Wow!

ANALYSIS | Trudeau is leading an activist government — does Poilievre want to do the same? | CBC News (www.cbc.ca)

Broad, multi-party support for the Liberal child care legislation may bode well for the program’s durability. And it can also be read as an implicit endorsement of the Trudeau government’s particular — and muscular —use of the federal spending power.

cyborganism,

Trudeau talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. He's not an activist.

cyborganism,

It's not really a currency inflation. It's artificial inflation created by corporations, especially the grocery market and pharmacy industry, that have blown up their price only because they can and nothing can stop them. Add to this the cost of housing that's out of control and you get a dollar that's worthless within one's own country.

cyborganism,

Absolutely.

The internet has become basically a handful of sites on which people share these sites' publications It's become some kind of meta feedback loop.

cyborganism,

And I'm running out of patience with these companies who think they own the internet and act like they can do whatever they want.

I've already stopped using Facebook and Twitter, and frankly I don't care about leaving Reddit. It had become such a toxic place anyway.

I feel that because KBin/Lemmy is new, people tend to be more positive and optimistic and helpful.

This blame game over Canadian wildfire smoke has got to stop

This new normal of near-constant wildfire smoke annoys me as much as the next person. But it serves as a reminder that we share one fragile atmosphere that we're collectively screwing up. Fruitless to waste all this energy pointing fingers like children when we should be joining hands to fix this. It's like nature's warning...

cyborganism,

Wait. Are people blaming anybody for this?

It's everyone's fault. Especially big corps, energy companies and some governments with less than good environmental policies that have been increasing greenhouse gas emissions for decades now. And the governments that have enabled them to do so.

What was the subreddit that represented to you the best example of downspiral of quality? To me it was /r/dataisbeautiful

At first it was all about presenting data in an original looking way. In the end it was about pushing political ideas in your throat using a plain bar graph. It was not about sharing something interesting you found but about taking advantage of a captive audience.

cyborganism,

/r/menslib

It became a god damn misogynist shit show.

cyborganism,

Last Week in the Fediverse – episode 24. Excellent coverage as always. (fediversereport.com)

An eventful week in the fediverse, filled with discourse and drama about Meta's new microblogging platform. A summary of events and a separation of the different topics that were talked about. Beyond that, WeDistribute, a blog with a long history and legacy talking about decentralized social networks is back!

Snapshot from Brussels
cyborganism,

A very interesting article. There are some valid arguments to let Meta join the fediverse, even if I disagree with them doing so.

Getting people to leave Facebook for another platform when all their family and friends are on there is an extremely difficult task. God knows I've tried. With Twitter it was easier since Elon Musk has been continuously fucking up the service and being an openly ignorant and intolerant asshat and playing god with everyone's accounts. People quickly sought alternatives and soon found Mastodon.

Recently the same thing happened with Reddit, but it was much softer. Redditors aren't so keen on letting go of their decade-old high-karma accounts and all the saved discussions and comments and the overall increasing popularity of the service in the media. You kind of feel like you're part of something big, whereas with Lemmy or Kbin it still feels like a very young underground community without any attention.

And I hate to say it, but Diaspora, which is the alternative to Facebook, really hasn't taken off at all, sadly. It needs to be brought back to the forefront along with Mastodon, Lemmy and KBin.

cyborganism,

We're literally witnessing the apocalypse, and yet I'm expected to go to work on Monday.

cyborganism,

cyborganism,

Of course not. The money all went to oil company subsidies.

And whatever happened to that pledge to plant trees to reduce our carbon footprint???

cyborganism,

@RagingNerdoholic

Wow.... ok.

cyborganism,

We have a big baby boomer crowd who are getting increasingly old, have developed all kinds of health problems

Pair that with a healthcare system thats increasingly hard to access and you go a bunch of people who'd rather die than keep on living with pain when they can't get proper treatment due to lack of medical staff or ridiculously long waiting times.

cyborganism,

LOL what a joke.

It's the same kind of farce as when Justin walked alongside Greta Thunberg back in 2019. This was a walk to tell the government that we need to change our policies to take better care of our environment and reduce greenhouse gases. A walk to send HIM a message.
