Report shows Ethiopian civil war more lethal than Ukraine war (www.thereporterethiopia.com)

The two-year war in northern Ethiopia resulted in approximately 100,200 deaths before an African Union-brokered ceasefire was reached in November 2021, a new report reveals. In comparison, the Ukraine-Russia war that began in February led to 81,500 deaths, the same source added.

22 nations have formally applied for membership in BRICS with another 20 or so expressing interest, so I think it probably does represent a shift. I was interested to see there's some talk of Sri Lanka adopting the Indian rupee to help with its economic crisis.

On the forgotten crimes front, I feel like we're still a bit in the "doomed to repeat history" phase, especially when it comes to genocides. But who knows how it will all shake out.

An International Team Begins to Safely Transfer Oil from Decrepit Tanker in Yemen (www.energyportal.eu)

An international team is about to commence the process of siphoning oil from a deteriorating tanker located off the coast of war-torn Yemen, according to a United Nations official. The operation aims to prevent a massive oil spill in the Red Sea, and this step marks a critical milestone in the project that has been years in the...

From the article:

In April, tribal violence in Porgera led to the closure of schools and businesses, raising concerns about the safety of people and the goldmine.

As part of efforts to address the issues on the ground and restart the goldmine a security forum has been held in Paiam town in Porgera last week.

The Prime Minister's Office said leaders and security forces appealed to the local warring tribes to end the fighting because of its effects on the mine, businesses and the community.

The government said it is working day and night to ensure the goldmine - closed for four years - is reopened in September so benefits could flow to the people.

Prime Minister James Marape made a direct appeal to the people of Porgera and the surrounding communities to stop fighting and do away with the guns and tap into spin off benefits from the mine.

"Let your children live in peace and get the benefits from the mine and stop the killings," he said.

He also appealed to all the affected communities, landowners, mine licence areas to bring their issues and grievances and what benefits they would like to get at the new Porgera Mine Development Forum in Wabag next month.

"We want to hear from you. We want to know what you want and how we can share the benefits from our 51 percent stake in the New Porgera Mine," Marapa said.

From the article:

Migrant worker rights groups have called on the government to lay out a timeline to ban the practice of ferrying workers on lorries following two accidents last week.

"While we appreciate efforts from the government to improve the safety of workers during transportation, these recent tragic incidents have highlighted the continued grave risks posed by transporting migrant workers on lorries," according to a statement signed by 47 organisations and members of the public, which was posted on Monday (Jul 24)....

The issue of migrant workers travelling to and from work sites on the back of lorries is a perennial problem that has been raised in parliament as early as 2010.

Since January this year, rain covers have been mandatory on newly registered lorries, and employers are required to provide a 30-minute break to workers who have worked at least six hours before they take the wheel.

Monday's collective statement said the current measures are "inadequate"."While these are strong steps forward and do address real concerns on the ground, they do not address the root cause of these accidents – the unsafe transportation of workers on the lorry," the statement said.

He noted that even though the Secretariat`s Seat is in Centurion in the Republic of South Africa and has already been granted the immunities and privileges under the Diplomatic Immunities and Privileges Act No. 37 of 2001 of South Africa, the Government of Lesotho is pleased to extend similar immunities and privileges to host the PMO under the Secretariat of the ORASECOM.

He expressed hope that this PMO is not only for the establishment of the Framework for the Study on the provision of water to Botswana from Lesotho highlands but also constitutes a step in the development of sustainable renewable water projects for the benefit of Basotho and those on the Senqu River Basin....

The agreement between Lesotho and South Africa for managing the Orange-Senqu River is crucial for maintaining a sustainable water supply and ensuring equitable sharing of water resources between the two countries.

Benefits of smoking cigarettes?

My girlfriend has threatened to break up with me several times now unless I cut down to a pack a week. I’m not addicted but it does help me get through my day. I keep trying to tell her that but she doesn’t believe me and keeps saying that it’s actually bad. I want to prove to my girlfriend that smoking cigarettes is...

Sorry, that must be hard. You're in such a wealthy country but not everyone in it gets to benefit from that, when it comes to healthcare.

That said, I don't really agree with the high taxes on tobacco here. It's an addictive substance, and the massive costs help fuel poverty. I think it should be prescription only instead.

While headlines worldwide spotlight the distress in Eastern Europe from the Russia-Ukraine clash, a new report reveals the conflict in North Ethiopia has extracted a much steeper cost in human life, largely escaping international media coverage.

The Ethiopian and Ukraine-Russia conflicts accounted for 89 percent of battle-related deaths worldwide in 2022, according to a new report from the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

The institute’s annual conflict trends report found that last year was the deadliest in four decades, with 204,000 battle-related fatalities.

The two-year war in northern Ethiopia resulted in approximately 100,200 deaths before an African Union-brokered ceasefire was reached in November 2022. In comparison, the Ukraine-Russia war that began in February led to 81,500 deaths.

“While the war in Ukraine captured most attention, the parallel war between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front was more lethal,” the report states.

The Ethiopian conflict, already the third deadliest in 2021, drew in forces beyond the two warring parties.

The report counted an additional 22,300 deaths from other conflicts in 2022, accounting for 11 percent of the total.

About half of all casualties due to military conflict worldwide in 2022 happened in Ethiopia.

Yeah it's weird that you don't get to be single even though you are.

I haven't been single for over 20 years but I'm also not married or divorced or widowed.

livus,

That would explain it! I will stay tuned.

livus,

Depends on the purpose of the demographics.

I think collecting the stats on it first is probably a big part of why we slowly changed our laws to give them all the same rights - when we saw how many people were being affected.

livus,
livus avatar

It's a human rights issue because of things like property law, adoption, next of kin rights. Sometimes people (often women) can be left financially vulnerable, especially if children are involved, if their relationship is not recognised under the law.

Couples don't get tax advantages over single people where I live either, so that part's a non issue.

Totally, good assessment design matches the rubric with an appropriate length, so it's hard for them to fulfill it well if they don't take the space.

As for the maxed out ones, iirc I tended to just rule a line at the 110% mark and not read/mark anything past it.

I know that's a bit uncaring, but it's an easy way to avoid unfairly rewarding overlength, and the penalty sort of applied itself.

South Africa's top diplomat in charge of relations with the bloc, Anil Sooklal, told reporters in Johannesburg that 22 countries have officially asked to join the BRICS group while there was "an equal number of countries have informally expressed interest in becoming BRICS members … [including] all the major global south countries."

He explained that the increased interest in the bloc is "not something new", but indicates "confidence" in the work carried out by BRICS since its inception in 2009.

He added that BRICS is not just "a political force" that "attempts to change the fault lines in global politics, but also aims to "change what is happening in the economic space at the global level."

"The current global structure is still unequal and continues to marginalise developing countries (…) and is still dominated by a few. We do not want a similar world. We want a world where our voices are heard," he told AFP.

Crisis-hit Sri Lanka may allow Indian rupee to be used in local transactions (abcnews.go.com)

Sri Lanka is considering the possibility of allowing the use of the Indian rupee to be used in local transactions, as the island nation struggles to build its depleted foreign reserves and to emerge from last year’s unprecedented economic crisis

From the article:

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said Saturday the move to allow the use of its giant neighbor's currency would enable “tourists and other people from India to directly use Indian rupees here” without going through the hassle of multiple currency conversions.

Sri Lanka imports plenty of items from India — its largest trading partner — including food, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, automobiles, fertilizers and chemicals. Trade between the two nations stood at $5.45 billion in 2021, according to official figures.

Sabry said accepting the Indian rupee would work as an advantage for Sri Lanka as the trade imbalance between the two countries is in favor of India.

Mali's Constitutional Court on Friday validated the final results of the referendum on the country's draft constitution: 96.91 percent in favour and 3.09 percent against.

It said the turnout of the 18 June poll was 38 percent.

Associations and political parties had requested the cancellation of the referendum poll, arguing that it had been marred by incidents and irregularities. These appeals were rejected by the court.

It was the first ballot since the military took power by force in August 2020 under colonel Assimi Goïta, who has assumed the presidency.

According to RFI's regional correspondent Serge Daniel, the new constitution effectively strengthens the powers of the president, and gives pride of place to the armed forces...

Critics describe the project it as tailor-made for keeping the colonels in power beyond the presidential election scheduled for February 2024, despite their initial commitment to handing over the place to civilians after the elections.

The country continues to battle a jihadist insurgency that since 2012 has gradually spread to Burkina Faso and Niger, killing and displacing thousands of people.

Mali's diplomatic relations outside Africa have steadily deteriorated since the coup.

The UN Security Council last month voted to end a decade-old peacekeeping mission in Mali, after the ruling junta demanded the withdrawal of foreign forces and aligned itself closer to Russia.

The Statistics Norway report indicates that the majority of Norwegians have good housing conditions. It also shows that many groups have improved their situation over time,” housing researcher Jardar Sørvoll tells sciencenorway.no.

He adds that on the other hand, the report also illustrates that the housing sector is one of the areas where economic inequality in Norway manifests itself. “It is worrisome that the differences in living space and ownership rate between different groups are as significant as indicated in the report,” the researcher at OsloMet says.

Sørvoll points out that the government has announced a new housing policy in 2024. He hopes that the increasing inequalities in the housing sector will be addressed.
Increasingly high housing prices

Among people with limited education and low income, there are significantly fewer in Norway who own their own home, as shown by the Statistics Norway report.

The gap between those who are well off in the housing market and those struggling to find a satisfactory home has increased in recent years.

This has happened in line with the continuous rise in housing prices.

Among those who are struggling in the housing market, there are also more people living in cramped conditions and experiencing issues like dampness and noise. This negatively affects their well-being and quality of life.

A section of the 32 MW Yungichhu Hydro Power Project in a remote area in the east of the country was washed away, but the main part was not hit, the Bhutanese newspaper said in a Twitter post without elaborating.

State broadcaster BBS said seven bodies have been recovered so far and another 16 were missing.

Five of the seven killed have been identified, authorities said without giving details.

"It is a major disaster," Bhutanese quoted an unnamed official from Druk Green Power, which is in charge of the plant's construction, as saying. The missing included project staff, the official added.
