicated to writing, like social medias? Or do you keep the full fic on its fic site but still post about it elsewhere?...
I've been meaning to repost my work on Pillowfort and Dreamwidth. I've done a few, but I have a lot more to upload on those. I want to do it mainly in case if a site goes down, I will have other places to upkeep.
About my writing? I have my account here on Kbin and a mastodon account. It's hard to post about a lot of the time. I'm more of a lurker most of the time. It is hard to always come up with what to talk about. I've never understood how it could be easy for anyone to post so much. Maybe other people have a lot more going on than me? Then again, I find a lot of posts (even about writing) not as interesting, so I might just not understand this whole system. The posts I see are so specific that it is hard to relate with them. They are from authors I don't read and fandoms I'm not in. I usually try to write about a more general topic, so more people could interact if they wanted to.
I went through cycles of spending time on r/fanfiction (before excising Reddit completely from my life). I appreciated how people writing all sorts of stories in all types of fandoms could relate to most of the topics posted there. I'm hoping this place will cultivate a vibe similar to that. Except including fanart and fan comics, which weren't allowed there for some reason.
Congrats on getting the kinkmeme done! I do love the sense of accomplishment when you complete something on time. :) I know you'll do well on today's prompt! Also in getting started on your friend's fic.
Beauty And Warrior. Bad animation, every young woman looked the same (the brothers too, but maybe they are twins?), bad voice acting, repeating the same bad ”going down the cavern” scene three times, and I still don’t know what anyone’s reason for doing anything was.
It is a hilarious movie to drop on people. Even after telling them how awful it is, everyone is always surprised.
Late last year, a hidden trove of whisky was discovered in a cellar room deep within a 13th century Scottish castle. The liquid was subsequently tested and determined to have been distilled back in 1833, making it the oldest known scotch in existence. Now two dozen bottles of it are going under the hammer in a November auction.
Not a myth, but one of my favorite folktales is the Persian tale of Pumpkin Girl (or Melon Girl). It's about a woman who adopts a crying pumpkin and raises it as her child. At school during lunchtime, a girl sneaks out of the pumpkin to eat in secret. A neighbor's son sees her and falls in love with her. The rest is a Cinderella story, and eventually the pumpkin turns into a girl for good.
I come at this issue from both directions. I am a writer who does not have a beta reader, but I beta read for someone else. I catch a lot of big and small things for the person I'm helping out. They have been very grateful for my assistance. I've beta'd for some other people too. One person cannot catch everything.
Yet I don't have a beta reader. Why? Because it is a lot of work for someone to do. I write what some people might say are long chapters and update often. Finding someone willing to put that time in is rough. Let alone someone able to do so when I need them to?
Having someone else re-read your work is never redundant. I assure you we both miss a lot. You know your story already. Some things will always be a blind spot because of this foreknowledge. I have also gone back to doublecheck something for plot and found an inexcusable grammar mistake which no commenter mentioned. It happens. Nothing is perfect. There is a reason a lot of professional authors say to leave a manuscript lying around for at least a month or so before you go over it again.
Except this is for fun, so I'm not too worried about it. No one is going to crucify me for one wonky sentence or some misplaced grammar. For the most part, fanfic readers don't say anything about your story at all (whether they enjoyed it or not).
I think artists get a lot more feedback than writers, so I can see it. Fortunately I’m not in the fandoms which are most known for attacking if you don’t ship the right people, which transcends the barrier of drawings to words. 🙄
What's up with this weekend, folks? I'm doing the usual. I have a bit of a buffer, but I want to pad it even further if I can in preparation for some upcoming busy times....
I truly admire anyone who can wait until an entire story is finished before putting it up. I like having a buffer, but I don't think I have ever written the entire thing (unless, of course, it is a one-shot) before posting. I think I had six chapters written before first posting my current big story. Recently I had completely run out of buffer, but now I'm back up to three.
Somebody should create something like an action plan of getting #fandom people on fedi... I'm not going to be that person bc project management gives me anxiety but there has to be somebody out there who knows how to do this stuff and actually likes doing it, right?
I would definitely take over some regular tasks as long as I don't have to organize everything...
@ludovica Agreed. Pitching things, unless people are already interested, gives me too much anxiety, but I do wish more #fandom people would interact! Getting fanfic writers and artists to post in my Kbin magazine is like pulling teeth.
The question is how many ideas don't I have? I could list out (at minimum) ten of them. I won't, but I could.
I have a short crack story I wanted to do about Bandori's Roselia, where Yukina is introducing her super cool band, but one of the others does something silly and she has to follow up their ridiculous words/actions with "...and we are Roselia".
I have a YGO oneshot about Atem and the Thief King dealing with the trials of their afterlife on the way to Aaru. It's inspired by the split dream plot in the Doctor Who episode "Amy's Choice".
I've had another Pokémon Nuzlocke story planned for when I finished my last one, but I haven't started writing it yet. This time it takes place in Johto, as I played a randomized version of HeartGold for it. The gameplay itself was rather emotional, so I'm really looking forward to writing it. I... just have to... start. Aaaaaaa
And another Bandori one which is also a sequel to a short series I've written. Each chapter takes place on a character's birthday. Or at least all the major chapters. Considering everything, it means I want to post the first two chapters on March 20th (the twins' birthday), but with as complex as it all is, I don't want to wait until March to get started. I like the intricate idea of a SMT/Persona AU, even if I get very little feedback on such things. XD
Welcome! Glad to see you around. I know I've been busy and this place is generally quiet when I'm not pumping out posts, but I hope you will enjoy this small corner of the internet!
