If you like international and eclectic news, come and join me at @worldwithoutus (Link for Lemmy = worldwithoutus).

I've also started helping out at @worldnews, (Link for Lemmy = worldnews), @movies, (Lemmy = movies), and am a ghost at @13thfloor (Lemmy = 13th Floor).

Who owns the Fediverse? I mean who owns and runs the hardware that runs this system?

I've been talking to many people about the controversy with Reddit, why I left it and why I went onto Lemmy, Kbin and Mastadon instead. Some of my friends have commented that the control is still a problem as other platforms and it is all dependent on who owns the software, who owns the hardware, who are the admins, who are the...

Yep. I know it's not literal coffee but I love thinking of Ernest as this incredibly wired guy who is mainlining coffee from us as he works on kbin.

I see Smorks has answered your question but just to follow on from what @Hotzilla said, the great thing about the software being open source is that it's totally possible for any group, for example an Indigenous arts collective, to run their own self-funded instance for their members, which can still inteact with others in the fediverse.

To be clear, I am not saying to you, "you must do this yourself".

I am only saying, the source code of these platforms are resources that anyone can use.

There will be many different ways of owning/paying/maintaining. There will be many kaupapa (purpose and process), some you will agree with and some you won't.

But, spread the word that the resources are here for us all. You and I might not have the energy but we probably know groups who would.

You are in Canada on lemmy.ca and helping to support smorks, I am in Aotearoa reading your words through kbin.social and I donate to kbin's dev, Ernest. It's wonderful that we can have this conversation across platforms like this. I think great things will happen.

He's going full musk. Never go full musk.

I agree with this. It would just feel weird.

Reminds me of the "people of Imgur" phenomenon where Imgur would react and reply to Reddit content, seemingly with no understanding that the OP was posting it for other purposes and could not see their comments.

It doesn't make sense to me to crosspost from AITA. If there's no way to actually tell the actual person what you think, you might as well be reading bot content on youtube.

Similar experience, I saw people say beehaw lemmy and kbin, went to kbin because I found its name more aesthetically pleasing, made an account and dived in.

The more I hear about these games, the less fun they sound. I think it was just the person who literally puts it through the hoop that gets the riches, though, not the captain?

I have a hazy memory of some Mayan leader called Bird Jaguar The Great actually putting their political opponents inside a ball and kicking it down the steps, but that sounds like a fever dream.

That doesn't sound as bad, I was imagining a live captive like in a hamster ball.

If Reddit phased out 3rd party apps gradually and tactfully, do you think this would have gone the way it has? The Reddit app is terrible, but is it any worse than navigating and learning the fediverse so far? Be honest.

I've been thinking a lot about why I decided to come here and I know it started off as a "they can't make me use their shitty app!" while simultaneously using test apps that crash and navigating less content than Reddit. What is the primary motivation for all of this anymore? Is anger enough of a motivation to keep people away...

Honestly? If Reddit had phased out third part apps gradually and tactfully I would have phased out my redditing gradually and tactfully.

I only browsed reddit on old or rif because otherwise it's just too slow, not info-dense, and has a facebook feel.

Being part of a mass migration instead of having to gradually move accross has been a steeper learning curve, sure, but it was always going to happen to me once reddit ditched old.reddit, and this way at least I have fellow noobs.

ikr, their meme game is on point.

livus,

It's funny, I never saw 196 on reddit but it really makes an impact in this part of the fediverse!

It is somewhere, I can't remember but I definitely saw it on a fediverse list.

From the article:

As long as restrictions against women’s rights remain in place in Afghanistan, it will be “nearly impossible” for the international community to recognize the Taliban government, the U.N.’s envoy to the country said Wednesday.

“In my regular discussions with the de facto authorities, I am blunt about the obstacles they have created for themselves by the decrees and restrictions they have enacted, in particular against women and girls,” Roza Otunbayeva, head of the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, told the Security Council.

“The Taliban ask to be recognized by the United Nations and its members, but at the same time they act against the key values expressed in the United Nations Charter,” she said.“We have conveyed to them that as long as these decrees are in place it is nearly impossible that their government will be recognized by members of the international community,” Otunbayeva added.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government is not officially recognized by any foreign country or international organization. Under their austere interpretation of Islam, Taliban authorities have imposed a slew of restrictions on Afghan women since seizing power in 2021, including banning them from higher education and many government jobs.

From the article:

As the devastating conflict in Sudan continues, Jersey Overseas Aid, the island’s official publicly-funded relief and development agency, has committed £150,000 to two humanitarian partners that are providing life-saving assistance to those impacted by the protracted and violent war.

The conflict, that is mainly taking place in the capital Khartoum as well as the Western Darfur region between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has left an estimated 24.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance – a 57% increase from the number in need at the beginning of 2023. Over 1.4 million people have fled their homes, including over 450,000 who have crossed into neighbouring countries Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, CAR, and Ethiopia.

Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) has allocated £75,000 to the United Nations’ Refugee Agency, UNHCR, and a further £75,000 to CARE International.

Bangladesh has formally applied to become a member of BRICS, an alliance of five countries.

The leaders of the alliance will attend the 15th BRICS summit to be held in South Africa from 22 to 24 August. It is said that there will be a discussion about taking new members.

The BRICS is a regional economic alliance of five countries. Originally BRICS was named after the initials of five member countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The BRICS was officially founded in 2009.

There were discussions about the inclusion of Bangladesh for the last couple of days.

Thanks to you! You are awesome. But I hope you are getting enough rest!

I feel this way too.

Ironically, connecting with others on these non reddit sites is making me ferl more in touch with myself.

Like, thinking before typing, and having better conversations, but also in terms of thinking more actively about what content I want to engage with.
