bioemerl,

You can never totally divest from the fire you started friends. Even if it burns beyond your control.

Does it seem like we’re mixing two concepts, having servers for users and content?

It feels like they’re two different roles. It might be better to have user-orientated servers that prioritise federation of content and only have a couple of meta-style communities, and other servers which prioritise being the go-to place for discussion on a particular topic and less a place that manages a large number of user...

bioemerl,

This would generally suck and result in centralization, especially bad if any of the big communities end up in the hands of people like the lemmy.ml devs.

bioemerl,

The problem is network effects. It's very hard to get mass migration so managers of very large generalized communities can get away with a lot of bullshit when they own the platform uncontested

bioemerl,

Every time China tries this other countries immediately start up their own production and China eventually folds and allows exports again so they can keep the export market. They have nothing here.

bioemerl,

I thought this was about ergonomic keyboards but no it's just some crypto scam bullshit.

bioemerl,

Girl power.

But also power to the genocidal authoritarian state of China.

We have gay characters! We are good people and very progressive.

bioemerl,

Yes, Microsoft exerting this sort of control over their operating system does deeply concern me which is why i switched to Linux and you should too

bioemerl,

It's just so unbelievably nice when it doesn't ask you to use Microsoft edge, and it doesn't pop up web searches when you try to find an application, and it doesn't update without your permission or pop up a screen about how Windows counts are better than local accounts every two weeks.

They've just added up so many small annoyances that when I switch to Lennox it was a genuine breath of fresh air.

And by all means Linux kind of fucking sucks too, but it sucks because of its own technicality riddled advanced user problems. It's hard to update things, they want you to use cuz the command line for half of the stuff you want to do, and it's really easy to screw up your whole install and never be able to get back.

But it's worth it, the annoyances of linux are now worth it over the annoyances of windows and the annoyances of windows are intentional.

bioemerl,

They haven't? Yesterday my computer updated without my permission and started popping up a screen that nags me about how I need to switch to an online Microsoft account in order to continue to use the operating system.

A few weeks ago I tried to disable Windows updates using a test scheduler job and despite being an administrator and going through the command line it told me I do not have the permission to do this.

The restrictions are here and they're getting worse.

bioemerl,

You guys better give some money back to the dev.

bioemerl,

he’d “be a slaver rather than a slave”

Wouldn't you if you were given that decision and it was even or?

It's a stupid world to you because it's never either or, but people like spez rarely have the tact to think that far.

bioemerl,

They aren't profitable currently because of the race to the bottom are free sites funded by cheap venture capital are able to succeed drive out all the ones that actually have sustainable business models.

What's going to happen here in the very near future is the sites that charge you to upload, were you actually have to pay for your usage of the internet are going to pop up and then they will sustain themselves for longer periods of time.

Growth phase is over on the internet,

bioemerl,

I am so happy that I learned to build a habit of saving everything I wanted to keep from the internet over the last couple years. I can't imagine what it would be like if I hadn't saved my history and all these websites started going pop even though they were big names in their day.

I hated this website though, it replaced all of the good gift images that support for software viewing on my phone for tiny short videos which were an absolute pain in the ass to view in line with my other content.

bioemerl,

I doubt it. There's no way one company is inflating the views of a website by a million times. And the users are not going around browsing the internet with Chat GPT in mass. Web scraping is definitely an excuse for them to make these moves, not a reason

bioemerl,

That makes no sense though because Bluetooth doesn't do streaming to multiple devices like that.

I'm tempted to think that most confident answer here is going to be the they can just hear the conversations through the house or whatever.

Or given that the OP talks about these really weird situations that seem kind of off in general, this is fake news or the OP is slowly becoming a parinoid schizophrenic. If they are between the ages of 20 and 25 they need to go talk to a doctor.

bioemerl,

Maximize your upvotes and you basically have a good gauge for what the community wants. If you schedule a post a day, you're going to get the most upvotes probably, but if you're making more than two images a day, you may as well post more or select the best one.
