My god yes, also people who make horrible bots that interrupt the conversation just to push their owners' spelling or punctuation preferences.

It's prescriptivist, elitist, and even ableist. Also, social media by nature is colloquial, not formal - it feels like being told off for not wearing a business suit at home on the weekend.

Yeah, this. I did it once out of habit and then I realized how empty it is.

Yeah, that sub was much better when it was small and had a rule against obvious validation-seeking by people who already knew they were in the right.

Thanks! It was probably inspired by your profile pic, on some level.

Call out post for a particular karma farmer on kbin.social

Well, it's magical! It reminds me slightly of the forest spirit in Princess Mononoke but way more striking. Strange how these things come into being.

I really need to get a proper avatar. I just grabbed the first thing I saw that was the right size from my image folder.

Edit: omg those images are all fantastic. You can have a whole FaceDeer empire.

Economic inequality cannot be explained by individual bad choices, study finds (phys.org)

A global study led by a researcher at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that economic inequality on a social level cannot be explained by bad choices among the poor nor by good decisions among the rich. Poor decisions were the same across all income groups,...

The thread title is 'Economic inequality cannot be explained by bad choices, study finds.'

I was talking about economic inequality as per the thread title. If you don't want to talk about it that's fine, don't - but there's no need to tell me not to talk in here. We're all friends.

Christ no.

I was trying to explain the main point in Thomas Picketty's Capital in the 21st Century in a way they might understand, but I soon saw that I had vastly underestimated how hard that is to do.

That's my bad, next time I'll either take the time to spell it out a lot more clearly, or just walk on by.

Not sure how you came to the conclusion I'm defending their argument, when I can see you just downvoted me for telling them I don't understand them?

I'm wondering if there is any research which directly addresses the correlation level between cognitive biases and poor decisionmaking.

It feels like commonsense that there should be a causal relationship in there, logically speaking, but "common sense" isn't science.

I'm having a lot of difficulty understanding your perspective, so I'm just going to leave you alone. Have a nice day.

I was trying to buy a car and tried facebook, but it kept showing me people selling cars for $1234 and from imaginary made up locations. I think they were chop shops.

Malaysia scraps mandatory death penalty for crimes such as drug trafficking, terrorism (www.laprensalatina.com)

Malaysia’s repeal of the mandatory death penalty for crimes such as drug trafficking and terrorism came into effect on Tuesday, while activists called for a review of capital punishment sentences already awarded for these crimes. The measure, bringing a reform in the country’s penal code, was approved by the parliament…

Hondurans Fight Private Cities Run by U.S. Companies as Gov’t Sued for Outlawing “Neocolonial Project” (www.democracynow.org)

In Honduras, communities are fighting back against privatization and foreign exploitation after Honduran President Xiomara Castro and Congress repealed a law that established so-called Economic Development and Employment Zones, where private companies have “functional and administrative autonomy” from the national...

Economic Development and Employment Zones, where private companies have “functional and administrative autonomy” from the national government.

That's literally corporate feudalism. It's terrifying that Honduras has been challenged for repealing this law.

@xuxebiko hey, could you please not editorialise titles like this?

Since this is a news magazine, we need to use the actual news headlines if possible.

Otherwise it will just turn into a lot of opinions as headings instead of the factual titles, and that's too vague to be useful as news.

From the article:

The violations include conflict-related sexual violence against internally displaced and refugee women and girls forced to flee for their lives.

Agency chiefs from humanitarian coordination office OCHA, the human rights office (OHCHR), the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN sexual and reproductive health agency (UNFPA), UN Women and the World Health Organization (WHO), called for an immediate end to the violence, including sexual violence as a tactic of war to terrorize people.

They demanded prompt, thorough, impartial and independent investigations into all alleged gross violations and abuses of human rights and international humanitarian law; and for perpetrators to be held accountable.

They also stressed that all parties must respect their obligations under international law to protect civilians, including women and girls, including allowing safe passage for survivors to access healthcare. Health workers also need to be provided access to reach health facilities to carry out their lifesaving work.

The UN chiefs also stressed the need to swiftly scale up gender-based violence prevention and response services in Sudan as well as in neighbouring countries, where those fleeing violence have sought safety as refugees, to meet the soaring needs...

"The health needs of the population are high, access to healthcare remains very difficult, and the conditions created by the conflict in Sudan increase the risk for epidemics to spread and kill,” said the WHO Director General.

There has also been a dramatic increase in the number of people at highest risk of hunger, which has jumped from 11.7 million to 19.1 million.

WHO has also verified 50 attacks against healthcare, including 32 incidents affecting facilities, and 10 deaths and 21 injuries among health workers and patients.
